Happy B’Day “Looie”

Happy birthday Louie. What a wonderful person. After our daughter was born I sent Lou a picture of her in a St. John's cheerleader outfit and he sent a beautiful letter in reply. When she graduated from High School, Rhea Warren, my daughter's principal had Lou send another beautiful letter. He is truly one of a kind.

Happy birthday coach! No one person has ever meant more to St. John's University and I suspect no one ever will.

Five hundred twenty four coaching wins yet that seems trivial compared to his nearly 80 years as THE Ambassador of the university, the Vincentian mission, and everything that stands for.

When appropriate these days, he makes himself physically present, such as putting his stamp of approval on Rick's hire. Still, way beyond formal roles, are the infinite number of meaningful interactions with fans, students, alums - always gracious, always warm, always leaving those he met an indelible mark, something to remember forever.

Somehow having a court, an arena, and a statue in his honor seems trivial compared to the man. Perhaps the best honor is just how much he is beloved and treasured.

Ninety-nine years! A life well lived, simple in its elegance and faithfulness yet royal in stature. At the same time, completely ours.

May God continue to bless you Coach, with good health and happiness. Thank you.

Happy Birthday Coach. A National Treasure. UCLA has John Wooden, DePaul has Ray Meyer, but we have Looie Carnesecca, Luigi our own from right here on the lower east side in NYC. In his day quite a baseball player.

Humble, gracious and incredibly funny.

There is a reason why every broadcaster in America wanted to interview him, the quotes, the funny stories, and the humility.

I know I told this story here before, but about 15+ years ago, I was at the BET and had to take an elevator and when I get on I ran into Coach. Just me and him and the operator. He is talking up the operator (of course) and then sees me in my red sweater and starts talking. Not about BB but about was I an alum, when did I graduate, about my wife, my daughters, how's my health, my career. Genuine questions to see how I was doing. He's the celebrity. I was so taken by his warmth. It's something I will never forget.

I complimented him on his banner up in the rafters, and complained about the Garden not having it up there for all events. He demurred and said it was no big deal he didn't mind.

Happy 99th and continued good health, Coach, we're all asking ABOUT YOU!!!!

NOW a serious question is it Looie or Louie?, I've seen it both ways.
