Have to name GSJ coach or interim coach ASAP

No one is going to want to sign here now that all of our dirty laundry has aired unless Oliva and gempesaw immediately turnover decision making to cragg and open the checkbook which seems highly unlikely.

Time to hire GSJ just to see if we can stop hemhorraging players and get on recruiting trail and look for a new coach starting early next spring hopefully with new leadership at the top or at least hopefully with cragg being complete decision maker for one reason or another.

Yep. I just posted that on another thread. But I also think Cragg resigns.

Can he recruit? Haven’t seen any of his players signing with St Johns while he has been here.

I actually agree with this.

Waste of time. We are done, nobody with BE skills will want to sign here anyway. Unless they surprise us with a Pitino or Donovan type of hire...this program is now dead for good. We no longer belong in the Big East.

I remember blaming Fr. Harrington for the same BS and was excited when he left. Now, it is even worse?!

Like The Who said, "Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss."

We are...done.

The fact this might be a reasonable decision speaks volumes. An intern coach for a d1 b-ball team for a full year is close to a death sentence. In our case we are already on life support.

Cragg is resign only way stays if hire has Duke ties. He is gone Olivia and Gempesaw going off list made, next coach is a Social Justice hire since it won’t be criticized they get to skate.

Yeah I think he has to be named head coach rather than a full year “interim coach” with a 4-5 year deal but a really low buyout and let him know it may only be a one year deal in fairness to him (but assure him he will stay on staff as assistant or get an even larger buyout if he doesn’t). Give him some money to get some decent young assistants and let kid have a shot. Just so we actually have a program!

Wouldn't that put eventual replacement a year behind?
Nothing going to make this situation better at this point. This is awful

I’m counting on anyone willing to come here now bring a terrible coach probably without a job or on their way out (or bc we are guaranteeing way too much money to someone who will likely be fired in 1-3 years). By keeping st Jean he gets a shot at head coach which can only help for his future and we get a year for St. John’s to hopefully figure out what the hell they are doing and maybe change how things are run. We aren’t hiring anyone worth their salt otherwise.

Hard to say how GSJ would do as HC, but he was definitely coaching the team while Mullin was HC. The guy is very passionate and was working with a very flawed roster. Players seem to like him and he obviously is very aware of the mess at SJU. Give him some capable AC's and give him a shot.

Alternatively, hire Pitino. I don't think anything in between can work at all. Crazy situation.

Honestly Pitino (which won't happen) is only cure at this point. Not sure admin wants patient to survive though.

By the time they get around to offering the job to Pitino, he will turn it down. In case they have not noticed, coaches are not exactly lining up for the job.

I honestly believe that at this point, the GSJ interim appointment is the best courser of action. Let the dust settle. Take the pain next year. Let Cragg go or the others leave and let the new AD (or a freed up Cragg) make a permanent hire next year, when hopefully this bad taste is partially diluted in the BB community's and potential coaches mouths.

Not sure GSJ should or would do it (as a young guy trying to look good next year won't help him in that regard), but I would do that now. Stop the bleeding. Get off the back pages.

Fine at this point. What a debacle. Have GSJ on for a year while Gempesaw and Oliva step down. Cragg obviously gone. Clean house and start next year. We thought Pittsburgh was bad?

At this point, unless a miracle happens and we hire Billy D or Ricky P, there's going to stigma attached to this coach based on the dysfunction, process, and public rejections. As the perceived 20th choice, he's going to be a huge recruiting disadvantage and will have the appearance of a lame duck from the get go.

Last week I said to my brother we should just name him coach and spend the extra money to get the best assistants possible. At this point it would look horrible to hire him. The optics would be no one else wanted to come so we settled on the last possible guy.

Good point. We wouldn’t be putting him in a position for success but if he could retain our current players he gets him the shot to run a high D1 program which would be invaluable to a young aspiring coach.

True, but that's the reality it seems. I think it's understandable that they would be searching for an accomplished HC, yet ultimately decide to promote within to have some continuity. Granted, this situation is a mess and the damage is probably done, but I think at least SJU fans would definitely support GSJ if he's on the sidelines.
