Big loss for SMU & their league.

That sucks, man. Sucks for SMU and college basketball, as a whole.

Not every one is college material, was a saying once upon a time. And today, the majors of many college athletes is of little value in the real world both economically or culturally. So if the young man wants to go to work good for him.

Don't agree, for the game that is, obviously it sucks for SMU. As much as I think it hurt the NBA when they took kids straight out of HS I think it also hurts college ball taking kids who don't want to go to school. I've been a vocal proponent of kids playing in the D-League or Europe for their gap year between HS and the NBA (maybe 2 gap years in the next CBA) as it's better for all concerned. College hoops doesn't get bogged down with kids who don't want to be there potentially hurting the integrity of the game and/or the institutions they attend, kids can get paid right away - which is what they want- and it doesn't have to be under the table, and NBA gets these kids into an environment where the long term investment potential is more accurately measured based upon the kids performance on and off the court in an environment that is more similar to the NBA. Even at it's peak only about 6-8 kids per year were jumping direct to the NBA. The college game is not going to suffer from the loss of 6-8 kids per year.

Yep, that still holds true, IMO.

So if the young man wants to go to work good for him.

Good luck to him. Personally, I wished he would've gone to college for a year or two. That is just me wanting the best for college basketball. Once again, good luck to Mudiay.

Did the Lakers ever hire a coach? I remember them rumored to be interested in Brown. I'd actually resign and go for it if I were him.

This is good news for us. SMU seemed prime to finish top two in their newly weaker conference. Mudiay could have easily put them past us, but I think we are ahead of them now.

If you took the 6-8 top freshmen this year and took them away from the college game it would have hurt tremendously.

FWIW I am a kids must go to college guy though. I wish it was 2 and done.

Well said. The college system makes too many kids think they're nba material, and then every year 75 kids enter D-1 expecting to be "one and done". It sets unrealistic expectations. Let the kids who are purely using it as a stepping stone to the NBA prepare themselves in minor league bball.

This is why I hate the 2 years out of high school rule. The kid obviously had no desire to attend college. And our system would have forced him to do such that. To me, that's not right.

Concur, mase.

Although, I'm not "kids must go to college guy," but I certainly prefer kids going to college for, at least, two years. I'm more of a college basketball fan than a pro hoops fan, so I'm bias towards the college game.

There are lots of good basketball players who need more than basketball-based income to reduce their vulnerability to cons and scams and hangers on. Don't know if college provides some of that but there are so many who had millions and now are indigent or economically at risk that some kind of protection for these hoop geniuses is needed.

I respectfully disagree that it would have made very much difference at all in the overall entertainment value and quality of play.

They really aren't forced to do anything. They have the option of going overseas or plaing in the D-League. College is not that hard for these guys. They have tutors and schedules setup to do very little.

This whole thing makes no sense. Literally 98% of top 10 recruits out of high school get drafted to the NBA within 2 years, most of them lottery picks.

What does make sense is what Jeff Goodman at ESPN is reporting:

However, the athletic 6-foot-5 point guard, considered a one-and-done possibility, is concerned about amateurism issues and not academics or financial stability, the source told ESPN.com. SMU accepted Mudiay academically.

"The NCAA is on him," the source said. "And he's worried."

Under Armour, which sponsors Prime Prep and also Mudiay's summer team, Mo Williams Elite, is helping him land a lucrative deal overseas, the source said.

If you are like me Austour, and live, breath and sleep college basketball, then I agree it wouldn't effect the overall entertainment value greatly. But if you are a casual college bball fan then I think it would. They hyped up Wiggins, Parker, Randle to no end throughout the year. It was all you heard about for the first month of so of the season.

I don't dispute that, but the media would simply find someone else to hype up. This year's freshman class was special. No doubt about it but I can't say it affected my enjoyment of the game or viewing habits but like you I'm a junkie. Maybe it does affect recreational viewers but that's not my concern I guess.

So it looks like Jeff Goodman was right and Mudiay was being investigated by NCAA. It made zero sense that he would go overseas. Too bad.
