Free Throws Free Throws Free Throws!!!!!

Remember some stories that coaches wouldn't let the players leave the practice court until they made 10 free throws in a row. I guess Coach doesn't use that tactic. Maybe start in smaller increments. 2 or 3 in a row. Also use to be a guy that made 100+ in a row. Thought he worked with some teams 30 years ago. Got to do something to improve the percentage. Takes the wind out of the sails. Sometimes you are praying for 1 out of two.

A lot of coaches run practices in stations. A lot of players can make free throws in succession, and you've probably seen stations where during practice guys go to a station to shoot 2 FTs to simulate a game situation. While you can work on form, and repetition means a lot, a lot of it comes down to what's between your ears when you step to the line in a game situation, which is why FTs down the stretch are increasingly more difficult to hit.

There are stories that Wilt Chamberlain would routinely take money from other Lakers, including Jerry West, in practice by outshooting them from the FT line. Chamberlain of course, was one of the worst FT shooters in history.

Chamberlain tied with most FTs in a game all-time, at 28/32, Adrian Dantley also had 28/29.

Interesting about Wilt, given that he was a lifetime .511 FT shooter (a .613 best, a .380 worst ... .380!). Dantley, on the other hand, had a career average of .818.

Mussini got to the line some early in the year, which boosted our percentage. He was actually 2nd in the big east in percentage as of last weekend.

The rest of the team, has probably just been somewhat over 50% all year. Sima will probably always be bad at it, because his hands are huge, but this should be a top priority for everyone else this offseason (although Ellison probably does not need as much work as the others).

Mussini is the only really good Free Throw shooter on the team. Johnson is pretty good (although his miss at the end of the Seton Hall game was a killer. The biggest miss of the year.) The rest of the team has not been good enough to call reliable in anyway. See the breakdown below:

Durand Johnson 64 for 87 .736%
Federico Mussini 73 for 84 .869%
Ron Mvouika 47 for 71 .662%
Kassoum Yakwe 49 for 93 .527%
Malik Ellison 56 for 88 .636%
Yankuba Sima 24 for 64 .375%
Christian Jones 42 for 70 .600%
Felix Balamou 34 for 54 .630%
Amar Alibegovic 22 for 36 .611%
Darien Williams 3 for 4 .750%
Abdul Dial 2 for 2 1.000%
Elijah Holifield 1 for 2 .500%
Team Totals 417 for 655 .637%

And Holifield bringing the team average down. :)

Last year our free throw percentage as a team was absolutely terrible. We ranked 340th out of 351 Division One teams at just 63.6%. This was unacceptable and the hope was we would improve greatly in this area.

So far this season the results have been much better. For a variety of reasons (better players, more focus on free throw shooting, players hard work and some better bounces) we have improved greatly. We currently rank 125th out of Division one schools at 71.2%.

Hopefully we will maintain or improve our free throw percentage for the rest of the season. Below I have broken down the performances at the line for the individuals on our team so far this year.

Player
Shamorie Ponds 78.6% 55 for 70
Marcus LoVett 84.6% 55 for 65
Bashir Ahmed 68.% 51 for 75
Federico Mussini 82.4% 14 for 17
Malik Ellison 52.3% 23 for 44
Yankuba Sima 72.0 % 18 for 25
Tariq Owens 74.2% 23 for 31
Kassoum Yakwe 71.0% 22 for 31
Darien Williams 68.8% 11 for 16
Elijah Holifield 00.0% 0 for 2
R. Freudenberg 75.0% 3 for 4
Amar Alibegovic 45.5% 5 for 11
Justin Cole 00.0% 0 for 2
Total: 71.2% 280 for 393

In tonight's 91-86 win on the road against Providence. St. John's shot 17 for 19 89.5% from the line.
Providence was 18 for 27 66.7% from the line. That was a huge difference tonight. This is a game we definitely don't win with last year's free throw shooting woes.

Last year's team would have trouble scoring 91 points in two games. ;)

In yesterday's win against Seton Hall we shot 90.5 % from the line (19 for 21) while Seton Hall shot 65.4% from the line (17 for 26). Had they shot better from the line and we shot worse this might have been another frustrating loss yesterday instead of a clear cut victory.

We are now ranked 85th in the country in free throw percentage, shooting 72.9 % from the line. If we finish the season with those numbers then the ranking of 85th will be the second highest ranking we have had in this century (the 2006/2007 team finished 73rd on 72.3%). The 72.9 % from the line would be the highest percentage we have had in this century.

Kudos to Coach Mullin and the team for turning that glaring weakness from last year into a strength this year.

Take out Malik Ellison and we are at 75%. The fact that he only played five minutes might have been bigger than I thought.
