Harrison Has Concussion

What is wrong with you guys. A valued member of St John's basketball team sustains a concussion which, believe me, is no fun, and all you can do is make lame jokes and sarcastic comments. DLo, feel better. Here's hoping your head clears and you re able to get right back to doing the thing you love ... playing ball!

It's a mild concussion and this is basketball. It's probably just a headache. If this were football, I'd feel much differently.

If coach can't see that Jorden and Harrison should be getting the lions share of minutes as the guards, then he's not a good coach ,a blind man can see that.

Actually, a blind man would not be able to see that. That is sort of the definition of being blind........not being able to see.

I don't even know what to say about this post. A concussion is a concussion. Does it matter if he's playing rugby or washing the dishes.

I assume if he;s flying on a plane, a doctor HAD to clear him. If he was concussed, he'd stay in NY, I trust.

But he doesn't have 30-50+ certain head-on collisions to go through on that "mild" concussion.

You are wrong. From WebMD:

Are There Different Types of Concussions?

Concussions are graded as mild (grade 1), moderate (grade 2), or severe (grade 3), depending on such factors as loss of consciousness, amnesia, and loss of equilibrium.

In a grade 1 concussion, symptoms last for less than 15 minutes. There is no loss of consciousness.

With a grade 2 concussion, there is no loss of consciousness but symptoms last longer than 15 minutes.

In a grade 3 concussion, the person loses consciousness, sometimes just for a few seconds.

If Harrison suffered a grade three concussion, he'd be out of tonight's game as a precaution, possibly with grade 2 also. I am guessing it is a grade 1 concussion, and because he hit his head so hard, they are still taking a wait and see approach to see if any symptoms occur or re-occur.

Harrison is tough as nails. If he is experiencing no symptoms in the 24 hours before the game, expect him in the lineup.

Thanks I guess. Not sure where I'm 'wrong'. I never mentioned various levels of severity. A concussion is still a concussion. Grade 1, 2, 3 or 12 its a serious matter that shouldn't be taken lightly. Regardless of what sport it occurred in. That's the point I and a few others were trying to make.

All sports nowadays are taking head injuries seriously and if you are concussed you are NOT returning to action. Baseline testing is then administered for future action. I'm very surprised he re-entered game and then in next game pre game it was mentioned he had a concussion.

Especially because of boxing, hockey, and football head injuries, all concussions are taken seriously today, and to that extent, a level 1 concussion can be categorized by a simple bump of the head that is non-concussive, just to be on the side of caution. It's much safer to hold a guy out a game, and list his availability as a game time decision, than to blow it off and simply say he is fine.

Take it from a guy who has not only played athletics for most of his life, but who is 6-foot-7 and has hit his head numerous times in his life (has bled from them, been knocked on the ground from them, has seen stars from them) a concussion is a concussion is a concussion.

There is no telling how he feels. SJU should have a smart enough medical staff to determine whether or not he should play. Not a bunch of dudes arguing about it on a message board. Like I said, if they let him fly, he must have passed all the boardline tests regarding a head injury.

Not to be argumentative, but as someone with a clinical degree a traumatic brain injury which is what a concussion is, has varying degrees. Repeated exposure to concussions can actually have an additive, progressive effect over time, and what is classified as a grade 1 concussion is rather mild with a much lower likelihood of permanent damage, where repeated grade 2 and grade 3 concussions can cause permanent brain damage, the likes of what we see with boxers who slur their words (like Joe Frazier) or the Parkinson effects that Ali has.

You see, while the skull protects the brain, which is just a mass of soft tissue, getting your head slammed actually has your brain slamming into your skull - internal injuries in a car accident is often the result of organs hitting your skeleton (rib cage especially) with a lot of force. So while that impact can be rather mild and insignificant when you bump your head and are a little woozy, it increases with severity in a concussion based on the symptomatic grading as described. As a former athlete, you know they all hurt, but the lingering affect is based on severity.

Off topic, but it was pretty pitiful to hear that great warrior speak in later years, a broken down man too old for his years, who once could have accurately been called one of the toughest guys on earth.

I'm not trying to be argumentative either. You are misinterpreting the "a concussion is a concussion" wording. Someone earlier in the thread was minimizing what it was because of the sport played. Well to the original poster no shit he's not a running back, linebacker, goon in hockey or boxer. Everyone has varying effects from when their brain gets rattled. That's all me and a couple other posters were trying to say. Not sure how this turned into what level concussion he had. This is my last post on the subject as I don't have a medical degree and don't pretend to.

Concussion is a concussion doesn't matter if it is MMA, Football, Basketball or Baseball. Jason Bay missed like 3 months with a concussion and any Met fan will tell you what a concussion did to Ryan Church in 2008. All depends on if he still has the sumptoms.

As far as flying meaning he will play, clearly those of you saying that do not play fantasy football! All those guys came down to kickoff whether they flew or not.

For all of you guys bashing Harrison's play at the end of the game. I'm disappointed too - this was one of those road games a tournament t team needs to win. Granted, they are miles better than the typical DePaul team, but still.

But think of this... there are a lot of you who would take the entire month of from work if you were suffered a concussion, and for nearly the entire game Harrison was the best player on the court for us.

It's disappointing to have him come up empty in the clutch again, but considering he was a game decision to play, you guys who are trashing him are disgusting.
