Defend the 3 pt line

Our losses this year is because of our poor defense in defending against the 3. All of our BE losses you will find some guy killing us from long distance shot.

I ask , why we allow so much space so the shooter can get off his shot? I am far from an expert but if I see tjhis I am sure the staff sees it also. So why does it happen over and over again. Creighten,Duke, Butler, DePaul, Seton Hall took us to the wood shed. The staff are not idiots so what is the real reason?

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the defensive gameplan (especially without Zierden) was to back off the three a little and not let them get in to the paint. Teams used to do that all the time to us when we were a bad three point shooting team. Unfortunately they hit them last night. I believe they hit 9 in the first half and 4 in the second half so an adjustment was made. I just wish they could make adjustments during timeouts and not have to wait until the half.

Because we have no depth and as a result are forced to play zone to preserve our guys energy. To add, we don't play a strong zone. If a team is facing a team who plays an undisciplined zone, you can get wide open 3's all day. That's what you're seeing.

It seems the book is out on defeating SJU in the Big East. The last four conference games teams have shot 21,30.26 and 30 threes against this team. Even when they shot like garbage early against SJU they did not abandon the strategy and just kept chucking eventually hitting enough to overcome early misses. Johnnie's won 2 or the 4 games. They do not appear to want to challenge Johnnies interior defense and it is working. By contrast Duke shot 19 threes, and most good teams shoot less than 15 a game. Pitino who loves the three has Louisville shooting under 20 in most games, Kentucky under 15. Just an observation but conference games are always harder as the opposing coaches spend way more time figuring what will work against teams and what the percentages are.

What I often see.......

When you play three and four guard line-ups there are the inevitable mismatches. (How many times have we seen DLO down low guarding a much bigger opponent?)

These mismatches cause us to play a lot of "help defense". (How many times have we seen Dom leave his man and come out of nowhere to make the save?)

When you play help defense, you leave your man open. Teammates must be alert and ready to "rotate" or close on the open man. I have actually seen us do it well for short stretches. However, this thin team eventually gets fatigued and has enough lapses to get burned.

Creighton still had good looks in the 2nd half, they just didn't make as many. Our defense is "I hope they miss the 3" and when they do, we make the game competitive. This is what we have for the rest of the season...give them looks behind the arc and hope they miss. Pathetic
