Hi everyone,
Testing the waters here.  I’m an old schooler who has appreciated this board for many years and finally wish to join. My parents are SJU alums (class of ‘68) and I (born 1975) grew up with season tix every year and my heros were Chris, Walter, Mark and Malik.  I am a product of Bayside, Queens (St. Robert Bellarmine) and the CHSAA (Regis ‘93) and played against Shamgod Wells, Kareem Reid, Charles Jones (if you remember him - incredible) in high school yada yada and feel like I know all of you very well. Just want to start contributing.  My uncle Steve was actually looie’s eye doctor if you can believe that and knew the doctor who performed Shelton Jones’ cataract surgery in ‘87  so there is my bona fides :).

Welcome aboard Dave. I was also educated by the Jesuits, at Xavier. My daughter attended Loyola and she has lots of friends who attended Regis. Look forward to reading your posts moving forward.

Any relation to Dr. LoRe who was a GP in East New York in the 50's and 60's?

Wow! Great memory and small world. That was my grandfather, Alexander.  Ironically a Georgetown grad. That side of my family all originally settled in East New York once here from Sicily.  Most ended up at Brooklyn Prep and some combo of SJU and G'town.  I had some crazy times at the garden as a kid when the hoyas would come to town. How were you familiar with him?  Good stuff.

When I was born my parents lived on Highland Blvd. Also of Sicilian descent. St Malachi was my parish. Dr Izzo who was in East NY was our pediatrician. Dr Famuso(SIC?) was our family doctor.

My late mother was his patient for many years. He was a caring and lovely man.
My mom was Italian and lived two blocks from his office.

I have some long ago knowledge of my grandparents getting married at Our Lady of Lorretto (sp?).  I'll bet you everyone knew each other from the neighborhood.

Our Lady of  Loretto church was two blocks from Dr. LoRe's office on Hirkimer and Sackman Sts and has since been demolished. It was a beautiful church.

I think you are posting under the wrong topic Action.
Anyhoo,  Dr. LoRe's nephew was promoted after his one post and is no longer in the AAA league.
I should have mentioned my uncle laid bricks at Alimni Hall. Lol!!

You're Montez's nephew?

A warm welcome Dave from a fellow Regian, class of 1970. Sounds like we also grew up in the same neck of the woods as I am from St. Andrew Avellino parish in Flushing. Don't think I had any classmates from St. Roberts but had several from Blessed Sacrament in Bayside.

Mostly through our kids, we know lots of Regis grads.  They are all really smart, really good people, but we still secretly love to hate them, mostly out of jealousy.     Just kidding - almost unilaterally go on to extraordinary careers in all sorts of disciplines.  It is the jewel of NYC Catholic HS, and all free, thanks to donors.

St. Andrew Avellino is a prized parish in the Diocese.   Priests assigned there are usually highly regarded.   Aux Bishop Ray Chapetto is assigned there now, and Father Joe Holcombe was pastor there for a long time before or after he was the rector at the national cathedral in Washington DC.    I know all those parishes in Bayside because my kids played CYO basketball.   St. Roberts beat my daughter's team for the diocesan championship when she was a hs varsity player.   They had loaded up with ringers.   :)

I was married at St. Andrew Avellino in 1988. We left Flushing for New Jersey in 1995 and my older siblings had left many years before but my cousin/godmother lived most of her life there and knew Father Holcombe quite well. She passed away in February 2020 and we had to postpone her memorial Mass at St. Andrews until October 2021 by which time Father Holcombe had moved on and wasn't available to say the Mass. St. Andrews is still a beautiful church for sure. I have nothing but good memories growing up in Flushing. There's a group of four guys I've been friends with since 4th grade; we try to get together each year for a few beers in a NYC watering hole to reminisce about the good old days at St. Andrews.
