ESPN CMA Article

Great article. I love the defensive mentality. We haven't really had an identity on defense in a long time. I said throughout Lavin and Mullin, we lost our identity as a tough, scrappy, gritty program. Coach is laying the foundation to change that.

I love defensive minded teams as well. The Oakley Ewing Starks Mason X Knicks made you pay when you took the ball to the hoop - watch those tapes and you wonder how they all didn't foul out in the first quarter.

I think that our impressions are often created in the aggregate after the overall results are in. I do recall that somewhere, perhaps year 3 when Lovett was healthy, perhaps this past season early on, we were play our best on ball defense in a very long time. Of course, both seasons unraveled, Mullin year 3 with Lovett's injury, and year 4 where for whatever reason they stopped playing well.

I know mullin said he'd be at all the local gyms when he started, but i think CMA will actually DO IT::

"It doesn't matter if you're from New York or outside of New York, if you don't build relationships or spend time with people, you're not going to be successful," DeMeo said. "He's done both of those things in a short amount of time. He's intimately involved with recruiting on a daily basis."

"He's been extremely active," Wehye said of the new staff's approach to recruiting New York. "They're aggressive, straightforward. [Anderson is] just an honest dude. That's what I like the most. And they put the work in. They were there at open gyms with the whole staff. ... It's definitely a renewed effort."

that playground quote from Anderson had to make some of you groan, right? "School yard ball" has been a complaint on here I have seen a million times from the Mully/Lav regimes.

I like Anderson, I'm just saying that quote made me laugh because I know it pissed off at least half of the posters on here

Wonderful article. We played some good defense at times in year 3 of Mullin's regime (and Owens helped cover up our defensive lapses), but last teams I remember watching that consistently played really tough minded NYC style basketball were Jarvis' early teams.

If CMA brings back that kind of tough, team-oriented bball, it will be "happy days are here again"! Looking forward to the start of the season - can't come soon enough.

Nice article. Looking forward to this season and pulling for a coach with his approach to College basketball (recruiting and defense mindedness).

The quotes from Heron are what really stand out. The way he describes the vision and what they are trying to instill, the conditioning -- excited to see it come to fruition

I love all the enthusiasm and saying the right things etc. Important report cards:

1) After the first 3 OOC games
2) At the conclusion of the OOC schedule
3) After 3 games of the Big East Season
4) Midway point of Big East Season
5) Conclusion of Regular season
6) If we are even talking about a post season, will be a success.

Until then, just all nice positive signs and good words.

Thething I have felt for a number of years was that we relied on too few players and were constatntly running out of gas late in games and late in season. I liked Heron's on the biggest change being practices and conditioning--when teams hit the wall...we will be hitting our stride because of the things we are doing this time of year.

Great article; thanks Paultz.
While I share some misgivings about the lack of 4*s in our 2020 Class, I am confident that CMA is the guy who will revive our program. I'm thinking there will be growing pains the first two seasons but also some exciting hoops to watch and gritty teams to root for--and with better days coming--not a bad world.

CD one of the problems with the last 2 staffs was that they did not get their teams to consistently play hard. CMA seems to be bringing in the kind of kids who will run through a brick wall for him, and I fully expect that he’ll have his teams playing hard game in and game out. If he consistently brings in a high enough level of talent(forget all this “he’ll coach them up” BS) then we’ll have a consistently successful program for the first time in 20 years.

Agree Monte. I think and hope CMA will recruit solid 3* / 4* talent from 2021 onward, but we shall see. It does look like this Staff sure the heck works hard.

Speaking of quotes, how about "We got to build some fences"? I've been hoping the staff would be building bridges. :)

Well said. Even our best teams over the past few years were prone to taking a night off and getting surprised by weaker opponents.

We might not be the most talented team in the country over the next couple years, but we may be the ones pulling a few surprises...

Serious question: When your team is only 5 deep, and then the talent level drops precipitously, do you bench your best player if he does not always appear to play hard? Old school guys would say yes, but then again, if we did that and we got pasted by 30 points because one of our biggest threats was replaced by a guy who can't play at this level, then the same old school guys would call out the coach.

Problem with Lavin and Mullin rosters among other things were no height and no depth.

I took it to mean fences to keep local stars here.

Agreed although, this program will have more structure compared to the previous coaching staff. The Mullin years were filled with failed/attempted highlight reel plays, I did grimace with that comment but Anderson will bring the playground tenacity not so much of the showboating. Excited for the season actually hopeful.
