Fanning The Flames: Syracuse - St. John's Game

Not that anyone here needs a reminder as to why we should circle the Syracuse game on our calendar this year, below is a comment that was posted on their board regarding this game:

"chris mullin is not walking through that door. mark jackson is not walking through that door. walter berry is not walking through that door.
but guess what. cj fair and jeremi grant and tyler roberson and tyler ennis will be walking through the garden doors on dec 15. as well as cuse nation to take over the garden like we always do and embarass you like we always do. have fun seeing your home arena dominated by loud drunk orange people AGAIN"

Just remember guys...we demolished Duke, Nova, and UConn and took down Pitt in 2011. Anything can happen. Remember when we almost beat Duke with our Fresh 5 Moe dropping 31? We came within 7 points. It's hard to keep winning streaks...especially a 7 year streak against one team. We are bound to beat em and rather than hope to get lucky in years past, if we just play to our talent level we can win this time.

P.S. I will be at the game with my friend who is a Cuse fan. The last one I was at I was the only SJU fan within about 10 rows. They do their stupid stand and applaud thing until the first basket and totally block you from seeing the game. If anyone remembers the last time we played Cuse at the Garden, it took Cuse a LONG time to get their first points so it was even more annoying.

Excellent point, although SU gave us a beatdown that year during the regular season. :furious:

Yes they did...believe me I heard about it all night from my friend lol. Harrison was an absolute beast that game though...I remember every 3 he threw up was dropping but we were still way down by that point so it kind of ruined it. Hopefully the freshman version of his 3 pt shot is back and dare I say better? We have a real chance against Cuse this year...a blowout may very well still happen, but it will not be expected this time like in years past.

The SJU poster was not inflammatory. I do believe we are just as athletic as they are, like he says. But, they do have a tremendous amount of talent, like the SU board says and will be favored. I would love to beat them and shut them up.

This can easily be avoided - SJU Fans have first rights to buy tickets before tickets go on sale to the general public.

If you are a season ticket holder buy extra tickets to that game (Which you can do before they go on sale) and bring friends.

If you claim to be a fan and you can't make it to this game then you should root for a different team.

Two years ago half my section sold their tickets on stubhub to Syracuse fans, Let's just say I am not too friendly with them to this day.

They don't call him Bucknice 23 ;)

Are you sure about that, I was under the impression that you could only buy "season ticket packages" before individual games go on sale to the general public. If that's the case then we would have to buy multiple season ticket packages just to get extra tickets to the Cuse game. I hope I am wrong b/c if so, what you suggest makes perfect sense.

I will be there screaming my lungs out about Bernie Fine and how Boeheim is worse than Joe Paterno. As I was two years ago, win or lose.

For what it's worth, the Syracuse fans are already lining up for tix. Some have already started looking at StubHub, or have already gone to Redstormsports.com. We need to really be on top of this. Below are some of the comments that they are posting on their site regarding tickets.

"According to Stubhub, only 64 tickets left, and you cant get into the door for less than $395... I realize its MSG, but is that normal? "

"Not normal. I didn't have that problem with Temple last year but then again, Johnnies would draw a bigger NY crowd. "

"I went to the Johnnies website, it still says tickets "coming soon".. I'll wait it out. I believe the wife has a cousin that still goes to St Johns. Might be time to pull the favorite cousin card! lol "

I totally agree our fanbase leaves MUCH to be desired in terms of team spirit and attendance turnout, but doesn't Cuse have like 10,000 more students than us? They are a HUGE football school. They are always going to drown us out no matter how good we are IMO.

Total SU undergraduates - 14, 798
Total SJU undergraduates 15, 720

Syracuse is like UConn & Kentucky, they have many more fans who are just from the area but didn't go to the school b/c they associate with them as a pro team b/c they are the only show in town.

If this was the mid 80's St John's could outdraw them. New Yorker's are not passionate about St John's. Please beat Syracuse for the fans that do turn out.

If you have a season ticket package they will allow you to purchase additional tickets before they go on sale. I already purchased 5 additional tickets and I am bringing friends to the game to keep the Orange out.

And that's another reason we won't ever outdraw them unless we are a Final Four team. Cuse is a pro team for upstate NY. The Bills never took off...it's just them. They have decades upon decades of being in the top 25, final fours, elite 8's, a championship, and there are tons of bandwagon fans who have zero connection to Cuse or upstate NY as a result. We only have our most diehard fans because we have not been successful practically at all in the past few decades. The NYC area is also about what have you done for me lately, so tradition doesn't mean as much here. It's win or you won't get the fans.

So seeing as though tradition doesn't mean much, all we have to do is win and they will come.

What have you done for me lately, right?

We have to build a consistent winner. Not just one year, it takes time to get the culture back to something to be proud of. For example, if Lavin sticks around and he takes us to the tourney 8 out of the next 10 years constantly on the top 25 and making deep runs i.e. Sweet 16 or better, then yes the crowds will absolutely be there. Cuse has the benefit of a long tradition of winning and being essentially a pro team. We have the Knicks and Nets.
