Florida Redmen.com'ers

All this Florida talk is making me jealous, especially since it is supposed to snow more this week in NY. But also really nice that you all seem to live relatively close and are able to enjoy the weather and meet one another and talk some Johnnies basketball. Enjoy the Weather!

Just sold my summer home upstate near Rhinebeck and am in Deerfield Beach full time, or at least until virus allows Euro travel again.

I didn't know that you had a summer home near Rhinebeck
I started my career as a math teacher/coach at Ellenville HS - not far away
My wife was born and raised there

Because of Covid, I will be making my first trip in a year to the Naples, FL area next week.   Anyone in the area that would like to get together for a drink or lunch, let me know.

Beast, do you winter there?  I'm looking to make the move to Florida soon.  Naples on the west coast and Boynton Beach on the east coast are possibilities.

There is a lot of new construction in West Naples.  Beautiful sprawling communities with big man made lakes.  The only problem is it's 15 miles of traffic to the beach.  Homes close to the ocean are old, and start at 1 million for a tear down.

Similar story with Boynton. Nice communities 15 miles to the ocean, but a lot of traffic to the ocean with no place to park.  You may want to look around Punta Gorda or Port Charlotte. especially if you like boating. Home prices have risen steadily,  but are still a lot less than Naples or Boynton.  Punta Gorda has  canals everywhere, but no beach.  I think you have to go to Venice to see the ocean, and that's not that close.  There is a plus side to being 15 miles from the Atlantic or the Gulf. or even Charlotte Harbor. You will pay half as much for homeowners insurance, and won't have to flee your home if a hurricane is on the way.

Where we are in the Venice West Villages area, we are 10 minutes from the beaches.  It was a Must Have for my wife, since she loves the sand and surf and we're so close to the beaches on LI up north.

We vacation in the (Vero Beach) area and love it. Much more quiet and less over-developed than other Atlantic Coast areas.
= = =
Vero is the least congested areas I have seen in Florida which is likely because it enacted a prohibition against any structure being over 4 stories, and the closest airport for tourists is 1 hour and 45 minutes away.  During WW2 its beach area on North Dutchinson Island was used to train the military for beach landings.                You should start a grassroots Movement to get the Dodgers  to return to Vero Beach as their Spring Training  site .  For many years , even after O'Malley took the Dodgers out of Brooklyn , they continue to have Spring Training at Dodgertown .   Good Luck with the relocation .  And , if you are a Hockey fan and want to see the Rangers , Islanders , Devils you will need to buy the NHL Center Ice package on Cable . Otherwise you will only get  the Lightning or Panthers . I figure you don't care about the Knicks . Like most of us .

Hoping to relocate to Florida within a year. Problem is where. Two grandchildren live in Miami and two live in north Florida, in Atlantic Beach. Much prefer north Florida over the congested Miami area, but we're not sure where.

I know real estate in South Florida, especially in the Miami area is skyrocketing as more companies relocate there. So much to think about.

Tony....Check out Sarasota on West Coast. It is 1 hour South of Tampa and an hour plus North of Fort Myers without the heavy traffic of the Fort Myers and Naples area.

Part of my decision is proximity to an airport with a lot of direct flights to NYC.   Most Florida locations have this (except for the Panhandle)   I didn't want to be more than 1/2 hour from an airport, since for the near term we would be going back and forth and our kids would also.

Tony,  Just consider this:  In Florida real estate increases dramatically in terms of proximity to coastal waters.  You can live 5-15 miles inland, still get the same great weather, and enjoy much lower real espate costs.

As a Rockaway kid I sand and surfed myself out by age 12 so that now if I get near the ocean I am a danger to self and others (muscle memory of body surfing kicks in and other swimmers think they see a pink beluga hurtling toward them, unsure if it is intent on homicide or suicide).  Swimming laps in the back yard pool is about my speed now and I continue to plot (now that gym attendance is possible danger) how to get she who must be obeyed to allow installation of bungee cord based gym mounted into deck wall.

Insurance costs inland are about half what they are for anyone within a few miles of the Atlantic or the Gulf.  That's if you can get windstorm coverage.  If you buy a home with wood construction, like many are in Naples,  br prepared to pay a fortune to insure your home. Thee easier and more affordable way to enjoy the beach is in a condo. On the Southeast coast, 2 bedroom apartments could be had for a reasonable amount, especially if you don't mind an older building.  If going frequently to the beach is not a must, then Beast is right and buy inland. BTW, it's East Naples that has the new communities.  I'm used to thinking the beach is always east, which it is on the east coast. It's the oppostie in Naples and up through Tampa.

For what its worth . We moved from Long Island to Central Florida 10 years ago. We couldnt be happier ! First of all --All SJU games telivised --We do miss sweating at Carnesecca !!  .  If you need beaches there are closer places --we are about an hour away from beach and Orlando Airport.   But you must remember when I say 1 hr --it is always 1 hr anytime of day or year not like LI one day 20 minutes the next 2 hrs .. OH and you can go to the beach 365 !
Its 80 today --         No State Tax    --and we are open ---schools, businesses and BARS !!   Cant wait for the next Game !

I can't add anything to help with relocating to Florida, my wife only half-kiddingly thinks Florida is a thrid world country so she will never consider that as a full time option.

Our daughter is in the Ft. Lauderdale area near the airport in Dania Beach, which is a nice enough small town, but the 95 corridor between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale is extremely congested. Pepole drive from south of Miami to the Ft. L/Hollywood Airport because it is less congested than MIami International, which is kind of a zoo. And FLL/Hwd is not a picnic either.

No doubt, winter weather around here stinks, and Florida weather especially in January and February makes us very jealous. But we find when visiting our daughter that if you get away from the coastal, upscale areas, there is a big drop-off. You find lots of strip malls selling guns and amno, pawn shops, tatoo parlors and cheap off brand cigarettes. Not sure a couple of old time original Brooklyn "kids" fit into that scene.

We will probably stay put, as we downsized from a larger classic but older home into a townhome where it is new and things on the outside are all done by the association. When we get even older, in the winters we will think about vacationing and visiting our daughter more and more to get out of the cold up north.

Our friends moved from N. Jersey to Jupiter and they love it and we chcked out DelRay and found that nice.

We vacationed on Sanibel and Captiva and liked it there, not so much Clearwater or Tampa when we checked those places out.

Since it is mid-February and this week is calling for multiple wintry mixes, I envy the Redmen dotcomers in the warm, sunny climate of Florida.
