If this team had a real PG. I’m not bashing Rutherford but as a senior I expected more. Granted it’s his first year with many of the guys PLUS it’s a new coach. But if this group has a PG my god

I hope playing without the starters is not a real tactic for tougher games. Perhaps coach wants all the backups when he is trying to see who steps up to provide leadership among the reserves. If a couple of starters were in, the reserves may defer too much. Again not a great tactic vs a West Virginia ir Villanova but vs Wagner and St Peter’s it can be instructive. So far, it would appear different guys step up on different days but noone is consistent yet.

Too sloppy the last 8 min of the half. What happened to the press and the 40 min of hell that was supposed to be deployed? Are we saving that for the Big East?

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. We have Rutherford who is solid enough but not really gonna hurt teams at this level. Dunn is a scorer but not a true point. These turnovers would go waaay down with a floor general. If McGriff wasn’t injured he’d get a lot of time here. Next season we have Posh and McGriff. The future is bright. Dunn can slide over to SG/combo type role. Our frontcourt coming along great.

These sloppy runs are gonna happen this year. Only thing I’d like to see is improve is sloppy rotation on defense. I know we can do better, especially with our depth. We have to learn to punish teams for a full 40 defensively, and that doesn’t mean pressing all game. Just playing best possible D.

A beatdown squad from 22 to 32 by half like the barkley artest teams.
Not get sloppy letting an inferior team cut the lead to 14 by half.

To be a real good team nothing is ever good enough.
They gotta keep working.

Lets see them get it up to 24 by the under 16minute timeout.

Agree with earlier comment. Lack of pg will really hurt us. Neither Dunn nor Rutherford are particularly adept ball handlers. Free throw shooting another Achilles heel. Very disappointed in Greg Williams. Good kid, but looks absolutely lost.

In my uninformed view, i believe Coach thinks playing the reserves for a lot of time is more important than forcing turnovers with a 20 point lead at this stage. I really think we are seeing more evaluation of talent than practicing game tactics with the second tier. If that’s not the point, then I agree, whatever the objective, it isn’t working well.

For this game there is more to be gained by playing the end of the bench. Everything else should be focus upon execution. In my opinion Sears and Williams need as much burn as possible.

Agree. There is no difference winning by 20 or 30.

Aside from the turnovers from our PGs, their reluctance to take (and make) a mid range shot spells doom when conference play begins.

Rutherford was a good stop gap at point under the circumstances. Good on defense and doesn't hurt us but is a complete non-threat offensively and not a very creative playmaker. Dunn not a point guard and neither is Williams.

For the fun of it I’d love to see a coach pull any player who takes a step back into a longer shot. Take what you have. Stepping back into a longer shot is not a normal motion.

I will watch the game when I get home and haven't read the thread so I can watch with fresh eyes but looking at the halftime box score reminded me of something that was also a good change vs. Wagner. Assist #'s. They were quite low for the four games leading up to the Wagner game, but they had 23 vs Wagner and have 12 in the first half today. Of course the competition helps and also you need to make your shots to get assists but still a positive trend.

Yes we have certainly been sloppy at times for sure, but I love using these early season games to get our entire team out there and to work. In the past we had to worry about losing these. Now we aren’t worrying, just working. Different than in the past.
