Why isn't St. John's class rated higher? I think Jakarr Sampson will easily replace Harkless. Also any chance of them adding another big like Michael Chandler or Jordan Dickerson

St. John's class is appropriately ranked IMO. Sampson is a good player but not sure he can carry the load the way Harkless did. Harkless had a bigger offensive game. Chandler and Dickerson aren't impact guys. In the case of Chandler, he's bounced around too much to be able to count on him until he proves himself as a player and shows some stability.

I agree with the Sampson part, but not so sure about Chandler. I think any time you can get close to 10 ppg out of a freshman center it has a huge impact on your team. I wouldn't be shocked to see 8 to 10 ppg out of him, along with 6 or 7 rpg. A lot depends on rust and the work he's willing to put in, though.

10 ppg and 6 RPGs???? Gift did better than that and will do better than that next season.

Funny that Telep said that considering HIS service ranked Chandler as the 44th best prospect in LAST years class. Unless maybe Telep has received info that Chandler has regressed a bit in the last year....

Also in terms of him ranking the class, keep in mind that he hasn't seen JUCO guys, so he doesn't know how good Orlando Sanchez is.

I could be wrong, but Sampson is a year older, played in an excellent program this year and is stronger then last year. Im expecting great things from him and feel that he will compare favorably to Moe.

The bigger.pt is his shot blocking and stopping the penetration and altering shots If we had that last yr we could have had a 15 win season and with the.new comers for 2012 .and chandler .if he gives us 10 pts pg 20 wins
is..probable.

Telep comparing Dickerson in the same sentence and saying they aren't impact guys is inaccurate. Chandler's committment is one thing to question, but he is certainly an impact big guy. He was a top center in the class and not comparable to Dickerson.

Who cares, games aren't won based on where a recruiting analyst ranked a class.

Totally agree. Still don't know how Chandler's "bouncing around" with his commitment to schools he didn't get into has anything to do with his game.

Sorry dave but if you add a Branch, Sanchez, Jakarr and Marco you can't tell me thats not a solid class to go along with the returning 2nd yr guys. Now add Chandler and i would say thats an impact class all the way around the court 1-5.

Exactly. Put Wood into the mix and it's really a no brainer.

It is nearly impossible to gauge because of movement and such but would be interesting to marry up recruiting rankings to winning %'s

combined if marco & wood average more than 15 minutes per game, I'd be shocked. Especially is SJU lands Chandler, like many on this board seem to think they will. Obviously, its different positions, but it would eat into overall available minutes.

Dave telop is full of it. He had Sampson and Pointer ranked higher than Mo. So what he just took took a huge leap between June and October. I don't think so.

as i mentioned before...new england went to the super bowl with 18 non draftees and a quarterback who was picked in the sixth round. it's how they're coached when they get here that counts.

this class will do fine.

 I have a problem with Telep's answers.
How is Chandler not an impact player? Is he a risk...clearly...but his low-post scoring is up there with just about anyone. If he ges his act together he is capalbe of being a first team all-conference player at any conference in the country. His risk value doesn't change whether or not he can make an impact if he ever gets on a court.

Also, Telep--in the context of STJ's class ranking--said that Sampson was only a "good" player and he couldn't carry the load like Moe. While that may be true, Telep with ESPN ranked Moe as the third best SF recruit for St. John's. He had POINTER at 25 and Sampson at 32. Sampson, according to Telep's own scouting report could play both forward spots, while Moe was only referred to as a SF. Well, Moe played mostly center and some PF for us-- positions even Telep would have conceded Sampson was better suited for than Moe. How is Sampson not projected to be better than Moe was projected last year with an extra year of conditioning, experience, and lifting?

A better answer would have been that STJ' class, while solid, is not really susceptible to a traditional ranking because of the two JUCOs, transfer, and fifth year players.

Newsie is right. Remember, we should have beaten Duke at Cameron last season with 5 of the 6 guys on that team returning. Now we add double the depth and a big group of talented layers at all positions. We'll be starting a top 60 kid or JC AA at every spot. I'm happy with the group we have coming in. Fantastic cre now and no more depth shortfalls where we don't have enough guys to play aggressive defenses nor fouls. I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised by everybody we brought in including guys like Bouurgault, Balamou and Wood. All are quite skilled and can play regardless of rankings. If we add Chandler, he's a lot better than Telep has a clue about.

I think two extremely athletic and talented forwards like Jakarr and Orlando will more than make up for Moe in the production department overall. If we add Chandler, we're way beyond where we were in the frontcourt with just Moe and Amir having just gotten rolling the second semester.

Thing is all of us are probably better "experts" about all things St J's than the so called experts because we follow it so closely and these guys are spreading their attention over hundreds of teams.
