QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team's contest with DePaul scheduled for Saturday at Carnesecca Arena has been postponed due to a COVID issue within the Red Storm program. The contest will be rescheduled for a later date.

"While we're obviously disappointed at not being able to play today, postponing the game is unequivocally the right thing to do," said Athletic Director Mike Cragg.  "The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff has always been our top priority and we saw no reason to take any unnecessary risk.  We thank Coach Leitao, the DePaul administration and the BIG EAST Conference for their cooperation in this manner."

Very sorry to hear. With the infection rate increasing, it was inevitable that this would happen at some point during the season

I hope and pray that the person(s) who have contracted COVID will make a quick and full recovery.

First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers go out to the players and staff.  In these scary times, we are all reminded that there are more important things than basketball.

I imagine we won't be playing games for at least a week or two.

On a far less important note, if we continue to struggle on the court after we resume play, I truly hope my fellow posters won't  blame it on the pandemic or rust.

Shocking that if you let all the players/staff go home across the country during break that there would be an issue. Probably should have kept a tight bubble and try to finish season.

Your hope is "truly" noted.

Thanks, Paultz.  That "truly" means a lot.

Sorry to hear of the covid infection . I hope that all are safe and will take care of themselves and their fellow members of the program .

Well, I had a fear of the layoff and the kids and staff dispersing, but for a different reason, obviously. Don't know if we were the last BE team standing without covid issues, but it felt that way. Here's praying that anyone and everyone comes out of this OK.

There was no guarantee keeping a tight bubble would have made a difference.  Not surprised but felt the odds were that we would have to shutdown at some point.

This is a sad and very scary occurrence and let's all say a prayer for the quick and complete recovery of all infected.

I hope for the infected players and staff, a full and speedy recovery. I also hope we stop referring to "letting" amateurs spend time with their families. This is a particularly cruel time for everyone, and the games are just a diversion.

Plus, the women's program had to shut down last week, and I believe they stuck around in their virtual bubble (though redmennorth would know for sure).  If that's the case, it was probably a matter of time if they stuck around, as well.

It was going to happen after the Christmas break. I have family members who are responsible adults who have tested positive. You had 15 players going to various parts of the country, someone was bound to test positive upon their return. This has nothing to do with irresponsibility, it is just the magnitude of the disease and the amount of people you come in contact with when traveling. I know that some may feel they should have stayed on campus, but would that have been fair to them? Some had been separated from their families since July, which is a long time not to see your loved ones.

It may not have even been a player. It may have been a coach, manager, or member of the support staff. Think about it, even Jay Wright got the virus.

I hope that everyone comes through this healthy and we go on to have a successful season.

St. John's athletic director Mike Cragg tells me school will determine further action at a later date, when asked if program will pause. #sjubb

St John’s 12-day layoff is going to turn out to be even longer.Saturday’s game against DePaul was postponed less than a half hour before tip-off due to COVID-19 issues within the Red Storm program.“While we’re obviously disappointed at not being able to play today, postponing the game is unequivocally the right thing to do,” athletic director Mike Cragg said in a released statement. “The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff has always been our top priority and we saw no reason to take any unnecessary risk.

We thank Coach Leitao, the DePaul administration and the BIG EAST Conference for their cooperation in this manner.”Prior to the news, St. John’s had managed to avoid any positive tests since players returned to campus in late July. Players recently were allowed to go home for a few days to see family. St. John’s was initially expected to play Villanova on Dec. 30, but coach Jay Wright suggested they push back the game to give both teams a chance to see family during the holidays.

Panther's comments speak about the Contagion of the Virus , which remains a Medical Problem until the Vaccines begin to take effect .  It's not a issue of  pointing fingers at these Players no less than pointing fingers anywhere . Although I have a particular anger at the Chinese Communists who let this Virus become a Worldwide Death Sentence ! We still don't have a definitive answer as to why , with Masks , Social Distancing , Lockdowns , School closings , and all the measures taken , that the Contagion continues . I doubt that the Players , Coaches , etc are deliberately not taking precautions but , it is puzzling why some of these Coaches , Players , etc are running around the sidelines without Masks on . I do see , BE Cosches and sideline Players wearing masks at all times . It seems Football is violating Protocols more frequently .  At this point , College BB may have to do what the NHL did and Bubble the entire Conferences  on a league by league basis . Reduce the season to end by mid or late February. Then decide if the NCAA tourney is possible . Tough decisions have to be made .

If we lose a big chunk of the season maybe try something radically different. A double elimination conference tournament in a bubble

Reminder:  This is NOT a politics site - there are many other places where you can express your political opinions to your heart's content.  This isn't one of them.  Political posts of any stripe are going to be deleted, and that will be followed in short order by suspension of posting privileges (either temporarily or permanently depending on the degree of the offense).

Feel free to discuss the vaccine on the appropriate thread in the Players Forum - though the "no politics" rule applies there as well.

Unfortunately we may not have much SJU hoops to discuss for a couple of weeks, so I guess the "Around College Basketball" thread is going to be carrying the load unless we come up with a way to break it down some.

We've done very well to date. As Panther said, not surprising someone tested positive after xmas break and associated travel and/or exposure to people they haven't recently been with.
Prayers for all and hope this turns out to be a small issue with no one getting seriously ill.

Personally I was surprised kids were sent home for a winter break to see their families. The current guidance is to not get together with people if you don't live in the same household. Even if it's their immediate family, they don't live with them currently so it was a huge risk. Figured this would happen.
