Played 4 minutes last night against Arizona
Would have played a lot more had he stayed at St John's
Too bad for both of us

He was unwilling to put the effort in in the weight room. Glad he's gone.

I miss more Ronald Roberts, who is averaging more than 8 rebounds.

I agree. We could really use an upperclassman that hits the boards effectively. Polee is a poor man's Sampson, but he still would have played 30 mpg last year and 20 or so this year.

I don't miss either. Polee had limited skills, no range on his shot, couldn't dribble with his left hand, and gambled in the passing lanes far too often. Roberts was a grade B player.

We could certainly use Ron Roberts these past 2 seasons. The higher ranked player does not always turn out to be the better player.

in other news, Omari Lawrence is averaging just under 11 minutes & 3 pts a game at Kansas State. Those are both considerably up from his sophomore season. I actually thought SJU might miss his services, but I doubt he'd play 10 minutes a game on this squad.

Omari Lawrence = Jamal White

Another player who was grossly over-rated by this board and fan base.
We all thought he would be the next coming of Bootsy Thorton and here he is in his fourth year if college and is getting 11 minutes a game of pt.
What a joke.

He looked so good in the two or three games of his senior year I caught streaming online. Not sure what happened. He really looked like he had legit 10-minute-a-game point guard skills, which would have been huge for Norm.

A little harsh, no North? It is easy to overrate kids that you have seen at best a few times (and usually not at all). Hope springs eternal. We all want to believe that the kids we have coming here are the best possible, and sometimes it does not turn out that way. Happy New Year.

Omari had talent. I was sad to see him go. From looking at him in highschool than prep then on to St. John's it looked like he may have got a little out of shape and unfortunately may have put him in a hole he couldn't get out of. Best of luck to him at K state.

The one that really got to me was Lavin dumping Ron Roberts. He just went for 20 and 16 boards vs Notre Dame and has had multiple double doubles for St Joe's this year. Having a guy like that might have gotten us an extra season out of both Harkless and Sampson. To me that was in Steve's top 10 stupid moves.

I take it Christian Jones did not make up for that stupid move ??

Wow I did not know he was that good. A player with that ability really would have helped us this season and last.
Oh well as we all know recruiting is far from an exact science.
Omari is a nobody while Ron Roberts can be a star.

He's averaging 10.4 and 7.9 as a junior. We could use those numbers if he was capable of replicating them here (and playing center), but don't make him out to be a world-beater.

And he wouldn't have gotten 19.5 minutes a game here as a freshman like he did at St. Joe's, so he may not have developed the same way.

Not sure who he pushes to the bench -- certainly not Harkless and not Sampson, either. if anything, he allows them to play small forward all year, which may push them out just as fast.

I wish Roberts well, but I'd still rather have Sampson and Obekpa getting minutes.

No one here wants to take minutes away from Sampson and Obekpa but no one can deny that a 6 8 junior averaging 8 boards a game would certainly help our rebounding challenged team.

Bobre I don't recall the particulars surrounding RR's release from his commitment, but wasn't it by mutual consent? Norm undoubtedly expected RR to be a major contributor where as Lavin expected him to be more of roll player, at best. I'm assuming they had that conversation and parted ways. We've criticized Calhoun, etc for recruiting over kids, which is what Lavin would have done to RR. I know things didn't play out as we expected-with Harkless leaving, Sampson missing last year, Sanchez out this year, GG being red-shirted, etc-but you know what that old saying about hindsight.

People say Lavin had the impossible task of recruiting a whole team and blame Norm, but people forget Lavin asked players to leave.

My understanding was it was a mutual parting. Both parties felt it would be best to go in another direction.
