Dave Telep Chat

combined if marco & wood average more than 15 minutes per game, I'd be shocked. Especially is SJU lands Chandler, like many on this board seem to think they will. Obviously, its different positions, but it would eat into overall available minutes.

I could very well be wrong, but I think you are way off. Bourgault shot over 200 three pointers (wow!) and made them at a 42% clip. He's also good on the boards at 6'6 because he's sturdy and physically mature, with a prep year at Notre Dame Prep and two years in college (one as a redshirt). He's a smart player that moves the game along with his IQ, positioning, and passing. I could see him being very good for us in the half court and a nightmare in transition as a true triple-threat. I think he'll be a very solid role player and get 15 mpg himself.

I really believe Wood has first round potential. Some have recently indicated that he won't be eligbile this season, but the kid is a stud and would be our second leading scorer by the end of his first season. I'm very impressed with this kid, and it will be very tough to kep him off the court with his scoring and shooting ability. Juan Dixonesque.

I'm not able to copy the excerpt but we only scored a B. Telep, "in the end Lavin salvaged the class and did the best he could to cobble together a four-man class." No specific mentioning of Branch or Sanchez which is obviously why we were graded so poorly. Basically talks about losing Gathers and getting Sampson to recommit and mentions Darrick Wood as briefly as you could possibly do so. We ranked 7th in the conference behind Nova and just ahead of Uconn and Georgetown.

He's 2 inches taller than Dixon tho. I think Wood plays a bigger game.

Bourgault was also one season removed from tearing his ACL. Many times, it takes a couple of seasons before a player is fully recovered from such an injury. Maybe, we get a chance to see what Bourgault really has to offer in the next couple of seasons.

Here was the only STJ mention:

Leon (East Meadow, NY)

Why isn't St. John's class rated higher? I think Jakarr Sampson will easily replace Harkless. Also any chance of them adding another big like Michael Chandler or Jordan Dickerson
Dave Telep (3:17 PM)

St. John's class is appropriately ranked IMO. Sampson is a good player but not sure he can carry the load the way Harkless did. Harkless had a bigger offensive game. Chandler and Dickerson aren't impact guys. In the case of Chandler, he's bounced around too much to be able to count on him until he proves himself as a player and shows some stability.

I see where Telep is attempting to go with his assessment, but it's not the most thought out reasoning. Quite frankly, Chandler has shown he can be an impact player when he has suited up.

IMO, he would've been better off saying, Chandler is an impact guy, but he needs to show some stability. The kid was a top 5 center in the 2011 class, and probably had the better offensive game of the group.

Who cares, games aren't won based on where a recruiting analyst ranked a class.

It is nearly impossible to gauge because of movement and such but would be interesting to marry up recruiting rankings to winning %'s

Don't get me wrong you need talent I'm just not worried about teleps ranking since he isn't counting half our class and is speaking out of his Ass on chandler

Just exchanged tweets with Telep asking him to explain his reasoning behind him ranking Chandler so high last year and being down on him this year:

"@TheoRabinowitz Don't believe a guy who jumps around that much, hasn't been competitive in a while can impact. I'd like a do over."

Basically he regrets ranking him high last year. Thought he messed up that ranking I guess and wish he had ranked him lower.

With candler we could play a 3 guard offense

Didn't all the experts have him highly ranked?

Actually Telep had him ranked the highest at 43. The rest or the RSCI group had him between 55 and 76. But all had him ranked and he came in at 55 overall in the RSCI list.

I think people are overanalyzing Dave Telep's words in a big way. This is not a huge class in the traditional sense (meaning that they don't have five Top 100 players coming in like last year's group). We are bringing in prep players (Sampson and Wood), transfers (Branch and Hooper), JC (Sanchez and Bourgault), and one classic recruit (Balamou). But the coaching staff targeted needs and seemingly got some important pieces for next year's team. They got a point guard (Branch), shooters (Bourgault, Wood, and Hooper), and athletic big men (Sampson and Sanchez). Combine that with what we are expecting to be a superb sophomore season by Harrison and further progression by Garrett, Pointer, Greene, and God's Gift and we should have a pretty talented group on our hands next year.

And from what people in the know have said, Lavin is hopeful in landing a big time recruiting class in 2013. So really this is an exciting time to be a SJU fan. We are going to see one of our own get picked in the first round of the NBA Draft in June. We will most likely have another first round pick in 2013 or 2014 (Harrison). There is more interest in the program and we are getting involved in recruits that we haven't been involved in for a very long time. Things are looking up in Queens. B)

We take it personally because we are SJU fans. I think telep's comments are off about Chandler for sure. That said, recruiting services that rank recruiting classes need to start revamping their model. These classes are ranked based solely on which senior high schoolers a team lands. As the case with SJU as well as a lot of other schools, there are transfers, preps and JC players all which should be factored into a class. The impact of these types of players should be factored in.

Should we land Chandler, we will have added he and Branch, both of whom a service like Rivals had in the top 60 in the 2011 class. Jakarr a top 50. Sanchez a hon mention JC AA. Our recruiting class won't be ranked that highly by pundits, but it is a good class. We filled big needs, lose only one player from last season and even were able to grab some specialists like Bourgault and Hooper as shooters. Ultimately our class will be judged on the college hardwood courts. Personally, I love it when our guys surprise everybody. The recruiting class rank means litte. The real rank I find interesting is whe they place us in the preseason. I saw one that has us last in the big east for the 12/13 season. Those are the ones I love because it will be a big surprise to everybody once again when we are a top 25 team.

Dave telop is full of it. He had Sampson and Pointer ranked higher than Mo. So what he just took took a huge leap between June and October. I don't think so.

In fairness, he grew 2 inches during that span. Moe showed up on campus and shocked the hell out of some people, because of his growth spurt.

Moe at 6'6 is a good prospect, Moe at 6'8 or 6'9 is what gets NBA people talking.

I might try to look into that Moose. I tend to think there's more of a direct correlation, than most people acknowledge,
Not "class rankings", those are crap. how can you compare two McDonalds All Americans with 5 top 100 players ? You can't really.

But I suspect there's a pretty direct relationship between:
1) the number of rsci top 100 recruits on your roster, and
2) the avg rank of the guys on your team, when they left HS. So regardless of how they got to you- what were their rankings coming out of HS.

Can't deny that talent wins. It's not an absolute, there are exceptions. But give me talent over experience, intangibles, chemistry etc any day.

Ideally we should strive for a mix of both, and not live with either extreme.
