Bobby G. has shrunk the athletic department. Grumblings starting around campus that he isn't the guy they thought they hired. During the interview process and when new he was warm and engaging, even for a naturally shy person. Now, staff says they see little of the engaging and warm nature. I was surprised by the hire, since today a university president has to be charismatic, a people person, and be able to connect with alumni as a fundraiser when a school embarks upon a campaign. Fr. Cahill had almost none of that. Harrington cherry picked, and went after big donors and did not ignite the alumni base. With the decision to hire a layperson, the school could have gotten the whole package in terms of talents and abilities. Instead they may have hired a CFO, and not a CEO. JSJ has met and knows Bobby G. and I believe would feel different about his abilities.
I met Ed Kull a number of times over the years, and certainly is a nice enough guy. I can't speak about his competencies the way others have, but perhaps Bobby G. is cutting expenses further in the A.D. since this years basketball squad has not exactly met initial expectations of increased attendance and season ticket subscribers. Remember, they are paying Mullin a big time salary, and had to pay off Lavin as well.
