@Grand Canyon, Tues. Dec. 5, 11:30p, ESPNU 970AM

Tough road game against a decent team, minus one of our top players. We need to win this one and should win, but I don't expect it to be easy..

Guys- not sure everyone keeps up with social media here, but videos of GCU crowds go viral for a reason. This is a big time home game for them (8 miles from campus...? that's nothing for college students) - Big East team in their back yard- their fans are going to be pumped and its gonna be a real tough environment to play in.

We are down Marcus- no surprise we are dogs in this one. Was actually hoping we would be faves so i could parlay the GCU money line. Hope we get the dub- but dont be surprised.

Still wondering why we're playing this team on the road? Are we getting a return game back at Alumni Hall in the future?
Good question, they should playing in our house we are the big east team. Respect the job Dan Majerle has done but this is kind of a lose lose situation for us. They are good enough to beat us in what is essentially a home game for them. But not good enough to really move the needle for us come selection time if we win (which we should). Hopefully the committee considers this a road game and not a neutral site game.

We were invited to play in this game “Valley of The Sun Shootout”. Arizona is playing Texas A&M in the first game

We are playing in an NBA Arena and traveling. I am sure they did this trip for Justin Simon, kind of break it up play Grand Canyon. It is better to play a Neutral site. I am sure the NBA Connection as well plays in.

Not doubting you, but would a school really schedule games geographically based on a players home location ?

When I was at UConn in the early 00s, they used to do this at least once a year for their top players. Schedule a game near their home town.

Thanks for sharing this. I have a bad feeling about this game. Especially without Marcus. Don't feel like this is a game we should have scheduled.

Simon's home town is Temecula which is in the San Diego metro. Born in L.A. I don't think any of this has to do with Simon. The original AZ St game was to be played in Las Vegas if I recall correctly.

Dean Smith used to schedule games for select seniors near their hometowns.

I don't like the feel of this game honestly. An away game vs a very enthusiastic (even though small) fan base and a decent team.

Also since it's a neutral site game, we don't get credit for it being away even though most fans with be GCU.

If we win then great. It's just not the type of game I'd schedule.

Edit: appears many others feel the same lol. I'm going to be really annoyed staying up for this and going into work tomorrow if we lose.

These are the games you build a resume for March with. It also test your team and builds character/experience. I’d rather play games like this, than hearing in March we didn’t get into the tourney because we played a bunch cupcakes at Carnesecca. All big programs travel and play these Nuetral site games. We should win this game, but that’s why you play the game.

I suspect that this and the ASU game are part of a strategy to put SJU 'on radar' in West Coast markets to further leverage off the reps of Mullin and Richmond.

Admittedly a tough game, especially without Marcus. It will hurt us if we lose, but winning it on the road would be a great boost to team's confidence and it is a very winnable game. I have no issue with the scheduling, just unfortunate Marcus is out for this one. Team needs to play smart and minimize foul trouble. Go Johnnies!

This is a "showcase" game, we were invited to participate. Same with Arizona State game on Friday. This will only prepare us for the rigors of conference play. If we want to be relevant again, we cannot shy away from the exposure. Kudos to Mullin.

Had to, to build a beachhead to tap West Coast talent. That's my guess. Agree, very bad luck Marcus sustained a sprained knee.
But, turns out, a win here on this allegedly 'neutral' court with Lovett unavailable might very well impress the Committee.
Got to play smart and tough.
We can do it.
