Cragg on Ticket Prices

I few years ago I was told that St. John's pays $250K per game to lease the Garden and keeps the ticket revenue generated.

Can anyone confirm that figure ?

Glad to see Cragg is openly reflective and not the stubborn type.

At the end of the day this issue, like all others, is cured by winning.

Since renovations the number is higher
We keep paying the rent. As long as we do they will have us. 6 or 7 SJU games is easy money for them.
Yep. And, who are they getting to play at the garden at 630 on a Tuesday

I've said this before, but I really wouldn't mind making the Belmont arena our new full time home, when it opens. It's right on the Queens/LI border, so that satisfies probably 90% of the fanbase.

Maybe we could do something like Seton Hall does (though less so this year, obviously) at the Rock, where they close off the upper bowl. I always felt that was effective in bringing more of a homecourt advantage, to a pro style arena, and that's something we could use, because MSG is either empty, or 60% opposing fans, so we gain no advantage. It's why I don't like bringing recruits to games there. I always fear that they'll wind up loving the other team more, when they see that spirited crowd.

I also think we could get a more favorable schedule, playing there. We'd be second only to the Islanders WRT dates and times. At MSG, we're fourth at most, behind the Knicks, Rangers, and Billy Joel, and then there's all those other events the Garden has, like the Dog Show, the Rodeo, The Big 10 Challenge, Z100s Jingle Ball, etc. That's why we play so many noon weekend games there. There really aren't any other spots where they can take us. At Belmont, IMO, we'll get a fairer shake.
It isn’t going to be a substitute for MSG. We need MSG. It’s our home away from campus. That said, having a great new arena at Belmont is a fantastic new option that really opens up more for us because it is soooo close to campus. Maybe SJU wants to start a D1 ice hockey team? ;-)
It's not going to replace MSG, I know that, but maybe it should. If you want to maximize your win total, while keeping recruiting strong, it might be the way to go.

CA is worthless, we know that. Great atmosphere when rocking, but not a recruiting tool.

MSG is also not all it's cracked up to be, for us. What advantage do we have for that? All the other Big East schools can at least guarantee to a kid, that he'll play there in the Big East Tournament? Obviously, a few extra games per year does not make a big difference to these kids. Also, what are you going to sell the building on? The Knicks? There's a nice laugh. High School kids today only know the Knicks as losers.

Belmont arena will be state of the art (hopefully), with a smaller, more intimate atmosphere (if we take a page from Seton Hall's book), and with a more favorable schedule of dates. Hopefully, we can turn it into our version of the Dunkin Donuts Center, in Providence. That's what I'm looking for.
You guys are nuts with a capital N. We need msg. Every kid wants to play there. It is one of the few if only draw we have left.

Gulp.... I agree with Dee. It’s a huge recruiting tool for us. It will always be very important for our upward potential. Now fielding a good team is what we need to do.

It's not that great of a recruiting tool, since we haven't brought big time recruits in for quite awhile, now. Unfortunately, the best recruiting tools aren't legal, and it's not scaring off teams from using them.

But even beyond that, as I said before, any other Big East team can still use MSG WRT recruits, because they can guarantee the kids that they will play there in the Big East Tournament. Not to mention, that some of those kids might be more attracted to the atmosphere created there by the fans of the opposing school, so bringing them to games there might not always be in our best interests, either.

I’m not saying we shouldnt play at MSG but when playing Nova,SU or UCONN half the fans are from the opposing team, so we essentially play a neutral game and an away game against these teams. The solution is winning , but that is easier said then done.

Guys, we can't get rid of MSG. I know any other Big East coach can tell recruits they'll play there and lots of teams play in season tourneys there. But it's our tradition. I love the idea of playing some at Belmont especially if the train goes directly there. But we need to keep our MSG connection as strong as possible. Yes it's embarrassing we've been awful for so long...it makes us look like idiots playing in front of many open seats but that's because of how bad we've been...who would bother to come out? We've already gotten hints of what MSG could be like if we really start getting momentum and big wins. The Pitt game, basically any Duke game, Nova games, UConn games, and just imagine us starting off the year 9-0 and knocking off Kansas at MSG or something similar. Cragg wants to get more games like that at MSG for OOC. It looks silly now because we are really bad, but if we get any success, MSG will magnify it x10. We weren't even truly good last year and tons of fans came out. I know some were just for Mullin, but even the PC game got like 10-11k. I was at the Duke win and there was so much energy. I say bring on the opposing fans...it comes with the territory playing in a world class arena in midtown. It's not the opposing fans we need to worry about...it's our product on the court. Plus, CA is not getting knocked down and rebuilt anyway...there also isn't money for any real renovation. So this is our best bet.

It's funny you said that, as I truly felt positive about the person who was behind one or two of those tweets.

Nothing like the atmosphere at MSG (especially when we are decent) and easy to get to by public transportation whether from Jersey, NYC, Westchester, LI or even CT. If we really want to call ourselves NY's team have to play some games (could be one or two less if necessary from cost perspective) at MSG. Otherwise, we should just call ourselves Long Island's team...

It looks like management is saying you have to support MSG in order to get, or keep more games there. Or more games will be played at CA in which case guess who will make up the revenue. Remember these are the same nitwits who were chasing Porter Moser. Small time thinkers.
Small time thinkers.
These are the descendants of those who proclaimed Looie’s Recruiting Budget was a bag of subway tokens

I would play every Big East home game and every game against a power conference opponent at MSG, Carnesecca Arena is not the venue for those games.
I would play every Big East home game and every game against a power conference opponent at MSG, Carnesecca Arena is not the venue for those games.
Maybe we should play our home BE games at Belmont w the largest drawing games at MSG. Cant afford to play all our games at MSG if 10,000 seats is break even point.
As I don’t need to make a donation to keep my CA seats, less games at MSG will make it harder to justify paying the $500 contribution for two center court seats at MSG. May have to move to an end zone.
Come on over to 114 :)

Maybe a new Belmont Arena can be used for non-BE games instead of CA, but it would be a disaster to use it instead of MSG. A major step down. It's not just the arena, it's the middle of Manhattan location that is valuable. I'm all for using a different arena than CA, which is an embarrassing place for us to use as a home court. But we should never think about abandoning MSG.
