Dalton was actually highly recruited in the Class of '80.  John Thompson convinced him to attend prep school, which he did, and he came in with Ewing, Billy Martin, and Anthony Jones (who later transferred to UNLV) for the #1 rated class of '81.

Dalton received an extra year (his last year was the '85-'86 season) as he had an injry during his freshman season.

I believe you're referring to Ronnie Highsmith, who was stationed at Ft. Lee, VA in the Army when Craig Esherick came to visit.

dont let a factually highly erroneous assertion change the point.   You can find guys who contribute anywhere.    If you did that all from memory that's pretty impressive.

Dalton has had a great career on Wall Street.  He had those special shoes what he played, correct?

Agreed that you can find anyone anywhere, but it was a lot different when Dalton played. In this day and age,  with so much info readily available to everyone, it's a lot harder for coaches to find hidden gems.

26 pages of nothing on a kid we know nothing about so I am just thankful for a 6'10 kid who committed to a better program before SJ and who brings much needed depth to the front court.

And you don't find it the least bit odd that there's little to no info on this kid? The fact that he committed to,  and then was let go from, TT, seems to be the one thing everyone is hanging their hats on. Don't you think we should first let the kid suit up for us, then see if he can play at this level, before we proclaim him to be someone who will add depth to our front court?  We don't need another "body".

I agree with that, but there are always kids that get overlooked where someone with a good eye for talent sees something.   JC was that for us at a different level for sure.

I had this conversation once with Cluess, and asked him how he "recruited" so many foreign players, but at St Marys and in college.   He is a guy I like a lot because he is (sometimes brutally) honest and direct.  He said, "I don't recruit them at all.   I get call from coaches all over the place asking me to think about taking a kid.."

A little bit off topic and your point, but maybe this guy can bring something to the table that we really need.  Maybe just 5 fouls, but maybe some interior muscle, or rebounding, etc.

But JC was a known entity coming out of Louglin, it's just that everyone underestimated his ability. He was a great pick up, no doubt, but sometimes it's better to be lucky (with recruiting) then good. Maybe this kid can give us some positive things, but I can't imagine it's going to be more than Toro/Roberts can give us, and those kids are already part of the team. Guess time will tell.

Yeah, I pretty much did it through memory.  My oldest brother and several friends were/are Hoya fans, and I recall hearing stories whilst watching games.

That's correct.....  Dalton did have to wear special shoes.

It was on topic.   It was referring to the fact that there are some guys you can find anywhere.   Dink, who is an enclycopedia of basketball correted the story to be Ronnie Highsmith     TV announcers always repeated the story of Highsmith working in a post office.

I remember that guy's senior year.  I was front row under the basket at the Garden, near the end of the season.   There was an SJU foul shot and Highsmith was lined up on the blocks closest to the baseline, closest to me.   I started obnxiously screaming at him "It's back to the post office for you!"  stupidly again and again.   All of a sudden he took his hands off off his knees and looked over to see which loudmouthed fan was screaming that.    I then correctly realized that he was about 10 feet away with nothing in between us, and could have killed me easier than a lion bringing down a gazelle.  If only I was that fast.

M - thanks on Cluess and yep time will tell
Nice to see a positive, hopeful post - the coach and staff are doing the best they can, are experienced recruiters, want to win AND ARE IN PROCESS of developing recruiting lines - we have seen here some posts "why are we not after this kid" along with "why are we wasting time with this kid"...hmmmn let's see who we should trust in re recruiting judgment???
The very best of holidays to every single one of we St. Johns' fans - even those I do not gree with :)
Your friend Ulysses

Oops not sure if I am off or on topic - my appologies if I screwed up Ohio Fan

I've been dying to talk about Darren Dalton from the Outsiders and Red Dawn, and now I'm finally able to.
