Dowling College closing on June 3,2016

Dowling College in Oakdale,Suffolk County is closing no merger was able to happen with another institution.

The first domino to fall locally for private universities since the 2009 recession,

I am concerned St. John's without a comprehensive plan for the rest of the 21st century may suffer the same fate.

Not enough close to being a fair comparison
Dowling has been in dire financial straits for a long time
They lost more than half their enrollment in the past seven years
They were an expensive commuter school that hardly anybody off L.I. ever heard of
The expansion to the Brookhaven campus was a financial disaster
Hiring Former Suffolk Co. Exec. Gaffney as Pres. to fund raise was a nightmare as well
The guy did absolutely nothing while in office and was bought out
In this case, the handwriting was on the wall for a long time - no surprise

Long time coming. They've been in a death spiral for a long time.

In another strong move, Molloy College swooped in and is helping students get settled with a new college - likely many to Molloy. Drew Bogner is a strong leader, adn SJU should consider him for their next president.

I dont see any comparison between St. John's and Dowling in any way.

Another school to keep an eye on is St Joseph's College
Campuses in Brooklyn and Patchogue (Long Island)
Bond ratings have dropped
Could be experiencing financial difficulty in the not too distant future

Mark,

Decent post I think many private schools locally are in trouble( you mentioned St. Joseph's college) however Dowling's tuition was $29,000 SJU's is $38,900
4 year graduation rate for SJU is 40% , better than Dowling's 17% but still absymmal. SJU is very expensive despite better course offerings and being larger. Is the ROI worth it?

Maybe, but I do not even know SJU's vision for the rest of the 21st century, will they expand more into the sciences, medical fields, will they look into engineering? Will they offer more entrepreneural classes ?

The old economy is dying each day employees are being downsized, shipped overseas or replaced by consultants and in some cases robots. Besides being ethical and dedicated to the important values of community service what other areas will SJU be strong in the coming years?

With high school enrollments declining and the economy being stagnant, it is more important than ever that private colleges have a short and long term strategic plan in order to maintain their future enrollment. At least St John's is a school that has "name" recognition beyond the NY metro area. Schools like Dowling and St Joseph's do not. Having said that, I hold two degrees from St John's and, while I really enjoyed my time there, I never felt that I was getting a "world class" education. I truly hope that the decision makers at St John's have the vision to look at where the future employment opportunities will likely be and adjust the program of study to meet those needs.

Hate to say it but some schools need to close down for the betterment of the entire system and maybe the others will wake up that their cost structure is too high

Having a pharmacy school is a good thing.

How will that play when then are two new pharmacy schools in NYS? Demand for pharmacists was fueled nationally by the rapid expansion of walgreens and cvs. This demand will eventually slow. In the early 70s both Fordham and Columbia shuttered their pharmacy schools. For decades, only 4 pharmacy schools existed in NYS.

For certain, health care, at 17% of our economy, are important areas of education that will not go away. However, the delivery of care is fraught with unsustainable inefficiencies and explosive cost increases. I'm not so sure that SJU really does any comprehensive planning in course offerings and instead is simply reactive to current market forces.

Maybe they should open a campus in Mumbai. The tuition could be very affordable and there would be many opportunities for students to learn how corporate America works in the new economy.

Binghamton is opening its Pharmacy school in 2017. Who else is opening a pharmacy school?

Stony Brook

If I understand its initial plans, Binghamton hopes to use the Pharmacy school in conjunction with its nursing school to improve health care in the Southern Tier of NY. In addition they hope to lure Pharmaceutical companies to the region with tax incentives. The Southern Tier was recently given a huge grant from New York State for many projects. The hope is to bring back better paying jobs similar to what is happening in the Albany area. Not sure how quickly/easy this will be.

The jobs number released today doesn't help

Since you mentioned Binghamton, my Daughter is transferring there after spending two years at St. John's. She is a Business Major.
