Felix' Role & "Small Ball"

Yikes, we now have posters who mention Dom and Charles Barkley in the same posts as Felix.

Come on, he clearly meant height with regard to Barkley. Not even the biggest homer in the world would compare any PF we've likely ever had to one of the greatest forwards in NBA history.

Pointer was not a power forward, neither will Balamou be one. As noted, the limited skills and big heart lend itself to playing close to the basket. Where should he be slotted, point guard? His playing time I am sure will be dictated by injuries, foul trouble, and occasionally a situational maneuver such as giving fouls, or giving someone a short breather, etc.

Felix plays bigger than his height. Honestly it's not even that big of a deal. The more useful and versatile a role player can be the better

Felix is one inch shorter than Dom and about the same physical package. We've seen him play pf before, its not like this is earth shattering and im sure he wont be getting mega minutes there.

For better or for worse Felix should average 15 minutes per game. He has the heart of a lion and superb athletic ability. He will be used out of necessity at the 4 and perhaps the 3 for defensive purposes. Hopefully we can all appreciate Felix for what he brings to the court and not focus on the player he will never be.

I see a role for him if we want to press, especially if we are losing and need to get back in the game. I could also see him helping to deny a bigger man the ball. He is a tough kid.

Look I hope Felix turns in to this year's version of Charles Minlend, Lamont Middleton or Anthony Glover, but I have never felt that he could contribute significant minutes at this level (sorry Marillac) and I still don't. Would love to be proven wrong though.

Have you forgotten "the truth"??/??? Certainly a better college player than Barkley. Granted he was forced to play center his Jr. year.

I love Felix but he's not close to the same physical package as Dom. At best as a senior he could be a decent role player for 5-10 mins per game but he should not be guarding power forwards.

Dom should have been Big East Player of the year. I have never seen Felix do what Dom did physically every game last year and in flashes throughout his 4 years.

I agree that if Felix is seeing a lot of minutes it probably means we're in for a long season. However, even though he's not the most skilled guy I always feel like he plays his ass off with the minutes he gets. I assume the same is true in practice. This is a young team with a slim chance of making the big tournament. Having a veteran with that work ethic is gonna be more valuable than anything Felix is capable of contributing skill wise. I guess my point is I don't mind if Felix is getting extra minutes if it's an active reminder to the young guys that effort = minutes.

Jeez, everyone relax. Jon Rothstein's tweet said nothing about Felix getting "significant minutes" or "a lot of minutes." Merely commented that the staff is "working on" -- not committed to, but working on -- using Felix as an undersized PF. Not the end of the world.

Exactly! Now is the time to be experimenting with different line-ups and players at different positions, it's the pre-season after all. Previous coach was still experimenting and changing line-ups in late February and that was with a 5 game summer tour.

I agree and I also didn't read it as meaning significant minutes. I just meant to say that I like Felix's work ethic and thought that was valuable. I certainly don't think it's a big deal or "the end of the world". Clearly Christian Jones' development is the much larger issue that we should all be freaking out about.

A couple nice clips of CO in there too

The fact that they are even "working on...", and find the need to issue a press statement about it, scares me. Guess I'm still having flashbacks of the prior staff and their experimentations.

I don't think they issued an unsolicited press statement. More like Rothstein asked them about Balamou's role this season, and that's the answer he got. Not enough to build an article around, so it became a tweet.

We have a short bench and he needs to play somewhere. Honestly, I'm most comfortable with him up there -- there are more opportunities for athletic mismatches at PF. SFs or SGs who can jump out of the gym and run like a deer are a dime a dozen. Let him try to work on a PF, especially if his man is 6'7" or smaller. This is all moot if Yakwe is eligible though.
