Friday SJU Tip Off Event Attendees

My personal takeaways.......
 • I thought Posh looked even quicker and more fit than last year.
 • Omar Stanley and Pinzon will definitely play and contribute.
 • Despite being 6'9", Aaron Wheeler really loves being out at the 3pt line.
 • Drissa is bigger and stronger than I thought, but is also a work in progress
 • Stef Smith is smooth with a sweet stroke
 • For a real big guy, Soriano can move pretty well.  Not sure he will be an aggressive shot blocker
At the end of the day, tonight means nothing.  Let's get the season started.

All for furlough, but rough outing for Champ....

Yeah but he’s the last guy I’m worried about.  He’ll be laser-focused come season time.
I remember watching Ponds go through the. motions at midnight madness before his Jr year and thinking "I hope this isn't a sign of things to come". As it turned out, Ponds to a large degree had a let down his Jr year. Good numbers, but not the kind of POY season everyone expected. Now, Champ is not Ponds, especially in terms of his work ethic, I trust that he won't be resting on his laurels(or his Hardys).   Having said that, I worry about everyone, especially Champ and Posh since we are going to be so reliant on them if we are to have a successful season. We have depth, but there's a big drop off in the talent level after Champ and Posh.  If those 2 stay healthy and have the kinds of seasons they are capable of, we can have a very good year. But make no mistake, we have very little margin for error.  This is not a roster built to absorb an off year or an injury to either player.

More from Zach

The name that jumped out at me on the above list was class of 2024 attendee Andreo Ash from Liverpool (NY) high school.  Liverpool is a suburb of Syracuse.

Andreo is projected  by some onlookers to be a 5* seven footer.  His AAU coach is former St. John’s standout David Cain

Time will tell whether Andreo has any long term interest in attending St. John’s however at this point in time Andreo and his family have enough interest in St. John’s to travel to New York at their own expense to attend last evening’s St. John’s basketball event.

Let’s hope that David Cain can deliver one more assist.

Defense really isn’t something to take from an event like this but it was worth noting Pinzons length made it difficult for Champ to get off many clean releases. That’s a nice contrast to Posh’s bull dog approach.

Fwiw apparently Pinzon has really turned heads in practice and staff more than pleased with his versatility & skill level. We’ll see how that equates to real play, but just passing it along. JPM114 may be right on RP being a contributor year one.

Pinzon looked effortless out there.   He’s gonna be a stud for us.

I’m excited for him, he’s just a player who can do a bunch of things out there. But if he gets legitimate minutes that probably means one of the 3 transfer guards isn’t as good as we hoped. Posh, Wusu, Smith, Mathis, Coburn + champ. His best bet for minutes this season is to prove worthy of full time back up pg spot for 10 or so minutes. If Smith is much better choice it will be hard for Pinzon to get significant minutes once season gets going.

Having to find minutes for a bunch of good players is a nice problem to have

If we don’t use Pinzon this year we could lose him. It’s a luxury to have a 6 6 point guard with high bb iq good passer and a decent shooter. He’s the future of St John’s bb and getting more talented Latinos from the city and elsewhere..

You could be right, but St. John’s has never been in more of a position to focus about the present. You have the best scorer in the big east, winning big with him this season is the best thing we could do for our future IMO.

You don't play a kid motivated by the fear of losing him at least the real programs don't. He'll get the playing time he earns and deserves.

The way some of our fan base talk about this kid, you'd think he was the 2nd coming of Magic Johnson. The kid was ranked outside the top 200 from 247. I couldn't find him ranked anywhere else. I know, I know, rankings aren't everything, but they are something most of the time. Maybe this kid will turn out to be good player for us, maybe he won't.  But some the expectations being placed on him from our fan base, the large majority of whom have never seen him play, are downright ridiculous.

Let’s wait until the season starts before we form opinions as to the quality and proficiency of our players.

Why would we do that when we can confidently declare their abilities before seeing them play.  /media/kunena/emoticons/tongue.png

Kassoum Yakwe posted an IG picture of him and Tariq Owens at the tip-off, great to see them back

Thanks..found it.

Also saw Yakwe pic playing ball over the summer at Rutgers. Wonder if he's enrolled as a student there. Thought he got masters at Uconn so maybe a PhD in future!!

Kassoum & Tariq always struck me as two great kids regardless of how things turned out for them at SJU basketball wise. A credit to them and the university that they were excited to join the Friday night festivities.
