Has It Really Come Down To This??

I was at the Pitt game and needless to say when I got home I was in no mood to read the posts on this site from the game. Why? Well I'm sure anyone who has been reading the Pitt game thread knows why. I must say, in all the years I've been a member of this board, I have never seen two things that have happen already this year:

- threads calling out individual members
- members actually resorting to blocking fellow members because they can't seem to post on here without insulting each other

Folks, last I checked, we are all rooting for the same basketball team. Yes, there are one or 2 people who post the same negative stuff day after day, but why not just ignore those 2 guys instead of having this site turn into what it's become? I have to laugh at the people on here who are now saying we are making the NIT as if it's some type of prophecy. We were picked to finish 10th...remember? We were a team that won 13 games a year ago & lost our best player. Lets get a reality check. We were in the conversation for an NCAA bid this year b/c we had been exceeding expectations. Now that appears to be over, so we just move on & try to win our next 3 games. No one on here is happy when we lose, but some of you guys act as if this team should be 26 - 0 and when we lose it has to be because the players and coaches suck. Get a grip.

Lets get back to basketball. We don't need some genius on this site to "predict that we will lose our next 3 games". We can go on to the other teams boards and read about that. If you want to be negative it's your call, but also be realistic. If you want to give up on the season, start a 2014 thread, but insulting and calling out fellow members...really?

There is no one more misunderstood on this forum than me. My huge support and emotions for this team are taken as "being whiny", "being annoying", "being negative", etc. every day. Thank you for pointing out how ridiculous it is to create manifestos singling out one specific poster. That is not a popular view on this board. Many people even decided to jump in and get their shots in rather than calling it stupid and immature like you imply. The problem with this forum is that there is a bunch of tight-knit people who only allow one POV to be taken seriously in regards to this team. That prevents people who are passively reading from not ever wanting to post, because they see what I went through. If I post things trying to spark legitimate conversation, it gets rejected as "stupid", "pointless", and "ridiculous". The only reason I stay here is for the information regarding this team and being able to see updates way before ESPN can announce them.

Amen, NYC Redmen.

My advice to posters: during the game do not post the first thought that enters your head, pause, collect yourself, breathe. Post every ten or fifteen mins, not rapid fire drivel. I know I have been as guilty as anyone but this jumping-off-the-ledge, Chicken-Little act is getting old...

And remember the old adage: do not get too high after wins or low after losses.

Peace, fellow Redmen.

TXRedman, I think part of the reason some of us post rapid fire (I'm guilty of this) is because most forums are that way. On ESPN comments are posted every second.

Since the rapid fire posting has come up, let me just say one thing. I think what gets under people's skin is when someone misses a free throw 5 minutes into the game & then someone is posting something like "we suck, we are going to lose, we won't recover from that missed free throw". I'm obviously exaggerating but I think my point is made. For the record I am not referring to anyone in particular, they know who they are ; )

But that's just how it is...I've never seen a forum without that stuff. It's part of being a fan...you live and die with the team and there are major ups and major downs. I wouldn't see that as something foreign...that's expected anywhere.

I think you are missing my point Joe. I am not disputing that people post quickly on these sites (whether it be here or others) but only a "select few" post with the same "the sky is falling" posts just minutes into the game. Now, if that is how people feel they need to be in order to get thru a game, fine. But it's not the way most people post. I wish for once no one would post a damn thing until after the game is over LOL.

I think part of it has to do with wanting to reverse jinx the team. Kind of like shutting the game off, then peeking at the score. I swear it works sometimes!

I know my friend, I've been there too. After so many years of none of my superstitions working, I've finally decided to throw them all out. For years I could not watch them play on the road b/c I was convinced they would lose if I watched LOL.

Joe, the two things are not mutually exclusive, you can be a great fan, which I've stated you are, and still be whiny, annoying and sometimes over the top negative, which you also are. That said I've learned my lesson and just don't get into back and forth's with you when you are on a rant. Like you said. It's the emotions coming out and often they bring out ugly emotions in others, like myself. Do I wish you didn't post here? Sure, but until the mods tell otherwise it's your right.

Folks just have to know when to totally ignore certain posts or certain posters. Like Joe said, spam and ignorance runs rampant on pretty much every comments section and message board, this one is far from the worst. If you're smart we'll all develop a set of filters, what and who to read, what and who to ignore, what to respond to and what to put into the what was he smoking when he posted this pile and just move on. What was posted to solely to elicit some visceral (over)reaction from another poster or posters and what was posted simply because the original poster, like Jon Snow, knows nothing. Remember, most of what's posted on here are opinions and opinions are like many of the posters on this board, everyone has one . . . and most of them end up being wrong.

The only problem with all this is that for many this is place where we go to relax and unwind (not you Joe) and get away from the pressures of work, home and family. When you come here and let another poster get you all upset or uptight I can understand why it makes you question the value of the board as a whole. I had a nice day yesterday and am glad I was too busy to visit this place and give it 24 hours to cool down a little. Now lets hope the team puts together a stronger effort against the Friars. Lose that one and the NIT might just slip away.

This is a great forum to post our feelings positively or negatively. We are all fans and want to see the team succeed. .when it doesnt we die with them. When they win celebrate. I get pissed when we stink it up because I care. And, right now we el stinko against good teams. Do I like it, nope... will we lose the rest of our games? Probably based on what we see... will I root and pray I am wrong.. you betcha... now go out and prove me wrong johhnies... win a few games here against good opponents. So chill out let folks say whats on their minds and help those in need of johnny depression.. its all good...

Joe I have to say that I am really not that enamored with your constant critiques regarding the team we both love, but I respect your right to voice them. frankly we would probably be better off if we had more fans like yourself. But consider this, 99.9999999 percent of the American population could not care less as to whether we win or not. This helps me get through the losses!

Can you just stop talking about you and talk about basketball instead?

And it continues...by the way when I didn't post for an entire week at one point I noticed that almost everyday I was brought up anyway. Beginning to think it really isn't just me, but rather people who enjoy a whipping boy for the sake of whipping. You guys put me up against a wall and force me to be defensive with all the aggression and demeaning, then when I respond you tell me to shut up. Stop treating some people as subhuman and you will notice me pipe down. Notice I really don't even insult anyone on here. I'm usually the recipient of it. Posting emotional things does not insult...it may annoy, but it doesn't insult. So stop trying to turn the tables to avoid responsibility because saying things like "stop talking about you" is part of the problem. Try being respectful to me (a radical concept) and see how I respond. I am civil when people treat me civil, but if you attack me you hand me the keys to be relentless.

Could you read my post on SJU Pitt game thread page 40. I gave you some suggestions on how to make this constant arguing stop because joe, and people who seem to always be fighting with him, these battles have been starting to pop up on every topic I read so solve it now, through PMs, maybe even over a beer because I am tired of reading crap about bullying, fighting, insults. This is board to discuss St Johns Basketball, again if you feel joe you are unfairly treated PM the people who are doing it to you. Stop making proclamations like everyone on the board are picking on you. It is only a select few you are constantly going at it with so solve your issue with those people and then get back to discussing the matter at hand which is our basketball team. The board is almost unreadable with posts everywhere regarding insults, fights, etc. Please just work it out someplace other an the board we use to discuss basketball and the board will be much better to read. Thank you and have a good one.

Jack your suggestions were excellent but some people just cannot help themselves notwithstanding the warnings and coaxing they may have received.
It is so very unfortunate but I am sure it will stop very soon for the betterment of all concerned.

Hey guys.
I, for one, don't have problem with anyone. And often find myself nodding along w/ Joe3 on most of his posts. I've been going to this board for the last 5-6 years, only starting to post during Lavin's hire a couple years back and during the c of c tournament this season... But I check this site daily. I think we are all passionate fans and can respect each other's overly pessimistic and optimistic views without alienating, attacking, or blocking someone. Like NYC and joe stated, it's part of being a diehard fan. You might not love every post you read, but realize it's something that the person felt compelled and cared enough to take the time in the first place...
I love my redmen since '84 and aside from my mets, they are my passion since i was 8 years old and started following sports. (I'm 36) I bleed for our boys and desperately want us to matter again. And I love coming here for all my scoops, posts, and relevant info on my johnnies and to gather the general (very!) pulse of the redmen community. And I appreciate all the work of paul, moose over the years and the posts of Mkras, and mjd, and many others. (And this year joe3)
Lets just keep it civil. Through good times and bad.

Another Mets fan who agrees with you. There are many times I strongly disagree with Joe3 and many times I think he is way over the top looking for attention. However, that is his right as well as he stays within the rules and he has many good points to make as well. I know many people are annoyed by him and he does post alot but I enjoy what he brings to the board since it is a different perspective.
