DePaul

……….Then of course was the high 6 figure university loan to his chief of staff and Harrington business partner ….

Wow... really surprised the Torch wrote all this. On their website now they say they are an independent newspaper - if they weren't back when they wrote this, could see the university stopping their funding.

While the board of trustees likelt decided to terminate both FH and RW without criminal or civil charges, they could have done both.

How the hell a 19-20 year old college kid becomes friends with a university president, is hired and meteorically ascends to chief of staff in 4 or 5 years raises eyebrows.

I was heavily involved in covering the Harrington/Wile/Chang story and was editor in chief in 2013-14. The Torch was (and I think) is financially independent. We made our money through advertising. That didn’t stop the university from exerting a lot of pressure, none of which stopped us from covering this from start to finish.

Bravo!!

Was
Harrington, the school president, said he would recommend the elimination of the program if it continues to embarrass the university.

 Hmm
, I wonder what Harrington had to say about Chang's testimony that she had sex with Father Cahill, and if true, what was her deal with Harrington?

Incredible gall and hypocrisy from a priest who was taking "free" leisure trips, cash in envelopes, 2 high end Patek Philippe watches, free custom tailored suits - all under the guise of being from Taiwanese donors. There were so few auditing controls that all were being paid from a credit card from taiwan , fully reimbursed to Cecilia Chang because she submitted statements in Mandarin or Cantonese.

Then of course was the high 6 figure university loan to his chief of staff and Harrington business partner Rob Wile to purchase a home I believe overlooking the Hudson River for a renovation job. Wile solicited at least one 6 figure loan for the renovation from a board of trustee member, and then showed no inclination to repay it.

Put all that on the scales of justice vs a group of college kids disputing payment to a hooker in Pittsburgh. Harrington was outraged by group sex, but I would also question why he had invited Rob Wile to accompany him alone on caribbean beach vacation. (Wile instead brought his girlfriend).

This no good creep then lied and said he gave the cash to the poor. Yea, right. Why the heck he is still a Vincentian priest is more embarrassing than a really bad decision by former players in a Pittsburgh hotel room.

Before anyone here suggest DePaul drop.out of the big east, just remember we are one "bargain " coach and a group of big NIL backers from being back near the bottom.
Beast great post !!!

I remember back when I was a student, one year the Torch put out a special April’s Fools edition called the Scorch IIRC. It spoofed everything including coverage of a St. John’s vs Georgetown led by Patrick Chewing. They even spoofed an ad using the Marines’ “The Few, the Proud, the Marines” slogan. The ad (a drawing/sketch showed a toilet bowl with an arm coming out of the bowl holding a scrub brush and the caption read “The Few, The Proud, the McClean”. McClean being the name of the cleaning service used back then.

Well all of a sudden the Special Edition disappeared real fast as the administration didn’t appreciate the satire of the edition and had them removed. The aftermath consisted of rumors that some members of the Torch staff might have gotten “in trouble” while others quit due to the removal of the edition. Maybe they were not as independent back then.

So kudos to the staff for the Wile article and their other coverage.

I was editor in chief of The Torch in my senior year, 1991-92.

We were always financially independent. Our revenue was made through advertising that we procured. As such, we did not get college credits for being on the editorial board. Instead we received a grant that was applied against tuition.

It allowed us to write about things that did not always put the school in a good light.

Our “competitor” was “St. John’s Today” which was run by the University professors and gave college credits to those students. They wrote the fluff pieces.

The big story I wrote about was while I was Sports Editor. It was the rape accusation against the lacrosse team (this predated Duke lacrosse).

The tabloids circled the school like vultures, and some of their reporters would come to the Torch asking us to share information, since we had access to the team.

They yammered about “being on the the same team”. I told the editor in chief at the time those reporters should screw off. If the roles were reversed, they would not share anything with us.

What’s the big deal about DePaul? Even the best conferences have a couple of weak sisters. In the heyday of the Big East - the early- mid 80s - not all teams were good. UConn and Seton Hall were awful. Then both got good coaches (Calhoun and Calesimo) and both improved quickly.

If my memory is correct Rob’s dad had ties to the University and Harrington.

After winning the national championship, Rob and another soccer player was named to the President’s Society, St. John’s University’s highest honor society. It wasn’t uncommon for 3-4 athletes to be named to this society yearly. So Rob had ties to Harrington through the President Society.

I walked around Campus for 4 years in the mid 80’s and never understood why we had a Sun Yat-Sen building. Really cool looking but never understood why a Catholic school in Queens had this style building. Took me 40 or so years to catch on to the shenanigans. 😖

The Sun Hat-Sen building was constructed with funds from Taiwan. When Nationalist China was forced to leave the Mainland, many of their most precious and valuable sacred items were brought to the US. SJU made that building as a museum and safe storage facility for them. It was guarded 24-7 by Public Safety and it was also covered with sophisticated security measures. It had nothing to do with Chang.
