Gift

It Gift were my son and he had the opportunity to get a Masters Degree from Harvard, I would encourage him to go there. Gift's pro potential is limited, maybe he plays overseas for a few years. However, a degree from Harvard can make a substantial difference in a young man's life.

On the point of this thread, I agree, if he has the opportunity to go to Harvard for a master's degree, he should do that. But, he could easily do that after he is done here after next year too. I'd love to have him back next year, as I think he gives us an element that we need more of.

I mentioned in the game thread on the Jungle that I heard a rumor that Gift is going to Harvard next year for grad school and will use his last year of eligibility there. If true, we have an open scholarship. Is it for a guard or do we look for a big body?

So then sitting him truly backfires! All we need now is for Sampson to enter the NBA draft, Harrison and Bourgault to sign with a team in Paris, Sanchez to sign with a team in Bilbao and we can get to see the walk ons play again next year. LOL!
Thank God Lavin coached himself out of the USC job!!

wow...give it a rest buddy...

I am not your buddy and if you do not like what I, or anyone else opinions here, take a break and go play some mindless golf! it was tongue and cheek for the most part but I would limit moronic responses like this to the "Lavin is a Genius" thread......which I did not start but everyone seems content to comment on! Take a a break for the rest of the season!

Maybe you should take up golf, it might relax you. It is certainly your right to be critical and my right to respond. I just can't see getting so incensed about the current state of our program. Has Lavin been perfect, certainly not but I like the overall direction, the quality of his recruits and the national presence he gives us. Lets hope for better times ahead and not have our daggers out every time something doesn't go our way.

Obviously, if the kid has an opportunity to get a masters from Harvard, its a no brainer he has to go.

Or Yale or Columbia or Princeton or even Cornell.

72, don't know why you're so anti-Lavin, but it's tedious.

You must have me confused with Fun or Ray Morgan or any of the other dozen here who regularly bash Lavin but I am not, nor ever been anti-Lavin! I comment about his coaching strategy and substitution moves which is the purpose of this forum.
What is tedious is that THREE (3) years after Lavin was hired, with a similar record to Norm Roberts in year three, that some long distance fans that watch our games from the comfort of their living rooms and have no clue write the following:
"This group was put together, miraculously, by Lavin and Co. in desperation and against all odds."

Against all odds?!?!? Are you freaking for real? You guys have no problem bashing these players after every loss. Since when does the coach at St. John's, Wake Forest or anywhere else get a pass after losses??
You, Westie, are the same guy that responding to my comments not to put total blame on Pointer, went on diatribe about how it was all his fault and that he was clearly the aggressor. Nice work being "pro-team"!

Tedious? You must read all my good stuff! I suggest you scroll over like I do your self-righteous posts.
Tedious....anti-Lavin? When I start threads like "Lavin, the Genuis", and there are 78 guys that take the bait...that is tedious!
Tedious? Tedious is when some sanctimonious mod bans a kid because his posts are longer than his boring posts.
Tedious? Tedious is when guys who have little regard for others opinion but their own call others tedious.
Tedious? Tedious is when YOU all of a sudden, after watching Xtian Jones play some minutes, because Lavin, in his recruiting desperation lost his primary recruits, Jarel Martin and Rico Gathers from Louisiana, make a bold statement that Lavin was wrong in his assessment of Jones! Yeah, he played well as a "SUB" but also made two passes to a Marquette player! They are called turnovers and assists.

What is tedious here are guys who think their crap does not stink and then stink up the board by telling others that only their crap stinks. Guys that are challenged in a thread spend the next few weeks taking pot shots at the poster that disagreed with them, etc.
Grow some skin "buddy"! Why pick on a basketball coach on redmen.com when we can kick a Vincentian priest from here to China?

I'm no Lavin basher. My point all along is that no one can make shooters out of bricklayers and instill instincts in players that have none. He may not be an elite coach, but he will win when he gets better all around talent. That's what I have said all along.

I am not going to get in a pissing contest with you. I rarely post, but look at just about everything on here. So, yes, your hard-on for Lavin is tedious. It's also tedious to use the word "tedious" in the same paragraph 8 times.

And, yes, if you've watched Pointer all year, and in that game in particular, he was CLEARLY the aggressor and agitator throughout that game. And, he is fond of a little trash talking, every game. I don't mind that, but I try to be fairly objective, and he needs to mature. Mine was an observation, not a diatribe, as your post above against me is. Get a dictionary and look up the definition of diatribe.

And, I live in Nassau County, and have had season tix for about 30 years, so your assumptions are as wrong as they can possibly be. From the few posts that I make, I am not sure how you discern the things that you allege above, but your are obviously the one with thin skin, as you accuse me of being. That's
pretty funny, given the tenor and frantic nature of your post, which speaks for itself. If I misconstrued your attitude toward Lavin, then I apologize, but I find the personal nature of your post offensive.

As I said, I ain't getting into a pissing contest. Besides, I don't even know what half of what you posted even means or alludes to, so I can't respond. Most of the posts I make are very pro-team, and optimistic, despite the events and losses (but you wouldn't know that since you don't read my posts). I can only assume that you must have me confused with someone else.

Since you read everything I think you know exactly what I alluded to........guys like you have no problem calling people out and insulting others opinions, whether it be about Lavin, a player, or the program but can't take it when it is re-directed! Do I question your opinion because you think Lavin misjudged Jones' talent? Are you "anti-Lavin" because you said so while basing your opinion on the talent of a freshman sub in the one game he was not buried on the bench?
If Pointer was CLEARLY the aggressor, you free the ND player of blame but last I checked, he was also suspended and did not issue a public apology.

As for my other allusions, you know exactly what I refer to when threads are allowed and encouraged about other members (remember Joey3?) or about the level of our coach's intelligence (see Lavin, the Genius) or any number of threads that you seem to have no problems with.
If you do not want to get into pissing contests, then don't take pot shots at people without explaining why, especially when one is responding tongue-n-cheek to a "RUMOR". Yes, even that nasty rumor that Lavin's agent floated his name to USC. But, as I hinted, you guys find it easier to create rumors about a college president or a player. God forbid one is about, as Fun would say, the TGAPL!
Have a nice day.

Obviously, if the kid has an opportunity to get a masters from Harvard, its a no brainer he has to go.

Or Yale or Columbia or Princeton or even Cornell.

Or Suffolk County Community College etc.

I have to work being less serious and more lighthearted, and some of the posts here are
SO SERIOUS
I for one just want to enjoy all the good stuff Coach Lavin has brought here.
Maybe I'M MISSING SOMETHING. Maybe the JARVIS-ROBERTS years were wonderful, filled with top recruits, excellent staff, notoriety, public awareness, a host of positive publicity. Yeah, we were so eager to follow the team and games and recruiting in that glorious era.

I said this a while back, we will not catch every recruit nor win every game, but what an improvement this program has enjoyed.

Whatever, and
all the best

Damn some of you guys are thick!
For all you slow scholars on this thread, I was answering Simply Red in a non-sequitur!
He reposted a "rumor" here that was also on JJ. It did NOT INCENSE me....it humored me!
I threw out there ALL the other petty rumors some of you knuckleheads have been posting since December and followed it with a LOL! That means laugh out loud for some of you thin skinned reading disabled.
As for daggers, geez...give it a rest!
For future reference for you accountants out there:
Non sequitur (literary device), an irrelevant, often humorous comment to a preceding topic or statement.

Frankly, no I don't know what you're talking about, I'm not a moderator who exercises any control over the threads you find objectionable, and I virtually NEVER comment on those threads that you allude to. And, to say I am "one of those guys" is just stupid since again, I rarely post, have never engaged you that I can recall on any topic, and don't engage in the petty dialogue you are railing against. Again, I can only imagine you are confusing me with someone else.

As for your "non sequiturs" they are neither funny nor pithy nor clever as the fact that you have to explain that they are non-sequiturs would suggest. THey are actually snarky aspersions that belie your real dislike of the coach.

I merely pointed out that the staff may have miscalculated not playing him more earlier in the season. And I commented that he had earned playing down the stretch last game as opposed to Marco. Don't put words in my mouth, that's a really lazy, low-brow and sloppy way of arguing your points.

I will refrain oorm commenting further, but I am sure you will have at it, since your obviously just a punk, regardless of how old you are. Make sure to take your meds, OK?

If Gift leaves to go to any other school it would be an absolute travesty and an embarrassment to the program. He is a great kid, great student and I have no doubt that his ten points and six boards a game wouldhave given us a few more wins and an NCAA birth.
There was absolutely no reason not to play Gift this season.

FWIW I spoke to Gift's foster parents about a month ago and they said he plans to play for St.John's next season.

Unless some issue has risen during the past month I expect him to return tomSt. john.s for next season.

No scholarships at Harvard, though.

Yet somehow they manage. They have a freshman big from Nigeria coming in and Gift is a good fit there. The way Chris Jones looked yesterday, it might be an opportunity of mutual benefit.

Athletes aren't paying their own way. They get grants in aid.

100 percent subsidization? If not, I think he should also explore Stanford, Cal, or Northwestern and see what they have to say.

I am snarky, a punk, just plain stupid, non-clever, non-funny, tedious and worst of all, thinks Steve Lavin cannot coach himself out of a paper bag.
You, on the other hand you are "merely" pointing out staff miscalculations, disagree with sitting Gift, think Lavin may not be using his bench wisely yet......you are not a punk, are very smart, are never snarky, and are very funny and never misread statements ending with LOL because you do not take meds because you are just so freaking perfect. You made me tedious!!
In all seriousness, I hope to buy you a few beers some day and some of my closest friends may agree with you but instead of a punk....they would say I was a prck with a good heart. LOL!

Unless some issue has risen during the past month I expect him to return tomSt. john.s for next season.

That's really great news. Solid citizen. Provides real muscle, especially if he gets to play forward instead of center. On a less serious note, I'd put him in charge of Harrison, because if GG told me to keep my mouth shut, I'd be a fool to ignore him.

Sorry but Gift would have helped this season in more ways than one and if our great staff could not find another JC who is 6 8 or more to replace him at the 4/5 with guaranteed minutes well then we are in big trouble.

Absolutely agree North. I believe that we would have at least 3 more wins and an NCAA invite if Gift were not redshirted. If we were a borderline NCAA team as Lavin predicted then why would he take the chance and redshirt Gift. He either made a big calculated mistake or let's get real here, it is obvious there was a deal made with Gift during the recruiting process.

What's really tedious is that you feel the need to type "Xtian" because it is obviously way too much work and effort to type Christian!!!! And what's even worse is that you didn't even use it correctly!! If you wanted to use that abbreviation, it should have been "Xian", not "Xtian". The "X" replaces "Christ", not "Chris", sort of the same the way that "christmas" becomes "xmas".

What's really tedious is that you feel the need to type "Xtian" because it is obviously way too much work and effort to type Christian!!!! And what's even worse is that you didn't even use it correctly!! If you wanted to use that abbreviation, it should have been "Xian", not "Xtian". The "X" replaces "Christ", not "Chris", sort of the same the way that "christmas" becomes "xmas".

Thanks for your effort to nitpick but those that know me also know I don't take crap from anyone.....especially guys that call themselves Jumbo. If I wanted to give Christian Jones a Chinese name (Xian) I would have taken your advice but obviously you know no Asians with the common name Xian so I am assuming your good intentions here. I also never take the "Christ" out of Christmas as you seem comfortable doing in your example. May X be with you. ;)

I apologize for my part in degrading the level of conversation on this thread. I think we should be more civil on this board. We're all fans of the same team.
