Have to name GSJ coach or interim coach ASAP

Last week I said to my brother we should just name him coach and spend the extra money to get the best assistants possible. At this point it would look horrible to hire him. The optics would be no one else wanted to come so we settled on the last possible guy.
True, but that's the reality it seems. I think it's understandable that they would be searching for an accomplished HC, yet ultimately decide to promote within to have some continuity. Granted, this situation is a mess and the damage is probably done, but I think at least SJU fans would definitely support GSJ if he's on the sidelines.
That would have been fine if they didn’t offer multiple coaches before potentially settling for him

First, why would GSJ want to step into this quagmire and sully his reputation? He has nothing to gain and lots to lose.

Second, interim coach is pointless. What recruits are going to come and play for a coach who could be toast in a year or two?

Third, GSJ's future is in the NBA. He came here with Chris to get experience as an AC. There is no way his long term future is tied to the college game.

As bad as the search fiasco is now, hiring GSJ as head coach would be a sure sign that the University is giving up.

1. Because he wants the job.
2 Don't be so sure
3. See 1

I know it would be viewed as a last gasp stop gap, but it could actually pay dividends

The roster will be barren next season. Who in their right mind wants to come here now except a higher priced guy who would fail, and fatten his wallet along the way.

Just wondering how you know he wants the job?

GSJ has been advocating for the job since last week! AND he's still on campus!

I usually qualify things that are my opinion vs. fact. This is I know for sure, and am convinced if offered, would be a 24/7/365 endeavor for him.

Things have deteriorated so badly that this no longer seems crazy. Since the adults completely screwed this up, let the kids have their choice for coach.

If Boynton & Anderson are both beyond our reach right now, this might be the best option available, especially if it allows us to keep Figgy and some of the other guys.

How bad of a situation would you have to be in, to accept any position that has to do with athletics for this school. The way Repole ripped all of them new ones should scare away anyone with half a brain

You give him a five year deal that is only guaranteed for three years and let him get to work. His deal would be cheap and there is no buyout. Next year is a guaranteed disaster no matter who is the coach anyway. After two years you evaluate how the team has done on the court and also whether a GSJ led team is able to recruit anyone of any substance. If the answers are all bad (and I like GSJ but would expect the answer to be yes) he is kindly thanked for his service after year two. At that point you have the following upside:

- Mullin contract done
- Slice contract done
- Only a tiny remaining commitment to GSJ
- Maybe some changes to the hiring process two years down the road
- You are two years removed from what is going on right now

The only downside is maybe year two is as bad as year one. 2019 is now destined to be brutal no matter what the school does at a higher annual cost. And you never know - he could get the job done.

The entire idea is like buying a lottery ticket and trying to get rich but poor people line up at bodegas all over the city trying to do that every day. Isn't that SJU right now?

I think GSJ would be a fine asst. By all acts a tireless worker and a personality that blends well with the players, a coach in waiting.
I do think he has four tears experience. He has had the same experience for four years. As an asst he would gain a different perspective from whoever becomes coach.

St Johns fans should not forget about what staff members Greg St Jean and Chris Huey did over last 10 days in a difficult situation. Kept remaining core in place with no knowledge about their own status. #sjubb

Huey was at Anderson press conference today btw. Believe Greg was back home.

Greg doesn't seem like he's in the plans, but that's OK. How many guys his age actually do most of the coaching for a high major basketball team? He'll land on his feet -- he can be at work for either GSW or Sac as soon as some calls are made.

If he wants to continue with the college-ish game, I'd actually love to see him take Borman's hopefully old job. I realize this is unrealistic, but Greg's a really smart guy, and it would be great to see a high character guy as an AAU powerbroker.

Not sure. Presumed he was on campus holding down the fort. His main concern , way beyond himself were the kids who were reasonably concerned about their future.

I fully believe GSJ should be retained if possible. Don't understand the talk saying otherwise. Not sure what his role should be exactly, but he's earned his stripes.

Greg will land on his feet very quickly. Many connections out west.

Doubt there is room. MA was a long time assistant of Nolan Richardson and he has 2 long time assistants he will probably bring with him. If third AC is a local would think it would be a recruiter.

Am I doing the 'math' right? It looks like 1 more AC, a recruiter, and 'probably' one of Hsu or Borman--but not both?

Greg has a long promising career ahead and has burnt no bridges here at St. John's.

Best of luck to a kid who worked hard and made the most of his opportunity.
