Fan interest-game attendance

Brian W,

Great point re: the Mike Jarvis hex, the last time we sold out a November/December non conference CA game was back in 2001, nearly 13 years.

Each year we fail to make the ncaa we continue to lose younger fans, media attention etc. We are an aging fan base with diminishing returns.

Thanks,

The Cubs still draw well & up until they finally broke the hex, so did the Boston Red Sox. :silly:

I first went to Fenway in 1992, and the game I was at had plenty of extra seats, for a Sunday afternoon vs. the "bash brother" Oakland A's. In fact, we walked up to the box office and bought tickets that day. The Red Sox didn't really start selling out every night until Pedro got there. Everyone started buying seats in advance, hoping for a Pedro game.

The Cubs defy logic. They and the Marlins are baseball's exceptions to the "only winning will bring in the fans" rule (in opposite directions, ironically... The Marlins don't draw flies now, and didn't when they won 2 world championships, either).

Even the Rays have picked up the attendance somewhat in recent years (but there are far too many east coast transplants down there for them to ever build a great fanbase).

There are many solutions to the problem but the easiest soluton is simply "Win Baby" Winning will put people in the seats and be spread by word of mouth. I also feel the school needs to come to the realization that and seat sold for $5 reaps more than a seat that goes empty. Basketball is one of the most popular sports for kids. Why not sell seats 1 week before the game for $5 for all youth teams...target the CYO of Nassau/Suffolk/Queens/Bronx/Brooklyn. Offer seats to local youth AAU teams from the City and Long Island. That is how you capture a future fan. Offering CYO teams to play at halftime is a great idea but it is expensive. +/- $1000 for two teams to play 10 minuites at halftime.

Schedule BETTER games at the school. Wagner,Bucknell,Monmouth and the ever populat Longwood doesn't draw interest. I have season tickets and still dont go some times if I need to fight traffic that day.

As far as energy is concerned I have said this numerous times....our fans have ZERO energy at Carnasecca. At times it is almost embarassing to cheer out loud (I love to cheer). I go to MOST games.... If it wasn't for the student section (who were awsome this year)...it would be pathetic. The people in the lower section sit..and stand only to pee or in the last minutes of a game. I hear all the complaints saying why cheer for a bad team....loosing record....remember 1984..LOuie..LOuie...Louie...blah blah. Bottom line is if your not cheering...u are probly complaining or Moaning (I hear a lot of that also)

Anl lastly.....the complainers on this Board do NOTHING to help the cause. I read this board daily and for the last 3 months it has been almost un-readable. The same people saying the same thing.....complaing ,complaining, complaing. It gets to a point where somone with a 'Positive attitude toward the program" is afraid to post. Folks I would love to win the National Championship but the odds of that are slim. Its 30 YEARS since we were in the final four and since then the college landscape has tilted away from programs like ours ever getting there again. Believe it or not some fans who might fill some of those empty seats may be reading this board. If you were them would you go to our games?

What I am saying is enjoy the sport. Enjoy the kids. Enjoy the journey. We have tuff time and good times. Stop tring to be the solution. The kids and coaches are the solution to the problem. Suppoert them in a positve way....and stop ripping them apart if they make a mistake, decide to transfer or even go pro in an attempt to make their dream a reality.

OK I am done....whew....see u in 6 months.

Excellent post and not to beat a dead horse but the other day I was bored to death with the fire Lavin posts so I looked at the other forums and the first two posts I read were calling for the firing of the soccer coach.

Make tickets free for students put it in the activity fee, when the team is good you will have kids waiting outside "the Lou" dying for tickets. Also do more corporate functions. Being in the capital for media and business we have an advantage. How many banks are in this city? Three corporate/caterer mixers at one game should be more than possible. When you have mediocre product you have be creative.
