Ha... maybe Lavin's salary is not included yet either if they are working on Financials a year or two prior.

At least they sold the Oakdale campus.

Good to see improvement at least via the methodology used here by Forbes.

I've been a very vocal critic of bobby g as president. I still believe he was a horrible choice but to his credit has done a very good job at holding the line on costs and improving our financial stability.

it's a major concern that a Nova or Gtown, who have much stronger donor bases than sju are only graded a B.

See the damage a National Championship can cause?

What's surprisng is that G'Towns endowment is only around the $1.5 billion area.

One would think it would be a lot higher.

In addition, I don't think Nova has surpassed the $1 billion as of yet, although Beast would know better.

SJU is roughly around the $650 million mark, give or take

I believe SJU endowment has to be in the 700 million dollar range now. Also, im not so sure Nova base is stronger. Maybe more enthusiastic, but I doubt stronger. Georgetown numbers are a no brainer.

Villanova's capital campaign is doing quite well - not sure they've cracked $1B, but they are spending all of the campaign on capital improvements. SJU I'm sure is raising money and building up the endowment. Hopefully they will use it to hold the line on tuition increases and once again become THE affordable Catholic University of NY, as they were a generation ago.

College of the Holy Cross achieved the highest grade, an A+, my daughter's alma mater higher than Georgetown and NYU, two major universities. Another reason why HC is the Jesuit's hidden gem. You leave there with a fantastic education.

In NY State Governor Cuomo is proposing free tuition to lower and middle class students at CUNY and SUNY colleges. I am not sure on the cutoff for family hh income. If passed this will have a significant impact on the future of St John's IMO.

I could see other private colleges following Dowlings demise. It will be a flight to quality for private Universities in NY State and am not confident SJU can survive at its current size. I hope others far more connected than me can confidently state SJU will be a major player in the next 10 years like Villanova or Fordham. Frankly I just don't see it.

Don't be worried. CUNY is almost free right now if you're middle to low income. Nothing is going to change with this. They're 120 college and universities in NYC alone, I'm pretty confident SJU will be fine, But Bobby needs to hurry up with the business and liberal arts part of the university. There's no reason why the law school and Pharmacy school should be separating itself from the university this drastically. Dean Simmons has done a great Job with the law School, and the Pharmacy school is still the Pharmacy school, but everything else seems to be lagging behind. Maybe Dean Sharpe ( former georgetown dean) can do wonders with the business school, because outside of Accounting we aren't that good in the business department.

I believe the cutoff was $125K, same as Stanford.

austour thank you for the info, ST grad 13 great insight, my worry as an alum is that currently if it's not law or pharmacy what are sju's core competencies that a middle class family is willing to shell out over $100,000 in loans?

Why do that, when you can get the same education for free or much cheaper, the school can only afford so many scholarships, and eventually the bubble will burst and SJU may become a Dowling.

HC is a very fine Jesuit liberal arts school. The location kind of stinks, as Worcester has seen much better days even as a working class town. The campus is hilly and tiered, and the student population is too small for many kids (

The College of the Holy Cross was offered membership in the Big Easy but declined.

Decades later reasonable persons can differ on whether the decision by HC was in it's best long terms interests.

A portion of the below linked article:
"The conference was formed back in 1979, when Gavitt, who was a former basketball coach at Providence, got that school and St. John's, Georgetown and Syracuse together and reached out to Seton Hall, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Rutgers and Boston College, to see if they wanted to be a part of a league that put basketball first in athletic importance. In a move that some Holy Cross alumni may question forever, Holy Cross President, John E. Brooks, S.J., declined the invitation for academic reasons. Holy Cross had also formed an alliance with Boston College, UConn and Rhode Island. While three of those schools were invited, Rhode Island was not and they all wanted to stick together...at least that was the plan at the time............. "

Just to add to your comments, Seton Hall got in only when Rutgers declined. Also, Holy Cross alums have told me that the school did not want to be associated, specifically, with SJU or Seton Hall, for academic reasons. Also, the school was influenced by a wealthy alumnus, Edward Bennett Williams, who felt the school should emphasize football over basketball. The alumni I spoke to deeply regret not being in the Big East, especially as currently constituted.

Villanova president Father Peter Donohue just announced that their $600 million capital campaign launched 3 years ago, has just passed $620 million, 17 months ahead of schedule.

I bet if we had a $600 campaign we could match or even surpass that accomplishment. ;) :)
