Creighton (MSG), Sun., Feb. 25, 12 Noon, CBS

Zach B and others believe if we can run the table (win the next 4) a Dance bid is possible. Creighton is playing very well of late, Johnnies not so much. I hate to get my hopes up only to be knocked down but alas, I will watch with hope and somehow believe the ghosts of MSG may come through in this one.
I feel like we are due for a breakout and some good luck. But I thought the same thing before we blew a 19 point lead

The only way to beat Creighton is to outscore them. We can't beat them with our defense, so the only option is not going on a scoring slump or a scoring drought.

Even though this feels like a matchup of two teams going in opposite directions, we did come within a hair of beating them @Creighton.

I watched them beat UConn the other night. It looked easy because the threes were falling. Threes were falling from guys who don't even usually make threes. If we can even out the 3pt battle in this one I think we can have a shot to win late.

But I wouldn't go into this one expecting much. Creighton is an experienced team with a core that has played a lot together. They are ramping up just in time for March. We will have our work cut out for us.
Key for Johnnies is not to get a big first half lead! Might be better if we trail at halftime to change the narrative

Historically SJ utilized constant, aggressive bully ball to throw Creighton rhythm off and
sometimes hold serve at home. Sorry. but “constant” is not an adjective you can truthfully apply to our D.

Secondly, defending Creighton’s lethal three point attack, especially in transition is a huge weakness of SJU.

Lastly, Creighton essentially goes w starters’ iron man approach playing huge minutes w two role guys off the bench. That can only be exploited obviously driving and getting prime guys in foul trouble.

Unfortunately, I see “White Out Day” morphing into SJ white flag in middle of second half w a double digit loss. Wishing otherwise of course.

Ashworth seems like a guy who's finally getting it going for them -- definitely was the difference maker against UCONN. He shot 43% from 3pt last year at Utah State.

In February, he's at 42% from 3pt. January and December were 32% and 24% respectively.

It would be crazy to expect a win. But winning Big East road games are tough. Hopefully our fans are energized by Rick's white suit. This would be a quintessential let down game after beating UCONN.

I've seen him twice since we played him and he looked much better than he did against us. This is a game I thought we had a good chance of winning when I looked at the schedule in October.

Hey, there's one thing going for us on Sunday, we aren't playing in Creighton where it seemed like on every possession they went to the line.
Hoping the refs call a better game.

First time we played Creighton shot 6-27 from three. I'll be rooting for our guys like crazy but frankly think our best (and probably only) chance of winning is for Creighton to have another very off day from three. You never know.

Agree. I guess a silver lining is that we were only 2-11 from three and didn't really have a good offensive game from anyone. But, as we watched the game, it's also fair to say that we gave up open looks that Creighton missed while our lack of offense was mainly due to their defense.

If Creighton shoots below thirty per cent from three SJU can win. If on the other hand they have a good shooting game they could score sixty in the second half.
Theyll have to be off target because SJU cannot defend them.

The thing about this mentality is it assumes the refs "calling a better game" is just on the refs. It is also on us to play good defense and stay in front of whoever we are guarding.

We've been victim to some ticky tack calls all year, but we also invite the calls by getting beat and getting out of position defensively. Thats when the desperation reach ins and hand checks start.

Even on an off day, a team as talented and well coached as Creighton will have a few good runs in them. Seems like whenever that happens, we quickly develop that deer-in-the-headlights look on D, and revert to hero ball on O. And before you can bat an eyelash, a decent lead turns in to a big deficit.

Short of us being a 20+ point dog on Sunday, I ain't betting on SJU, and that holds true for the rest of the season. That's how much faith I have in them at this point.
