Fraschilla, Jarvis & Roberts talk Mullin

Great perspectives. Mullin definitely has a few things that prior coaches dont. He was an NBA All star. More importantly, he has the hearts of all SJU fans. He will get it done and the school is giving him all the best staff members to give him best chances. All he needs to do is get the bus rolling with big time recruits, and I have little doubt he can get guys willing to work, to the next level. He's known as one of the biggest students of the game...ever. The skills he can teach players are something that zero head coaches out there can impart.

“From my hiring to the present day, they were never satisfied with someone outside of their own family,” said Fran Fraschilla, Mahoney’s replacement. Fraschilla was fired after a 22-win season in 1998. “It doesn’t matter how hard you try, unless you’re getting to the tournament consistently. I felt I wasn’t a St. John’s guy, and that permeated through my two years at the school.”

What an absolute joke.

Ruined my mood.

They also don't like coaches showing their d!(k to their student athletes

Perhaps Fran would like us to believe that he was fired by New Mexico State because he also wasn't a New Mexico State guy.

New Mexico, not State.

So Jarvis feels his failure to recruit local talent had to do with having dorms, and not because he was arrogant, lazy, and totally alienated HS coaches in the Metro area, who hated him? What a joke.

And Fran's response about being "outside the family" is laughable.

Norm, to his credit, responded like the gentleman he is.

Coach Frannie seems to have forgotten that for those two years he owned NYC. We all thought that we finally had Looie's replacement and then some. He knows that he was his own worst enemy. Dropping his pants and seeking out NM for a coaching gig was not SJU's doing.

Coach Mahoney was "family" and he was let go.

Coach Jarvis also started out like a great replacement, only to again do himself in.

Both of these guys know that they screwed up themselves and it had nothing to do with our fans or the administration.

Coaches Frannie and Jarvis still seem to be slimy after all these years. I guess we should not be surprised.

Sour grapes from Jarvis. Loser.

I enjoyed every single observation!
Wow they're not exactly Moe Larry and Curly but nothing new here with this threesome

(as I tried to allude to Chris' DNA = he only knows how to garner basketball wisdom work hard and succeed so we are fortunate of fires, the obvious)

Well we have
A pig's DNA
An arrogance DNA
And just a decent mild mensch DNA

Each needs to take responsibility for their path and the manner/reason for the end of their respective SJU journey.

all the best

Thanks Otis for opening this great topic - I see David Russell ( our own?) write the piece?

By the way after looking at the article again, I need to agree that each of these three coaches did acknowledge the upside of hiring Chris Mullin. Funny though how Fran says Mullin was a "good" shooter.

Norm may not have been as good of a coach as the others, but clearly he is head and shoulders in class above Fran & Jarvis.

Jarvis made a legit point. The stipend was a nice perk. Fran really sounds like he holds a grudge. And Norm is a strong character guy and a high quality assistant coach.

Both Jarvis and Fraschilla are just full of beans when it comes to their opinion that SJU always wanted a SJU guy to run the program. Was Lapchick an SJU grad? As you probably heard Lapchick didn't even have a college degree, and was fond of saying that the only thing keeping him from a college degree was that he didn't have a high school degree. So, over the past nearly 60 years of SJU coaches, only Carnesecca and Mulzoff went to SJU.

What was missing with those guys (Jarvis and Fran) is that they never made themselves St. John's. It's clear by their comments that they considered themselves outsiders. Both did work for Ed Manetta, himself an SJU grad.

I often write about Jay Wright. Here's a story I haven't told that tells so much about integrating yourself into the core of the university:

Jay Wright speaks to incoming freshmen at orientation, and then is always the keynote speaker at the senior breakfast, which is always a sellout. I've been to two of them. Here is an approximation of one of the key points he made at one of the breakfasts:

"Guys, I want to congratulate you all on graduating Villanova this weekend. Remember when I spoke to you as incoming freshmen? I told you that now YOU are Villanova, and everything you do from here on out represents the university. Well, I have to tell you, no group of Villanovans has ever represented this school better than you have. In basketball you were our sixth man, and without you we could not have achieved what we have done together. And remember this, you will always be Villanovans, and I've loved getting to know so many of you."

This is from a guy who went to Bucknell. Yea, he was a long time assistant under Rollie, and yea he marrried a cheerleader - who he often visited by driving a long distance from Bucknell to Nova on weekends. But Wright made himself a Villanovan through and through by connecting with fans, students, parents, and administration. It's a lot of work, work that maybe Fran, Jarivs, and even Lavin didn't bother doing at SJU. But Wright seems to do it with joy, and does it so easily.

Mullin is a St. John's man by heritage, and as Dr.Gempeshaw noted during the press conference, is expected to be not only the coach, but a great ambassador for the school. Fran's comments about speaking 75 times to alumni groups and univ. function is likely an exaggeration and he seemed annoyed by it. Mullin will light up every room and every group of SJU students, faculty, or alums that he speaks to. Kind of like that Italian leprechaun - the giant of a man - who is his mentor and coach. And he can coach a little, and bring in the type of players he is aiming at, the SJU world will be perfect again.

Wonderful post Beast, thorough, insightful, enjoyable...making parallels to what Villanova has and what we will have...

Since its early morning as I type, did you remain up all night to compose this 'masterpiece'? A post one needs to re-read.

Thanks again...
These continue to be fun, positive SJU times to relish - and - posts like yours further enrich the moment.

Roberts wants to be a head coach again. Taking shots at a former employer is not a recommended bullet point to include on your resume'.

The other two are just egomaniacs. They both had plenty to work with here, and both squandered it. They are also comfortable where they are now, but have yet to learn humility.

Fraschilla had a combination of personal and SJU connections to local kids to make this area his recruiting fiefdom. But he was a madman, and it was his undoing (and not just here).

Jarvis had good will built from an elite eight run. He could have landed very good recruits, but he was unable to be more human, and less crass.

Imagine this staff taking over the program following an elite eight appearance and a BE tourney win?

SS&G - you are one of the kindest and gentlest posters here, and your generosity of spirit elevate this board. Thanks for your nice words.

Something in my posts has annoyed someone on here in the last 2 days, who has minus 5'd me in karma despite no intended acrimony on my part. Oh well, that's why that stuff tends to be nonsense.

We should post our opinions in a good natured way without be condescending to others while kreeping in mind that we are all for the same cause which is to see SJU compete at a high level while enjoying a
plethora of knowledge which our fellow posters possess
