Felix Balamou Basketball Report Card

Obekpa package deal......lazy man's tactic.

It's not lazy at all. It's plain dumb not to do it. Lou C pulled in D. Russel along with his teammate. Besides, Felix was a good prospect on his own.

Sorry OLV, Iove Felix and he had some shinning moments here, but there is no way he is a D1 player on a decent team. Don't even remember him being ranked coming out of HS.

Sorry Monte, he was 3 star and Tom K touted his athleticism by writing that he "has more hops than Heineken". He was impressing people at IS 8.

He was a prospect with potential upside. Here is his bio:

Arrived in the U.S. in 2010 and played two seasons at Our Savior New American School in Centereach, Long Island, N.Y. ... scored 16.0 points per game as a senior to lead a team with eight NCAA Division I prospects ... also averaged 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals ... helped OSNA post a 25-5 record in 2011-12 ... named a Top 20 all-star at Hoop Group Elite camp in 2011 ... following in the footsteps of 2010 predecessor Maurice Harkless, he captured the MVP award at the Port Chester CYP in Port Chester, Pa., in March of 2011 .... earned second team All-IS8 honors after leading Our Savior New American to the Jamaica, Queens, tournament's semifinals in the fall of 2011 ... selected the game MVP for the PrimeTime Shootout in Roselle, N.J., in February of 2012 ...

Don't tell me, let me guess, that's his bio from the SJU site ? ;) The kid was a 2 star recruit on all but one sitee. You show me anywhere that he was ranked in the top 400 coming out of high school and I will admit I'm wrong. Much like AA, I don't think any other high D1 schools were even looking at him. Felix was not a D1 prospect(certainly not high D1) coming out of high school. Sorry OLV :)

I have no problem with that package deal. Sometimes you have to take a non/low D1 prospect to get a blue chip kid. The DLR brothers are whole other story.

Ha, good guess. I'm not sure why that matters unless you think they make the stuff up.

I've no interest or expectation of you admitting being wrong in stating that he was not a prospect for a decent D 1 team.

My recollection is that his athleticism made him a prospect with good upside, especially on the defensive end. His upside made it a potential package that was a no-brainer - although, for many months it looked like CO was not going to follow Felix here.

George Garrison started his sophomore year before eventually losing his position to Larry Washington who had to sit out the first semester as he transferred in mid year the previous season and had to sit out. Bob Kelly took over the role the following year after sitting out as a transfer. Garrison didn't get slot of time his last two seasons. He did play his entire four years here and graduated.

Thought we had agreement to never mention Bobby Kelly again. :)

Where were you when I was posting that there was a clamor for Larry Washington to start of Bobby Kelly? Thanks for the post. :)

At the Walk for the Cure in the Fall I chatted with Felix for a while. He is a friend of my buddy & was very cordial. He bore no ill will for Lavin, but did say he was disappointed with the redshirt experience, noting things did not turn out the way he had been told. He also noted in Lavin regime several guys (not hard to guess who)not only frequently missed practices, but were not penalized on those occasions. Felix further stated that treatment was very discouraging to players who were compliant.

He concluded by saying he kept in touch with Lavin, wished him well & all in all had a good relationship with him.

Just wanted to share something pertinent to the topic.

My take on Balamou is that his activation from redshirt had to do with Jordan's unpredictability and hiatus at the time.

Lavin year two, wheels fell off for Dunlap as Nurideen Lindsay didn't work out. Year 3, Harrison was suspended for last 7 games, ending any serious hope of an NCAA run. By year 4, had he suspended or chucked Jordan, the team would have seriously damaged NCAA chances, and he likely figured a third straight NCAA miss would be damaging for the program and his future. So he lived with Jordan, but sent him a message when he went home to Philly by activating Balamou and letting Jordan know they were ready to go on without him. Jordan came back, Balamou saw almost no court time. Lavin probably figured he was activating a guy who didn't figure to see very much court during his tenure at SJU.

Understand Balamou's disappointment, and Lavin probably fluffed up expectations for Felix when he activated him. He probably would have played more had Jordan not come back.

I don't understand fully how everyone suspects that Lavin's relationship with former players is phony, because it gives these kids zero credit for having the ability to determine whether the relationship with the guy who coached them for up to 4 years. It's almost an insult to them.

Quote training tomorrow my friend. Btw, I don't have Instagram & like to post info that hopefully posters find interesting. I am less apt to blow my own horn, get on a soap box and construct five paragraph posts. I suspect most guys on board prefer & appreciate my approach. If you desire further clarity perhaps PM area is better suited for that. Have a god one.

see I disagree on this.Im very cool with oackage deals to get a real good player. It was worth the shot. Felix was a great kid and in no way embarrassed the team or the school. He was an end of the bench player on a good team,

I'd be more than happy for Mullin or Matt A to create some package deals in the future

Larry Brown and Cal took guys Dad's as part of package deal. Tark has his assistant adopt Lloyd Daniels. People have done much worse packages

Ah, Nurideen Lindsay. Had forgotten about that train wreck.

It's not lazy at all. It's plain dumb not to do it. Lou C pulled in D. Russel along with his teammate. Besides, Felix was a good prospect on his own.

Thanks for the specifics. Rather than speaking from my recollections I was speaking more from the recurring nightmares of anytime GG saw playing time. :)
