Dwayne Polee

People say Lavin had the impossible task of recruiting a whole team and blame Norm, but people forget Lavin asked players to leave.

Yeah keeping Omari around for another 3 years would have been great idea. This place would have been screaming about a wasted scholarship.

Most times a new coach starts there is turnover. Players already there didn't sign up to play for him so naturally there is mutual parting many times.

It's one thing to ask/tell someone to leave..its another thing to tell then the hard, cold facts -- that any promises they were made re: PT, by the previous regime, were now off the table...the latter is not unreasonable

The one that really got to me was Lavin dumping Ron Roberts. He just went for 20 and 16 boards vs Notre Dame and has had multiple double doubles for St Joe's this year. Having a guy like that might have gotten us an extra season out of both Harkless and Sampson. To me that was in Steve's top 10 stupid moves.

My understanding was it was a mutual parting. Both parties felt it would be best to go in another direction.
Sort of like resign or be fired is a mutual agreement. Got to believe if Lavin wanted RR he would have come to St. John's. Not saying the decision was right or wrong.

My understanding is Lavin paid more attention to the pieces already on board and Roberts was kind of irked that Lavin didn't reach out sooner or more often.

That is how I remember it also which kind of shows Lavin was not really interested in giving a ship to RR.

I don't fault him for paying more attention to the guys ON the team. He probably figured if its a Norm recruit he might not be great and I can get someone ranked higher in Polee so he did what he did. If Roberts wanted to come I'm sure Lavin would have taken him but like I said I think mutually it was each party doing what they felt. Lavin not paying him attention and him wanting to look elsewhere.

So you think Roberts wanted to play for Norm but not Lavin? Hard to figure. I think it was more Lavin's doing, not wanting the kid, then anything mutual. After Roberts saw the writing on the wall it became more "mutual".

No I think Roberts could have come here if he wanted. But he wanted more love out of the gate and Lav ignored him at the expense of the kids already on board. Then when Roberts wavered Lav saw he could make a 'splash' with a Top 100 kid which was something foreign to STJ at the time. Obviously that didn't work out.

Could Roberts put these numbers up consistently in the BE? Probably not. But would he be an upgrade to the ghost of Orlando and Gift we currently have? Yes no doubt.

I'll admit that I haven't looked at St. Joe's schedule, but I would be surprised if their strength of schedule is any worse than ours. So, up to this point, I think it's safe to say that Ron Roberts numbers would be comparable. I've heard one poster suggest that he might not be the same player b/c he wouldn't have gotten pt two years ago. I don't buy it. The kid would have been playing at least 30 minutes a game last year so he would have gotten plenty of burn by now.

On the whole BE teams are better than A10 teams. That's my only point. I wasn't trying to put down what he has accomplished. Just facts. Just like David Laury in the MAAC wouldnt put up his Baldi loving numbers in a different conference.
