ESPNNY Makes Blurb On Attendance Yesterday

I thought the crowd was decent for a Tuesday afternoon. Crowd was also very loud for the size and really got into the game. Again, most people are working or in class on Tuesday afternoon. I watched the Kansas vs MSU game on tv last night and the crowd was small and dead from what I could gather, and that was at prime time.

MCNPA....I agree with you there, even though crowd was small, there was energy & buzz & it was loud

Watched from a friend's apartment. Ended class at about 1:45 and jetted to a friend's apartment. Going to school Manhattan (and living there also) makes CA games really hard for me. It looked small, and I was upset only bc I have to deal with the incessant Cuse fans texting me asking why our gym is empty. But, 1) it was def loud, you could tell from just watching on tv. 2) This is NY, people actually work and go to school! SJU plays in a city where there are 10000 distractions + people actually having careers and school. Couple that with CA being in Jamaica, Queens, when most people work in Manhattan, makes it tough for weekday games there at any time. My dad works in Queens and we thought about buying seasons and him taking the CA games and I get the MSG games, but due to the level of comp at MSG, and the fact I still get student prices, did not make sense.

The crowd size was disappointing but the place was really loud. I was wondering during the game if anything had been done to amplify the crowd noise. I know a few season ticket holders who did not attend due to work constraints.

What annoys me is why the lower bowl is sealed off like it is Fort Knox rather than letting the crowd move down. It would certainly look better on TV if those seats were filled.

I have to agree, was not expecting a sellout given the start time but I thought we would have a better crowd given that it was the season opener, a nationally televised game, a team that was (and may be in the tournament again this year) & Lavin's return to full time coaching for us.

I think it is an unfair shot at st johns by someone who may have an agenda to stick the knife into us and hamper recruiting. Let's face it the game time for a game in Queens was a problem. I would guess that most people with season tickets couldnt make it and if their seats were taken they had given the tickets away as I had to do. Couple all of that with a region that is still recovering from Sandy and the northeaster and the attendance is easy to understand. I know people who only got their power back today and others still without power or homes. So Lavin's first game back is not necessarily on the top of everyone's list. Sometimes there are more important thing in life.

St. John's playing and recruiting at a high level bodes well for Kieran Darcy (the NY writer) so I don't think he meant it in any way against the school. Probably just a blurb that he should've left out.

Watching the 6AM Stony Brook vs. Rider game, it was a packed house albeit in a tiny gym. But they got out and supported which I think is great.

I think classes should been suspended between 1PM-6PM. Probably would've had a near capacity crowd.

I often wonder whether there are ever any meetings/discussions that transpire for the specfiic purpose of improving attendance.

It seems like the only thing we ever hear about are surveys testing willingness to pay for the right to have a seat or point systems. I understand that they need funds to to sustain the variety of athletic programs that they oversee.

Create demand for limited supply and willingness for people to pay extra will follow.

How dumb to expect a capacity crowd in our 2nd rate on campus facility at 2 PM right in the middle of the day when students have classes and other people are at work. I'm shocked that many showed up.

Anyone who expected a packed house must no next to nothing about our history and fan base. I parked like 9 blocks away because the game was at 2pm with a commuter school in session aka kiss parking goodbye.

But yes as someone brought up the 6am game was packed and thats head scratching. Has to fall on whoever is in charge of campus activities and rallying students. Unfortunately knowing STJ as well as I do there is just sadly a large number of students who don't give a rats ass about athletics.

Rider has made that 6am game an annual event. It's the only time they get on ESPN every year and they make it one of the biggest events on campus annually I think.

I think the issue at SJ is that games are viewed as just "something to do" and they don't have that true attachment with the team. Perhaps that's because we don't have an identity yet. We go to the tournament in 2011 then win 13 games and lose to Northeastern this past year. What we need is consistency in our program and that will get the crowds packed. There are also lots of international students who seem to only be focused on academics and not the extras like sports. Just speculation of course. I think Carnesecca can also use big improvements. There's nothing flashy or unique about it really. I know lots of schools do the same but I hate the bleachers...if I'm 23 and my back is killing me the next day from no back support, that's bad. They should make it more comfortable. It's like a square shape right now. Why not make it a bowl and start filling students and the public in lower seats? This would make a big difference.

Also, don't forget SJ is a major commuter school. That campus feel isn't there as much as say Nova where many people actually live.

I'm glad you put that last sentence in because that is, was and for the foreseeable future will be a major factor.

I can explain the problem of the poor attendance. I studied the ticket prices and they are too high for this current economy. The prices are way to expensive for someone to go to. I went to at least 30 Yankee games over the last two years because I was able to purchase 10 dollar tickets (Sometimes 5 dollar tickets) off of stubhub.com and sometimes scalpers on the street. I would never have paid 20 bucks or even 50 for the seats. Lots of my friends agree. If they want more people in attendance, they need to make the tickets more moderately priced. I can guarantee with certainty that the tickets would sell if the price was affordable. I still pay the high price for some games because I am a huge fan, but I’d go to them all if I didn't have to take out a loan to go. I highly reccomend it being 8 dollars for admission for the seats up top. This 25 - 30 dollar price is too expensive.

Jim, 100% agreed. As a student I enjoy $5 tickets and free exhibition games, but $25-$30 for CA is just insane. It really should be no more than $10 for the public to see a game at CA. It's highway robbery. This is the recipe for low attendance: 1) commuter school 2) team has been irrelevant for much of recent memory 3) crazy prices for general public 4) 2nd rate arena 5) no real identity or true expectations for the team...an unknown brand.

Big difference trying to fill 50,000 seats at Yankee Stadium and just 5,000 at Carnesecca.

PS - Easy for me to say, I paid $10 to watch a HS volleyball game last night.

But thats not for students? I don't think they charge students that. Agree for regular people that price for a slab of plastic under your ass in CA is a bit much.

I can't speak for students but as someone who works for a living I can tell you this game was a definite no can do. I just missed two weeks of work, one for lack of power and the second since our building was flooded. As you can imagine the boss may have been a little reluctant to excuse mid week, mid afternoon disappearances for college hoops games after having two (yes I am fortunate) paid weeks with barely a stitch of work. They can be funny that way. Now if the game had occurred a week earlier it may have been perfect timing and given me something to do. As they say timing is everything.

That's sort of how it used to be before the renovations with the student sections behind the hoop, albeit we stunk and not many students showed up. Love the bowl look though, but there is not enough student demand that would even fill a portion of a bowl.
