ESPNNY Makes Blurb On Attendance Yesterday

we need more sleeveless guys lol. In the original drawings of the renovations. the bleachers behind the baskets were supposed to be closer to the ground. but i bet the school made them what they are today to avoid students storming the court. i always wanted the student section on the side but it has fallen on deaf ears.

Speaking of storming the court. Does MSG allow it? I know in theory no one "allows" it, but does security really try to hold students back? I ask this because I remember Seton Hall students last year trying to storm the court and security was very aggressive and kept them back. By the way, remember Fordham students storming the court when they beat us? I don't even think we were ranked lol.

not at all. the msg guards are brutal. i remember some kid being tackled and another being choked when we beat duke 2 years ago.

Yeah, Duke game two years ago was a complete disaster. Im sure you could maybe find the thread in the archives somewhere.

We never play any opponents at CA to ever warrant a storming.

well not this year. but back in 2004-2005 boston college was undefeated and and played at carnesecca arena. at that point norm was coaching and st john's lost naturally.

seeing a lot of the crowd is king of like watching world war 2 events. The participants get smaller and smaller because our crowd is literally dying off. we need to get news fans there

I think it's dumb that you can't storm the court. I understand the possible litigation against MSG god forbid someone got trampled or something, but isn't there a way MSG can have some fine print on their tickets saying "In the event of court storming we are not liable for any injuries"? Everything that's fun is illegal.

I have to agree, was not expecting a sellout given the start time but I thought we would have a better crowd given that it was the season opener, a nationally televised game, a team that was (and may be in the tournament again this year) & Lavin's return to full time coaching for us.

that game should have been packed with students period
they just dont get it??? to make it cheap for them to afford $5 ticket & fill the arena duh its on tv another embarassing market move by moanasch on campus 1/2 empty arena for home opener just freakin clueless fire the tanman

Why not get vitamin water to sponsor a cap giveaway or something to fill the gym

Even the most loyal fans can't make it to a 2 PM game. Terrible planning. Classes are not like jobs where you can take a day off. If you have class and take school seriously, you don't skip it to go to a game. From what I saw the student sections looked pretty damn full for a 2 PM tipoff. Start making these games 7 PM on a Friday or Saturday and you will see a lot more support. Also like I said before...we are a COMMUTER school. I am a commuter myself...you get your crap done in the classroom and go home to LI, Westchester, Brooklyn, Queens, whatever. SJ is not some small school where there is a ton of pride and everyone grows to love the school and dorm there. It's a big, scattered school and so is its population. You lose the connection to your school if you commute. When I was at Marist (only 5,000 students), I lived there and it was a very close-knit community that seemed to value the same things. The games were sold out even for women's basketball games (the best sport at the school). Being separated from your school just does something to you psychologically. Don't forget there are TONS of international students who don't really care about basketball or at least don't make it a priority. There are lots of factors.

I was a student that commutered but still made the games as a student season tic holder stuck in the nose bleeds in the 80s before they created that great student section but the team had a hof coach & was ranked top 20
Are the players connecting at all with the fellow students thru rallys or partys ??
where r the kids from the new dorms & housing along un tpk????
most colleges have home opener rallys to invoke school spirit on the new season
Its usally set up by the cheerleaders when i was in school
The foriegn kids not caring is their lost experience & very sad
gantrys had partys all the time for the bb team mullin & wennington were usally there for free beer & the babes
Back in 80s games at the garden everyone met at all u can eat shrinp/salad & drink beer at Beefsteak charlies & after was McCanns pub but the drinking age was 18 same as the vote & go to war until stupid coumo change that to 21 & put alot of bars out of business

I can't speak too much about the specifics you just asked since I primarily attend the Oakdale campus since I'm a grad student and live about 40 miles east of the Queens campus. I still go to the Queens campus for some classes that aren't offered in Oakdale though. I doubt the players throw "parties" with average Joe's coming to hang out with them. Even at Marist where the basketball team was terrible, the players would still be very cliquey. Basketball guys hung out with basketball guys...that's just how it was. Now as for SJ players, I would think they would only be more cliquey given their high status as Big East players, especially knowing some of them may end up in the NBA. I saw Max Hooper, Orlando Sanchez, and Jamal Branch on campus before but I didn't want to bother them or anything. I didn't see them going up to random people either...it looks like they kind of chill amongst themselves. So I think there's more of a disconnect there than when you attended SJ and things weren't so materialistic and money/power driven.

And yes, I think the 21 age requirement is stupid. You can't even drink on campus until your Junior year (for me, late in my JR year). Luckily I had a fake though...kids still get around it. Our team needs to start being ranked and consistent if they want to capture the hearts and minds of the entire school. For me, I've grown up in an era where SJ was a bottom feeder in the Big East. I didn't even really start following them until maybe 2003 or 2004, not in depth just a light interest. If we had the team you guys had in the 80's actually being a dominant team that can make final four's and win Big East tourney's, no doubt the games would be sold out.
