Just an exhibition game, but a lot of good takeaways.

CMA is going to have a good 10 man rotation to work with once Wusu gets back.  Wheeler is going to probably be the 6th man this year, playing a lot of minutes at both 4 and 5 spot, looks like CMA really likes him to be the head of the full court press. He'll be what Moore was last year minus the drama and being better defensively.

What's going to be interesting is to see how the guard minutes gets distributed.  Coburn, Wusu, and Pinzon are all going to make a case for heavy minutes off the bench.  I could see all the guards minus Posh playing around the same amount of minutes with all of them averaging around 17-20 MPG.

Announcers mentioned Driss redshirting and Nywie looks raw I don't see him playing much unless the other bigs get in foul trouble.

BTW, Nywie had eight rebounds in about 15 minutes.  That'll make it hard to keep him on the bench.  I'm totally pleased with Pinzon and Soriano's play.  I'm singling them out because I never saw them before...and we're not used to pleasant surprises.  Champagnie proved why he's an All-American...Posh picked up from last year with his outstanding and heady play.  Everyone contributed.  I guess they were relaxed...12-20 at the free throw line...and a crapload of missed chippies in the first half.

I know it's Baruch...but I'm ready to get on one of those betting sites to put down some money that we'll get a nice seed in the dance.

You do realize their center was 6'4 right?  And most of his minutes came at the later end of the 2nd half when Baruch coach was playing his 14th, 15th, and 16th person on the bench.  And he scored 3 points, 1 more point than the walk-ons.  He fumbled a lot of balls.  I don't think that really screams a guy that's going to be hard to keep off the court.

And not trying to knock Nyiwe at all, I just think when you watch Stanley, Soriano, and Wheeler, they all appeared to be way ahead of him in terms of their talent level, which is a good thing IMO, means the staff went and upgraded.

Of course, Nyiwe played against shorter players.  So did the other bigs.  I'm pointing out something you obviously know...that rebounding is an effort stat.  Nyiwe had the second most boards on the team last night.  We have the luxury of having some really good bigs.  Nyiwe is making a point that he won't be denied.  That's my take.

Posh was perfectly content with dishing out assists, which is a beautiful thing.

To newer readers on Redmen.com; Newsman13 was a one time frequent poster on this site who raised the level and quality of discussion.  I did not always agree with his point of view but he was undoubtedly an asset to the site.

My message to Newsman13::

Hey Newzie ..... don't be a stranger.  Please post more often.  Best regards.

It wasn’t even hot In Carnesecca! Not getting the Nyiwe stuff, it’s hard to evaluate against Baruch but I certainly didn’t see anything to indicate he will end up in the rotation. To say it in a positive way - I thought Stanley looked much better. But way too early for me to really say too, I wouldn’t even comment on him but I’m surprised anyone saw him last night and was impressed.

But also it’s not like he should be needed, either. Too early on everyone else as well but other than Nyiwe there were positive signs for every player.

Baruch ain't Kansas

The new guys all have game.

The Villanovas and Providences of the world won't push around with some legitimate size inside.

Figuring out the guard minutes is going to be a tough job, but a good problem. (No in-season transfers, right, we haven't gone that far have we?)

Wasn't hot in CA, MJMJr should have gone to the game.

Serve beer now?

Very optimistic for the upcoming season.

Posh, who wouldn't want to play with him, unselfish, seems extremely happy to set guys up for good looking shots.

I wouldn't want to be Gillepsie trying to bring the ball up the Court against this group, ball hounds. I see Nova setting lots of backcourt picks to help out ol Colin.

Why isn't URI an Exhibition and not a CIA protected scrimmage?

Tarik Turner, said "us" or "We" and corrected himself, but he said he told Iron Mike to sign Coburn, called him a great addition, and Mike did just that.

A few observations from attending the game
  1. I was in the very small percentage of attendees wearing a mask throughout the game. For those on the fence about whether to attend, this may or may not be a consideration.
  2. Baruch is so much smaller and less athletic, that drawing many conclusions from this resounding victory is difficult.
  3. Posh Alexander looked like he was in even better shape than last year and played a great game. He's the only point guard on the roster, but that's fine barring an injury.
  4. Julian looked super comfortable out there as well, which you'd assume to be the case as an All-American caliber player going up against a D3 team, but is a good sign coming off a minor injury.
  5. I thought Joel looked to be in good shape. At least in bursts of a few minutes at a time, he runs the floor quite well.
  6. Nyiwe doesn't look like someone capable of being a major contributor at the Big East level this season - just seemed a bit slow and uncoordinated and unsure of himself - especially on the offensive end.
  7. Mathis looks like someone who should be a much better fit in this system than at Rutgers.
  8. Pinzon looks really tall for a guard in person.
  9. I loved Stanley's energy and effort in this game.

Posh really played like a pass first point guard, getting some easy baskets for the newcomers who must be pleased to play with him.  Smith must have been impacted by Posh in his ball distribution so maybe he can help as backup PG.  Doctor C lived up to his shooting rep but showed some nice defensive sense with a nose for the ball.  Montaz had strong game with respect to his defense and taking only 1 shot from 3--hopefully he keeps up that as an average # of 3's/game.  Ditto Wheeler who very efficient in PPM.

The transfer portal guys all seem like good fits to CMA's style of play.

PS--does anyone know who the super secret, hush hush opponent in Sunday's closed door scrimmage will be?

URI, no?

Yes

One play I really liked:

STJ on D.
Baruch player drives the lane out of control and kicks out to a shooter on the wing.
Mathis reads it perfectly and gets in the passing lane for a steal
Posh starts jetting to the other end.
And Mathis immediately spots him, takes one dribble for momentum and throws the perfect 2/3rds court pass to a streaking Posh for an easy two.

I know it won't be as easy against BE comp, but just to see this instinct is a great indication of how Mathis gets the CMA system and will likely continue to get major minutes.

Mathis may not be a dead eye shooter, but as noted by Main Man, brings intangibles to the table defensively.  His instincts in passing lane and generation of deflections are tailor made for this group and not only will break opponents rhythm,  but potentially generate a lot of easy buckets for a very quick group.

Opposition aside, this is a very deep, talented group who should have a very successful season. If no prolonged injuries of consequence, Dance card and a little fun there seems quite possible. Have not felt this way in years.

My thoughts from attending yesterday:

1. Obviously this is Baruch, tallest player was 6'6 and they are a D3 school full of accountants. So it was never about the score. To me I wanted to see what rotations were being tested, how the new pieces "bought in", and first impressions on the transfers.
2. Montez Mathis is going to cause problems for other teams. He is a bigger version of Posh, he was in the mud and causing turnovers. He's also a good finisher at the rim. I don't think I expect him to shoot or really score a ton, but he will impact the game and paired with Posh it's going to be effective.
3. Omar Stanley is going to be a fan favorite. His hands are massive, he plays aggressive and with has a ton of energy. I'd expect to see him as one of the first off the bench to spell Soriano or Wheeler.
4. Julian is Julian. But his game (maybe after 18 months away from in person viewing) looks to have become more polished. Heck, even from last year, what I saw from the 2nd row yesterday was silk. It looked effortless. Nothing was forced. Nothing looked laborious, he was gliding. I know it may seem like hyperbole, but I'm telling you I haven't seen a player in an SJU jersey move that effectively and score looking how he looked in 15 years of being on campus at games.
5. Tareq Coburn is a player. If he wasn't interested in the PA program I think he'd be at a really big program as a transfer. He can slash, hit the 3, and finish.
6. Having Joel Soriano is going to be the biggest difference in this team from Anderson's first two. Now that might sound obvious but the difference having someone 6'11 who clogs up the paint, who can be there for offensive boards, who can finish around the rim, my god we haven't had that in forever. Him and Wheeler need to hit the charity stripe and shoot it 1000 times a day.
7. Stef Smith feels like the team captain. He's so vocal on the court, he really set a nice tone.
8. It was Baruch so less than a grain of salt will be taken from this, but it was just great to be back and see this team. I have very high hopes.
9. Yes it was hot as all hell inside Carnesecca.

Have to agree with the comments about JC.  Last forward that I can compare him to with regard to effortless game would be Malik Sealy.  Silky smooth 22/7 guy his upperclassmen years and an improving NBA player when his life was ended far too soon.  But JC has the range on Malik, who was a 30% shooter from 3 in college and the pros.  But I reckon he was 70% on the mid range baseline jumper.  ;)

FROM WHAT I SAW FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS, BARUCH IS NOT EVEN WAGNER...REMINDS ME OF G-TOWN VS ST LEOS..  JUST REMEMBER INCARNATE WORD..THINK URI SCRIMMAGE IS MORE RELIABLE..

Definitely agree we can't judge the competition with them being D3. If I heard correctly the Baruch only practiced together for the first time in mid-October ? COVID/CUNY rules perhaps ?

Best part was watching how they interacted and played as a unit.   All good observations above.  Soriano still is the one I'm most skeptical about, but I was a bit more encouraged than I was prior to yesterday.

Think we turned ball over 18 times... Hopefully that's the worst for the season.

Since I don't really have the insight to glean much from these exhibition games against far inferior opponents, I don't waste my time watching.  But based on what I'm reading here, I haven't been this excited after a preseason exhibition game since we clobbered Marathon Oil at the start of the 99' season. Go Johnnies!!!

Here's my takeaway from the game:
For the first time in decades, I didn't come away from a cupcake scrimmage or early season warm up with any concerns based on our underperforming against an inferior team.  Everyone looked as good as expected, or better.

I honesty cannot recall the last time that happened.

Agree with all the positives and especially agree with tempering enthusiasm due to the opponent.

I will say, despite adding a lot of size, I think this team will still need to work at rebounding.  Aaron Wheeler is not going to play like a traditional PF and Soriano will only have so many minutes in him.  In my opinion Nywie is not BE ready and as excited as I am about Stanley, he is a freshman who has only played against Baruch College.

Not trying to throw water on the optimism.  I am more pumped for the season than I have been in a long time.  I also still think we can be a good rebounding team.  Just think we'll need to "get after it" on the boards.

Interesting take JF. I always enjoy reading your posts and usually agree with them. One game, especially against Baruch, doesn't tell us much, but I have a different take based as much on our new personnel as last night's game.
I think we will be a much better team in three respects: rebounding, shooting and depth. The depth speaks for itself. While guys like Smith & Coburn can really shoot it, it helps so much to have guys like Wheeler & Soriano who can hit midrange shots, As for rebounding, while Wheeler may play more like a stretch 4 or wing than a traditional power forward, Champ plays more like a stretch 4 than a wing and is an excellent rebounder and both Mathis & Coburn are very good rebounding guards.
To me question marks are taking care of the ball and defense. Baruch got lots of good looks last night, just weren't good enough to take advantage. Haven't seen enough of Pinzon, Smith & Soriano to be confident they can be competent BE defenders this year. Having said all that, very optimistic we will be good, only question is how good.
