Fraschilla, Jarvis & Roberts talk Mullin

I actually believe their is a lot of truth in the article. My feelings are that St. John's always wanted one of their own, but where were they? Their was never a true St. John's candidate other than Mullin, who really has been occupied for the last 30 years. Now was the perfect time for Mullin with the new hierarchy at the top of St. John's. St. John's has been looking for a Looie clone forever, someone who would love and embrace the School, never look to leave, be a great ambassador, and be well respected in the press.
Who better than Chris Mullin. It's a match made in Heaven. If everything falls in place and St.John's wins big, then they will have found their "Home Run".

John Kresse, from Brooklyn, played at SJU, long time assistant and as close to a protege as Lou had. Fifth highest winning percentage in D1 history. Not saying he'd have taken it if offered, or that it wasn't, but an obvious and over looked choice.

Revered in Charleston, where the arena is named after him. I think his name was raised in one of the early searches, but he was very happy where he was.

Coache Kresse is now 72 years old. Tough job for someone his age to begin a rebuild. Travel, etc. I remember when he left St. John's with his wife who had accepted women's HC position down south.

There is some truth to the idea that St. John's believed that they needed "one of their own". That obviously wasn't the reason Fran was fired and I don't think that's what he was trying to convey either. The hiring of one of St. John's own is about Mullin, so the comment is appropriate and true.

I spent several hours with Coach Carnesecca at an NCAA tournament event the year Jarvis was fired. We discussed the coaching situation and Coach very clearly stated, " to bring the program back we need one of our own. We haven't had that for a while now". Coach was very influential in the search and that attitude has been the prevailing thought for a long time. This time it seems likely to work out. However, back then there wasn't any " one of our own" except for John Kresse. Now there is Mullen, Jackson and Wennington. We all know why Fran was fired, but that attitude was way too much in the administration's minds when they got offended by him talking to other schools after a couple year's of success. It's a very parochial attitude. Instead, most schools with sought after coaches give their guy an extension and a raise if other schools inquire about their availability.

As for Jarvis, nobody thinks he's a bigger fraud than me, but facilities have been a challenge in the past. Jarvis knew when he took the job that it would be a challenge, but he's got the dorm vs. apartment off campus thing backwards. I spoke to Bob Hurley at another NCAA event a couple years later and I asked him about getting the program back on the right track. He said, in part it's facilities. When Bobby was looking at schools they considered St John's, but they didn't believe he could handle living off campus in an apartment well. So, the lack of dorms was a problem for them. There are always challenges and Mullin will face his own as well.

SJU believed we needed one of our own after the experiences we had with 4 (Fran, Jarvis, Roberts, and Lavin) who weren't.

Beast, what you say may be true, but it wasn't the point. The point was this idea has been there for a long time. It didn't just dawn on everybody this past season that St John's needs to bring back one of its own, so let's reach out to Mullin. It's been an opinion that's carried weight for a long time probably since Coach Lou retired. It's bit them in ass on occasion to.

I think if we offered CM before this, he would not have accepted. I think this time, the timing on both sides was proper.

Roberts wants to be a head coach again. Taking shots at a former employer is not a recommended bullet point to include on your resume'.

The other two are just egomaniacs. They both had plenty to work with here, and both squandered it. They are also comfortable where they are now, but have yet to learn humility.

Fraschilla had a combination of personal and SJU connections to local kids to make this area his recruiting fiefdom. But he was a madman, and it was his undoing (and not just here).

Jarvis had good will built from an elite eight run. He could have landed very good recruits, but he was unable to be more human, and less crass.

Imagine this staff taking over the program following an elite eight appearance and a BE tourney win?

Common thread for both these guys is that they both looked to jump to new jobs soon after taking the job at SJ...they are both full of it...Fraschilla had huge opportunity but thought he was bigger than SJ -- which he ultimately found out was not the case...

The bottom line for me is...

why do I care what the three coaches who basically sent this program into the abyss have to say about Mullin being hired as head coach.

To Fraschilla, Jarvis and Roberts... Go away, nobody cares about your opinion.
