Well if we are only talking pay, Moe missed the big payday. He would have been a lottery pick if he stayed. Basketball wise I hope he is not 3 year and out of the NBA only to wind up overseas.

Not really. I don't see him as a top 10 pick in 2013 either. Moving up to #11 in 2013 would bring about 1.5 million in extra money in the first three years but he'd be walking away from his 12/13 salary of 1.4 million so the net loss is minimal.

Then there is the delayed gratification. Money now vs. money a year from now.

And he also will be signing his second contract earlier which, if he earns it, will get him into big bucks earlier and for one extra year since his retirement will likely be at the same age regardless of when he entered the league.

Guess it depends where you think he would have been drafted a year later but if you said 8th (which you can argue), he gives up 2.2 million to earn 1.4 a year earlier. S 800, 000 is a ton of money for a guy who is actually not guarantied by any means to get the 2nd contract you referring to. Not to mention, not quantifying how much that extra year means to his actual development.

All valid points. Just think it's such a crap shoot and you don't want to get Terrance Morris'd. No guarantee he would not have dropped in the draft so take the money and run. I was very critical when he declared. Being the astute judge of talent and potential that I am I though he was a borderline 1st round pick and stood little if any chance to sign for $5mill plus so I thought the extra year of development would help as well but I think he's draft position proves that he and his handlers analyzed the risks and benefits pretty accurately.

Not to mention that you are one ACL tear away from being the next Sam Bowie.

Not to mention that by and large these kids don't come from a lot of money and 1st round money changes their lives radically.

All points well taken. It will be interesting to see how Moe develops over the next 3 years, what his role is in Orlando, etc to see what happens in year 4. Is he just hanging on or a contributor making what his talent can earn him. Certainly no guaranties.
