Ewing (or Obekpa) Theory Alert?

Throughout the season at times, and specifically in a couple of our blow out losses, people have lamented that when Obekpa is on the court we are playing 4 on 5 on offense (and depending who else is on the court, sometimes 3 on 5).

He is excellent defensively, but is there any chance that the smaller lineup, or simply getting amar in there on offense is going to spread it out a bit, and perhaps our O will look like a well oiled machine which will more than make up for the D/rebounding we are losing?

The basketball traditionalist in me says NO...but the fan in me that sees our terrible cold stretches with no flow and lineups that simply drag on offense says maybe...

I think some combination of JDR, Amar, and playing the 4 scholarship seniors and Rysheed could work (at least in round 1), and maybe even beyond...

We were already terrible on the glass...perhaps with obekpa out, other guys try a little harder, and the losses rebounding arent as great...biggest problem will be interior defense, rather than rebounding, and against SDSU perhaps a packed in zone can do significant damage...

Not for nothing, if I'm San Diego States coach, I will just watch the Nova game for an overall strategy. If I'm Lavin, I just assume they will go right for the paint every time. The real question, outside of us shooting lights out that game for a win, what can be done otherwise? We just don't have a bench, which is the biggest problem with this staff from day one, with or without CO.

Too bad San Diego State doesn't have Villanova's personnel. If I was Lavin, then I'd mainly go zone and occasionally, sagging man (just to give a different look from time to time and put us in good, rebounding position, as well).

Agree. We generate so much offense off steals, deflections, so zone allows for more cheating in passing lanes. On offense, stating the obvious, Jordan, Dee & fellow guards play well, we win. Off, it will be a long night.

the first quote from one of the analysts on the CBS Selection Sunday show was that SDSU would kill us of the boards without C.O. A zone will only hurt our rebounding. Got to steal minutes out of JDR and Amir. that's 10 fouls to give on a team that struggles from the line. The stats show they also are at a low % from 3. This is a winnable game, but we would have been much better at full strength.

I think Amar is terrible playing in the 5 hole. He is totally out of his position there. He is better away from the basket.

Who do you think will get most of COs minutes?

Where does Ewing fit into this analysis??

CO mostly coming off his man blocks shots down low, PERIOD, otherwise he is not much of a presence, am I wrong??

Bill Simmons had a "Ewing Theory" re: the Knicks '99 run about how certain star players when removed from teams can actually have a positive effect (simplifying it significantly). It applies more to guys who demand the ball a lot, so not really analogous to our situation if we somehow do really well, but similar principles apply.

Funny, because I feel the opposite. I like him on offense cutting into the paint for the quick layup. I don't think I've seen him make a J outside the paint yet this whole season.

I think a lot of eyes are going to be opened up to Amar's game on Friday...said with fingers crossed.

Yes, most likely in ways to exploit it.

There's that "The Sky Is Falling" mentality that I love from the grumpiest, most crotchety fan base in the Nation!

If I wasn't a pessimist, I wouldn't be pleasantly surprised by Amar's 20/10 performance on Friday.

Looking at you next Jahlil....

The key to the game for us to negate their rebounding advantage is to make our shots.

That's my bud light key to the game for you :)

If we win Friday you may need a few Bud Lights to get through the Duke rematch!

Yeah if we get through to sunday then the sunday game my fiancee will be driving the rental car :)

Statistically, Amar, Balamou, Jones and JDR are just about equal in terms of asset/liability. Amar has a nice "looking" stroke but is shooting 25% from 3 (6 for 24) and only 1 for 7 from the FT line. (same as JDR from the Line who does NOT have a nice looking stroke)
Amar is shooting 53% inside
Balamou: 31% inside
Jones: 59% inside
JDR: 40% inside

overall Amar is the best rebounder of this group; has the best A/TO and adds some steals and blocks. Of this group Felix has the greatest amount of liability - statistically between his low FG% and his turnovers.

If day one is this year you are correct.
