ESPN: Harrison To Begin Season On The Bench

I love Lavin, and would never second guess anything he does. But I really think he is making a mistake with GG. He should be suited up and playing, Lav is recruiting better players than him going forward- let him help us this year and move on. We need the body anyhow.

Lets see what happens. I think today we might go with 7 but by Charleston he might change his tune on Gift if still no word on Sanchez.

We need to win this game today Moose. Regardless iF Sanchez is eventually allowed to play we can use GG this season. There are always injuries.

Injuries always happen? Who got hurt last year? Again most teams only run out 9 guys at most 10. We might not need Gift today. Why put him out there when you can buy a few extra days to see. If Sanchez can play I support Gift redshirting and understand based on where we stand in 2013 recruiting and who leaves and stays.

Moe had an ankle injury. Didn't miss a game but he suffered it mid-game and wasn't the same for the next game IIRC.

And best believe we were extremely fortunate not to have suffered more running 6 kids 30+ MPG.

You don't redshirt a Senior big just to save a ship.

Let's say they do redshirt him. Jones develops into an incredible talent and returns as a Soph. That means Obekpa is your starting C and Jones your starting PF. Gift still has to come off the bench. So what's the point? He's not that focal for next year. We can utilize him well this year.

Is Lavin all of a sudden gun shy n his recruiting prowess because he missed out on a few recruits over the last few weeks? I'd hate to believe that.

Are you serious? You never saw a team get injuries? We may have got lucky with no injuries last season but other stuff happened and you would have played at one point. Can never have enough bodies.

You can't just say injuries happen as an excuse. If we had Sanchez and him and Jakarr picked up and left after the year in addition to Gift. Then 3 frontcourt players are gone. Right now only 13 player we are after is Lawrence for 13. And he likes to play outside in the 3/4 role as opposed to 4/5, So stashing Gift if Orlando is eligible makes sense to preserve a frontcourt option for another year. Can only pull rabbit out of hat so many times. We got a lot of people last spring. Can't keep hoping for that considering upwards of 80% of top ranked players verbal and sign early.

Only argument someone can make is if they just want Gift gone. Because he falls behind the other 4 relevant frontcourt options we have this year. If you just want his ship gone thats your prerogative. But in many cases a 5th year Sr would be a better option than yet another new guy. We can't keep the revolving door going. Were not Kentucky.

I respect your opinion, and I know you know more about this stuff than I do. I just don't agree with redshirting Gift. Anyway, I took a half day from work and am pumped up for the game! GO JOHNNIES!!!!!!

Who said gun shy? Would you rather hope you find another Christian Jones falling into your lap who 'could' turn out good or could turn out to be a 4 yr mistake if hes not good. Or have a 5th yr senior that you pretty much know what your getting and focus attentions on '14 where less kids are committed?

What I find funny and ironic is how many people want to throw ships out like candy and fill up all 13 spots. But then when its pointed out only 9-10 ppl actually play for most teams there has to be manipulation to the ships. We can't cycle in 5-6 players every year. Its not healthy for us so you redshirt a guy or two. Unfortunately our 13 shrinks off the bat with Max out all year and Branch out till December.

Not claiming to know more. Just looking at the entire picture. Seeing what other teams do and have and lastly knowing what our 13 targets are right now. Everyone here wants more stability. If you play him then the number of players leaving after the year jumps and its still more throwing things against a wall with Spring recruiting and seeing what sticks.

While uncommon, Eugene Edgerson (sic) of Arizona redshirted his senior season and not for medical reasons. He was a valuable reserve but still sat out his senior year and completed his eligibility as a graduate student.

I don't have a problem with Gift redshirting as long as Sanchez is available.

Sanchez isnt available. Play Gift. Worse scenario Sanchez is cleared and we recruit another JC big for next year. We need depth so we can run, wear out teams and be in a better position to counter foul problems and injuries.

So we redshirt Felix this year. With no guards possibly leaving, who is to say he gets PT at all next year? Who's to say he gets pissed off and decides to transfer?

We're talking about 1 ship here- Gift's. There is a need on the court since we're more than likely losing a big in Sanchez. Regardless of the rotation (9, 10, whatever), the depth chart shows 1 Center right now. If you guys want to play small ball year after year, that's fine. But I'm sick of seeing arguably our best slash-type player (Moe last year and now Jakarr this year) slotted in as Center or the 3rd a forward, however you want to look at it.

There is no reason to red shirt Felix. He will most likely be here as a roll player for four years. I'd rather he be coming off the bench today if we get into foul trouble or an injury then Jamal White. It doesn't make sense to me at all..If Sanchez was eligible, I totally get the red shirting of GG..I don't understand Felix though...

Your 'sick' of seeing that? It seems thats Lavin's recruiting strategy getting interchangeable players and not players so defined to the 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 positions. A mismatch on one end is also a mismatch on the other remember.

haha, i just saw that...smart move...we need that kids motor and hops on the floor...we are a better team with felix on the bench even if its to relieve a guy for a couple of minutes here and there...good move on the staffs part if true

I agree.

But Gift also can be a mismatch. No big could keep up with him in OOC games last year.

We lose a big. We have a big in his last year. For the last time, it makes no sense to me to sit him.

Besides, 2013 might go down as one of the deepest recruiting classes in recent memory. Guys will slip. A talented kid like Kentan Facey is ranked 99. You're telling Lavin can't find a serviceable big or transfer equal in talent to Gift in the Spring?

Jordan Dickerson 7'1 and slipped right through past April. I wouldn't mind someone like him as a 10-13th man. Better than Sam Sealy.

I'm on record saying I wouldn't redshirt Felix. Also on record saying I think we might lose a guard.

Your 'sick' of seeing that? It seems thats Lavin's recruiting strategy getting interchangeable players and not players so defined to the 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 positions. A mismatch on one end is also a mismatch on the other remember.

10-13 barely play on teams!!!! I would never go past 11 players. Ever. Plus its great to have flexibility in case players slip like you said instead of the maybe game.

Sealy isnt on ship so not apples to apples. Lets see what Dickerson does. Where did he go again?

I think if you have Dickerson on the roster, then you probably don't have Jones. I'm not sure what Dickerson has done or is going to do at SMU. But, I have liked what I've seen, so far, from Jones.

SMU.
Never plays doesn't mean they'll never develop.
