Goodbye To A Special St. John's Fan

As some of you have probably heard, last night after battling as long as he could, Diego passed away at the age of 41. Given everything that we are dealing with as far as the COVID-19 crisis it’s unlikely that there will be any type of memorial service for him any time soon. However when this passes I am sure that we will put together some type of tribute for him. Please keep his daughter and family in your prayers and make sure you all continue to stay safe. Diego was a special part of the St. John's family. An alum, a fan, a supporter but more than that he was a great friend and a father to a beautiful girl.

That photo should be preserved on Redmen.com

My condolences to you, Monte and Diego’s other friends.

Condolences and prayers to Diego's family and friends. NYCR, you were clearly a great and loyal friend to Diego. You can take comfort from all the good times you shared with him.

Diego was part of my fraternity on campus I can’t believe he is gone . He is one of the reasons why I love St. John’s basketball so much . RIP you will be truly missed

My condolences to his family and friends. (And that's a beautiful photo...)

Thank you Otis. In happier times just a few months ago when we got together to watch SJU-Marq game. No bigger SJU fan, no better human being. I’m blessed for having known him. RIP Diego, #13

The world is a little bit of a darker place today as we have lost a great one. Diego had an infectious smile, innocent goofiness and never-ending positive energy. He had the ability to light up a room when he walked in. He will be missed.

Had the pleasure of meeting Diego at a St. Johns game. He was an extremely engaging young man. Will keep him and his family in Prayer.

When this situation is resolved, I will reach out to Mike Cragg to see if we can invite his family to a game. Hopefully the Family of a true St Johns fan can be acknowledged sometime during the game.

Spoke with Fr. Rock this morning.

Hopefully, we can have a Memorial Mass for him at St. John's when things return to normal

Since it may be a while before we can do something in person for him, I put something together to help us remember the good times.

And for those who he kind of looks familiar but you aren't sure he was always on the MSG Dance Cam during games a lot of times with his kid. Dance Cam Diego !!!

Our friends make an indelible imprint on us. It doesn't leave us when they depart, it becomes part of us to carry with us the rest of our lives. The really great friends encouraged us, guided us, laughed with us, cried with us. I never met Diego, but know plenty of you who were friends with him. He appears to have been among the best of what St. John's produces, an asset to the university, a treasure to his family and friends.

Condolences to his family and to those of you who knew him. Rest in peace, Diego. The world has certainly lost a great smile, but God knows that smile is likely lighting up the heavens on a dreary day today.
