ESPN CMA Article

that playground quote from Anderson had to make some of you groan, right? "School yard ball" has been a complaint on here I have seen a million times from the Mully/Lav regimes.

I like Anderson, I'm just saying that quote made me laugh because I know it pissed off at least half of the posters on here
Speaking of quotes, how about "We got to build some fences"? I've been hoping the staff would be building bridges. :)
or mending bridges. :)
The Robert Frost poem?? "Mending Wall" ends "good fences make good neighbors"

Great article; thanks Paultz.
While I share some misgivings about the lack of 4*s in our 2020 Class, I am confident that CMA is the guy who will revive our program. I'm thinking there will be growing pains the first two seasons but also some exciting hoops to watch and gritty teams to root for--and with better days coming--not a bad world.
CD one of the problems with the last 2 staffs was that they did not get their teams to consistently play hard. CMA seems to be bringing in the kind of kids who will run through a brick wall for him, and I fully expect that he’ll have his teams playing hard game in and game out. If he consistently brings in a high enough level of talent(forget all this “he’ll coach them up” BS) then we’ll have a consistently successful program for the first time in 20 years.
Serious question: When your team is only 5 deep, and then the talent level drops precipitously, do you bench your best player if he does not always appear to play hard? Old school guys would say yes, but then again, if we did that and we got pasted by 30 points because one of our biggest threats was replaced by a guy who can't play at this level, then the same old school guys would call out the coach.

Problem with Lavin and Mullin rosters among other things were no height and no depth.
Like you Beast, I’m an old school kind of guy. Nothing drives me crazier than watching a guy with a boatload of talent not give it his all. One of the reasons why I was never a Robinson Cano fan. Granted he is getting paid millions to play hard. Of course it’s easy for guys like Nick Saban and K to put a kid on the bench, since Bama and Duke have stocked rosters. Not so easy for a coach with a short roster-especially one on the hot seat-to do that. I’m not going to name names, since we know who they are, but we’ve had a few kids like that here under the last 2 coaches. And that kind of behavior is contagious. I don’t expect we’ll see much of that under CMA. I don’t think he’ll tolerate it.

I have no doubt we will see a lot more consistency in method of coaching and game plan here under CMA. That’s a good thing because consistently winning is something we haven’t had in a long, long time. First real good coaching hire we have made in years. CMA deserves the floor here to build and show what he can do.

Great line from CMA on a reference to the old "40 minutes of hell" approach:

"It may be more like 25 minutes of hell, 15 minutes of what the hell are we doing? But it'll eventually get better and better."
By year 3 we'll have 40-minutes down pact.
40 minutes to get across the bridge or over the wall?
Wonderful article. We played some good defense at times in year 3 of Mullin's regime (and Owens helped cover up our defensive lapses), but last teams I remember watching that consistently played really tough minded NYC style basketball were Jarvis' early teams.

If CMA brings back that kind of tough, team-oriented bball, it will be "happy days are here again"! Looking forward to the start of the season - can't come soon enough.
NYC ballers were always tough to play against.
And1 found that out. Everyone that they played they did tricks and clowned on.
They knew NYC ballers wasn't having any of that BS. They knew it was gonna be a real game.

NEW YORK NEW YORK BABY

Edit
Can't wait to see CMA system at it's best, watching nyc ballers locking S* down, forcing turnovers. Getting in the opponents face.

Maybe I missed seeing it here, but Goodman had a douchey response to the article.

He did, however, say in another tweet that he heard CMA was working his ass off.

Very good ... but maybe a bit of a stretch.

I took it to mean fences to keep local stars here.
No doubt that's what he meant, but I have the haunting memory of speaking with a former HS coach who told me then-coach Mike Jarvis had built barriers between the university and local high schools. Whatever. Bottom line is that, despite my disappointment with recruiting (other than Alexander and Cole), the new staff seem to be working their butts off.

He has some sort of problem with SJU and the fans. I have a problem with how it looks like he has cement in his mouth when he tries to speak

Good article; thanks for posting.

Coach Anderson is the first legit mens college basketball coach that StJohn's hired since it hired Mike Jarvis way- way back in 1998. The hiring process for men's basketball coaches has not put a whole lot of importance on hiring experience.

In 2004 StJohn's President "Suits" Harrington even talked about eliminating the men's basketball program after he canned Jarvis. Thereafter Harrington hired Norm Roberts, who had no D1 head coaching experience. When Suits terminated Roberts he hired media personality Steve Lavin who had been out of coaching for 7 seasons after he had been fired from his only D1 head coaching job. After Lavin was terminated President Bobby G again trivialized the importance of coaching experience when in 2015 he hired sweetheart Chris Mullin, who also lacked any coaching experience. Mullen went on to register a 4 season Big East record of 20 wins and 57 losses (being a winning percent of just 27%).

So hell yes, it is refreshing to watch Coach Mike Anderson, an experience professional take over the coaching duties, assemble a solid staff, and display a strong work ethic at our beloved StJohn's.

Time will tell how successful Coach Anderson will be at StJohn's but it sure is easy to take a liking to him.

Nice article. Interesting that the “face” of the program now is Coach MA. However, the man with the “keys” is AD Mike Cragg.
I think he is the right man for the job. I have real confidence for the first time in a long time we have a professional working on our side. This rebuild is going to take time. Make no mistake. Of course, we have been in rebuild for 25 years or so. That makes thing tougher as even the patience of the most ardent supporters gets pushed to the limit with every misstep. I think Cragg himself will be very patient. He knows he needs to give Coach MA time to get the program headed in the right direction. I can’t speak for fans other than myself but I would like to think within 3 years we are going to be in a much better place.
