(EXHIBITION) (POST-GAME) Baruch, Wed. Oct. 27, 7pm, ESPN-3

Shouldn’t change a thing from tonight’s game.

if it ain’t Baruch don’t fix it.

Just an exhibition game, but a lot of good takeaways.

CMA is going to have a good 10 man rotation to work with once Wusu gets back.  Wheeler is going to probably be the 6th man this year, playing a lot of minutes at both 4 and 5 spot, looks like CMA really likes him to be the head of the full court press. He'll be what Moore was last year minus the drama and being better defensively.

What's going to be interesting is to see how the guard minutes gets distributed.  Coburn, Wusu, and Pinzon are all going to make a case for heavy minutes off the bench.  I could see all the guards minus Posh playing around the same amount of minutes with all of them averaging around 17-20 MPG.

Announcers mentioned Driss redshirting and Nywie looks raw I don't see him playing much unless the other bigs get in foul trouble.

Zach B

St. John's beat Baruch, 107-43. Julian Champagnie had 19 points and 13 rebounds. Joel Soriano had 17. Tareq Coburn and Aaron Wheeler each with 11. Up next is URI closed-door scrimmage on Sunday. #sjubb

While it's hard to evaluate our team based on tonight's game, it appears that we are more athletic, have more guys that can shoot, have more size and more depth than we had last year.

Looking forward to what should be an exciting season

Need to start the '21-'22 Tarik Turner counter for using the word "versatility"....

It might have been more than the 107 pts SJU scored,

Really felt good to be back on campus.

Agree with most of observations thus far.  While can’t draw many conclusions, some observations:

Great to have some size for first time in lonnnnng time.  Soriano and Wheeler looked good.

Team very athletic abs deep.

Posh very buff.

More scoring options.

Young guys look high bb iq and smooth.

May not be enough minutes to go around.

Bonus observation:   Unusually large dance team

Going to be a fun year so long as we stay healthy. We will truly be 10 deep and wear a lot of opponents down. No obvious weakness in this bunch.

BTW, Nywie had eight rebounds in about 15 minutes.  That'll make it hard to keep him on the bench.  I'm totally pleased with Pinzon and Soriano's play.  I'm singling them out because I never saw them before...and we're not used to pleasant surprises.  Champagnie proved why he's an All-American...Posh picked up from last year with his outstanding and heady play.  Everyone contributed.  I guess they were relaxed...12-20 at the free throw line...and a crapload of missed chippies in the first half.

I know it's Baruch...but I'm ready to get on one of those betting sites to put down some money that we'll get a nice seed in the dance.

We have Indiana coming up in like 3 weeks.  Gotta get up to speed fast as possible.  Agree with you about Nywie. He’s a sleeper with big upside.

107 points, and I don't even think the halfcourt offense is in synch yet.  They were passing a lot (sometimes too much, IMO), but at times, it seemed like they were passing the ball, for the sake of showing coach that they can be unselfish.  It wasn't done with purpose, or aggressiveness, at least early in the game.  That will come, though.

The defense was great.  Baruch was a part of that obviously, but everyone seemed to know where they were supposed to be at all times.  Mathis especially, seems to be a good fit for this defensive system.

We are definitely much bigger then in the past, though Wheeler and Soriano could do anything they wanted to against this team.  I was actually impressed that we have bigger guards like Pinzon, Mathis, and Coburn, that can all handle the ball, and pass well.  Even Smith looked pretty good doing it, but that could have been the competition.  It's Posh's ball, no question, but it will be nice to take some of the pressure off of him once in awhile.

I know this was against an overmatched opponent, but I don't think any one of the players gave us a bad performance tonight.  It was good to see.

You do realize their center was 6'4 right?  And most of his minutes came at the later end of the 2nd half when Baruch coach was playing his 14th, 15th, and 16th person on the bench.  And he scored 3 points, 1 more point than the walk-ons.  He fumbled a lot of balls.  I don't think that really screams a guy that's going to be hard to keep off the court.

And not trying to knock Nyiwe at all, I just think when you watch Stanley, Soriano, and Wheeler, they all appeared to be way ahead of him in terms of their talent level, which is a good thing IMO, means the staff went and upgraded.

Look it was Baruch so take everything with a grain of salt.

These are some positive impressions that will hopefully stay the same no matter who the opponent is:

Wheeler is the best athlete on the team. His footwork on D was excellent. His speed and coordination is amazing. And his length and jumping ability are off the charts.

Mathis was excellent on the press. Very good footwork on D. Caught the ball well.

Soriano appears to have good hands. He caught every pass in the post. He didn't get gassed running with the boys.

Pinzon showed very good ball IQ.

Stanley is very active in a good way. Seems to be fine with being on the interior.

Posh looked to pass a lot more than score tonight - always a positive imho.

Julian looked smooth although you could tell he's still getting his feet under him since a few jumpers barely scraped the front of the iron.

That's what I noticed as well, he was a problem when he was at the front of the break.  He legit can guard positions 1-5.  I think he's going to thrive in CMA's system.  Every time CMA talks about him he makes sure to mention he recruited him before and really wanted him at Arkansas.

Posh really played like a pass first point guard, getting some easy baskets for the newcomers who must be pleased to play with him.  Smith must have been impacted by Posh in his ball distribution so maybe he can help as backup PG.  Doctor C lived up to his shooting rep but showed some nice defensive sense with a nose for the ball.  Montaz had strong game with respect to his defense and taking only 1 shot from 3--hopefully he keeps up that as an average # of 3's/game.  Ditto Wheeler who very efficient in PPM.

The transfer portal guys all seem like good fits to CMA's style of play.

PS--does anyone know who the super secret, hush hush opponent in Sunday's closed door scrimmage will be?

URI, no?

Just finished watching a replay. So hard to draw conclusions when the team was so physically superior in every way to Baruch.

I will say that our backcourt defense is going to drive the opposition nuts. Posh, Smith, Mathis and Coburn were all over the place. Add in Wusu who didn’t play (minor ankle) and wow. They will create turnovers and chaos on the floor. I just hope they can adjust the pace when needed. Fouls may be an issue but relentless is a word I can see.

Pinzon is very interesting. He is a stabilizing player with a nice stroke. Soriano has a decent touch.Put the ball low a couple of times but they can clean that up. Wheeler is long and he got more comfortable as the game went on. The sneaky good player in my opinion is Stanley. I was very surprised. Not a lot said about him but he hustles and was aggressive around the basket.

It is gonna be really interesting to see how the minute battles shake out during the year. Seems safe to say we can go back to penciling in champ as a the 4. With Wusu back I think that makes even more sense playing to our strengths in the backcourt.

The two “competitions” I’m looking forward to most are  Wheeler and Stanley in the front court and Mathis and Coburn in the backcourt.

Wheeler brings some perimeter skills and height but Stanley may be a better bet to bang inside. I love his energy. Both played well last night.

Mathis could really shine on defense and in transition while Coburn's skill on the offensive end may be invaluable against better defensive teams.

I think Soriano, because of his size, and Smith because of his ball handling, are more likely to have definitive roles but who knows. Would imagine that just like last year we will lead the league in bench production.

One thing that the competition shouldn’t effect; free throws.
The good: Soriano + Stanley = 7/9
The bad: Wheeler + Mathis = 0/5
