Get Ready for 25-26!

Not sure if it was mentioned, but Utah assistant coached Odih at South Kent, and it looks like we still overcame that for a kid who would likely get more minutes with the Utes.

And looking over the portal, PG is really slim pickings so we were lucky to get someone at the level of Darling this late.

Staff absolutely kicked ass this offseason.

And Matt is an absolute shark. Don't ever let him leave.

Will Rick tweet that the roster is complete after Odih pops tomorrow?

Real question is, what will Mike Repole say at the Kentucky Derby about our portal? Will he say we're done, or that we're taking someone's best player after the combine?

I actually hope not, because that means he's waiting on one last big-time splash in May.
My opinion is he says its done/great job staff, go on a two week vacation in Miami, but pay close tabs to the NBA combine.

Matt was born for this role.

Hopefully MR doesn’t abandon us after those 5 years. 🤞🏽

You let him pick the coach. He's proven that he loves the school and program more than anyone. All the things that are important to our biggest fans are important to him: MSG rocking, energetic sense of community, winning, marketing, etc. He's also proven that he can make great decisions.
To say that we are lucky to have him is the understatement of the century.

Ideally, we go Pitino Jr. coming off a good run at Xavier with Sr. in a hands-on special advisor role. But let's enjoy the Rick Pitino era. I hope he's here 10 years.

I don’t see Pitino leaving in 2-3 years if this thing is really rolling.

I mean, he wanted us to choose Bob Hurley Jr. We could've really been screwed with that hire.

But I also think he needs to be a major part of the decision making process, and with the facilities/recent success/NIL budget/MSG buzz, you have to believe we can attract some of the top coaches.

I agree the job has more appeal and any search in this $ era has to include input of a major donor. Pitino is the perfect fit for the game today. I would not want to be the guy to succeed him nor assume anyone is HC in waiting.

Considering how lost the program was, my “advice to myself” is to enjoy every minute of Rick’s tenure and realize what appeared to be a program mired in mediocrity forever wasn’t. It just took a brilliant SJU President, mega NIl supporter, other heavy donors, grass roots fundraising and a HOF HC & staff to get on very positive plane. To continue that, it will warrant great leadership obviously, but for now enjoy this ride and don’t spend too much time on what comes next.

The two low key things fans should be paying attention to are: does Shanley get another term/extension here, and/or how are admissions (particularly enrollment and applications) this year and next?

This can all fall apart if Shanley is gone and/or the proof of basketball raising all boats for the university isn't there for a new President to see. We need the Pitino era's ultimate headline to be that it made St. John's a basketball school again in culture and investment.

It will likely take some time for St. John's to benefit from the brand recognition helping its application/enrollment figures in the way that (theoretically) Villanova does. And St. John's has a much higher hill to climb than (again for example) Nova. They have to think of this in 5 and 10 year terms, I think. And reinvest wisely in the other aspects of the school along the way.

It wasn’t too long ago that the powers to be at SJU banished Repole from having anything to do with the SJU men’s basketball program. They may not officially barred him from the program but they completely silenced him. Right now they are probably basking in the success of the program but hopefully Father Shanley will prevent them from any say in basketball decisions going forward.

We're already in year three of Rick. So hopefully a trend is beginning to show.
