There wasn’t any doubt whether or not he could coach. That was not the debate. The debate was whether or not we should hire him due to “the baggage” he carried with him from that decade after he was fired from Louisville.When i think back to the debate on this site many years ago about whether or not to hire Rick Pitino, i have to laugh. How could anyone debate the coaching skills this man has? How could anyone who listens to our players now give praise to Coach P., doubt his commitment to making these players better young men? Thank God for Father Shanley and his wisdom! We could never have a better leader for this basketball team than Coach Rick Pitino! Thank you Rick for coming to St. Johns! If only Louie could see it all.
Two parts to my post;There wasn’t any doubt whether or not he could coach. That was not the debate. The debate was whether or not we should hire him due to “the baggage” he carried with him from that decade after he was fired from Louisville.
On one side, you had those who didn’t care about any baggage, they wanted him here. On the other side you had two groups, one who wanted him to “rehabilitate” himself elsewhere first and the other who didn’t want any part of him period. Again, but it was never about his ability to coach. Once his stint in Greece was over and by January of his last season at Iona, the former and some of the latter were on board with bringing him in and joined those who wanted him from the beginning.
What is funny is the fickle, down trodden, beaten down, woe is me fan whose lets any setback cause fear and doubt on this program and this coach (this is in general and not pointed directly at anyone). As far as this coach, it was criticism of his criticism and comments on the players (lack of lateral quickness etc.) and the wailing and gnashing of teeth during the first month of the Portal season last season. You look back at that, now that is laughable.
It’s a new reign. Onward and upward, in Pitino we trust.
Getting a second chance is directly proportional to the talent and success someone brings to the table.There’s a lot to be said for 2nd chances.
There was no debate about his coaching ability nor his being able to connect with and mold players in a positive manner on and off the court. playTwo parts to my post;
1)Coaching ability
2)Ability to mold young men into mature responsible adults
Dont disagree with first part of your post but you didnt address second part. In my opinion, very difficult to radically change your morality 180 degrees. He had same positive influences on his players 25 years ago that he does now. Ask any one of them.
Very good summary, bravo well-said. Rick has made believers out of all three groups and then some. My biggest worry was he didn't want to come here. Now look at The Tonight Show and he is Mr. Broadway, right where he belongs.There wasn’t any doubt whether or not he could coach. That was not the debate. The debate was whether or not we should hire him due to “the baggage” he carried with him from that decade after he was fired from Louisville.

I resemble that remark.What is funny is the fickle, down trodden, beaten down, woe is me fan whose lets any setback cause fear and doubt on this program and this coach (this is in general and not pointed directly at anyone).
So easy to root for. Even people who casually watch or have watched one Vice episode say that.How can you not love these kids? Not only are they great players, but also high character individuals.
Didn’t know the story about his heart attack. He and Bronny James were both out at the same time due to heart ailments.Now I'm a Vince fan!
