Connecticut (MSG), Sat., Feb. 3, 12 NOON, FOX

If we’re throwing out hypos here the plan was likely Posh and Clayton and that would have been sick.

Clayton could pick up for Posh’s lack of shooting and the steals and easy points would have flowed.

Jenkins can’t guard anyone at this level. Clayton is very good on defense.
As again , throwing the Butler player Posh into the mix at this time in the season , is ridiculous .!

RP’s plan was to have Jenkins and Clayton as his back court . Posh , if he stayed , would get minutes but , off the Bench . To think otherwise is unrealistic .
And , only in your mind .
Jenkins and Clayton were a top notch duo .

I don’t want to bash Posh but, more than a few posting here , think he was a shut down defender . He wasn’t that .
He was good at stealing the ball from behind or stripping the ball from bigs underneath .
He regularly got beat by faster and bigger BE guards off the dribble .

Jenkins has had to do everything on this team . He is the best player and it’s not close for number 2.

Willie may conduct himself well over here. But I highly doubt he would've signed up here if UConn had lost yesterday or if we had swept the Huskies.

Anyone who believes differently are fooling themselves.
Exactly, just like the Seton Hall fan who just happened to show up on this board right after our devastating Xavier loss.

When Rick took 13 players plus an additional player off scholarship I did wonder how he would find time for all of these kids, and how he would keep them happy, especially in the modern era where every kid feels they are entitled to minutes.

Now as the season has gone on, we've all witnessed the drastic changes to the rotation and minute distribution from game to game. I wonder if if this is having an impact on the attitude of these kids.
A classic chicken or the egg. One real negative for me, because I love the game, is that the idea of EARNING playing time will be “negotiated” out of the game. One of the things that kill me in baseball is reading that “X“ will be in left field, he is making too much money to not be in the lineup.
I have a sign in my office, actually a ton of them, but one of my favorites is ‘Work for it 10 times harder than you hope for it”. Not sure that working for everything you get is a pervading “philosophy” anymore, if you will. But maybe I have just reached a “get off my lawn” old age.

That's just trolling. Alleyne was gone somewhere and you talk as if he was going to stay. He was leaving with Hurley's regret but blessing, to further his post college earnings potential. Post college earnings potential, something you should think about before wasting your time annoying others.
Beast , great post putting the annoying comment on Alleyne to rest .

Everything you replied about Alleyne was true . Just a comment about his play yesterday .

Maybe I was alone in thinking that he wasn’t 100 percent Vs UCONN.

The camera focused on him leaving the court at half time and it looked to me as if he was not walking properly .
I noticed a limp of sorts as he went into the tunnel .

He didn’t have a great game but , playing hurt isn’t easy .

Thought the exact same thing

Ok - Willie was banned. Seems a decent fellow, but obviously not a #sjubb fan and thus, banned. Possibly he can find Alex whoeverhewas someplace and they can talk.

As for the loss - to me there are no new takeaways from it. We competed well for the most part, didn't execute in a key stretch mid-second-half, UConn did (why they are a top 5 team), lost as expected. I would have preferred a 5-7 point loss but it isn't as though we got blown out. Frankly I thought we did a good job taking their bigs out of the game, we just didn't take advantage of it when we did. The key is taking care of business the rest of the way now - team has to get their minds right and if they do they can finish strong and be an NCAAT team.

I have largely stayed out of the coaching discussion since it is probably well-known that I was one of the less enthusiastic (probably the least enthusiastic) posters in terms of the Pitino hiring. The concerns I had were

(1) age at a time when the trend in all major sports is to hire younger coaches who can connect with today's players;
(2) had not coached at the high D1 level for the better part of a decade
(3) huge systemic changes from the transfer portal and NIL

To me those issues raised a potential red flag about player acquisition and retention and whether the necessary adjustments could and would be made.

On the player acquisition front, I think the staff did a good job last year. They may have some regrets about the decisions they made, but they had a plan about who they wanted and they were mostly able to execute it. They also have excellent commits for next year, and I think they will again get what they want out of the portal. So at least for years 1 and 2, I have less concern about player acquisition. Year 3 and beyond is TBD, if they don't win or if there is an annual exodus then things may change on that front.

Player retention is an unknown at this point but obviously yesterday's comments were ... not encouraging. We used to have a total rebuild every 5th year; now it could be every year. Though that isn't unique to us, I suppose.

The adjustment factor is the one that concerns me the most. We have seen a whole lot of stubborn from the staff throughout the season. Some examples would be:

(1) not going to a zone when it was obvious the team can't stop the ball (see the Michigan, BC games and the press against X)
(2) refusing to take lumps to develop the freshmen
(3) a fair amount of "blame the players" comments in the press

It is entirely possible that Pitino's competitive drive will result in some self-evaluation and that the adjustments will come (next year, I don't expect to see that this year). But it is also possible that you can't teach an old dog new tricks and that the old tricks (which are great tricks) aren't teachable to today's puppies.

Not trying to make more of this than what it is - just flagging some things I have had in mind from early on and how they have / have not been allayed over the course of the season.

I think it’s safe to say WCJ was a huge loss, and we never recovered from that decision — which clearly shocked the coaching staff.

The post game comments from Pitino and building team culture is still bothering me. Is he implying that some of the underclassmen have a foot out the door? It’s also hypocritical because he used this very-new NCAA to jettison an entire roster to build a culture. Now’s he’s complaining about it?

I think out of Zuby/Wilcher/Taylor/Dunlap/Luis, it would be hard to recover from if more than one leave. I see them as the nucleus of the roster in future years. Ayo, Davis, and Traore are more culture setters.

Unless RJ has an epiphany in remaining games, I doubt imo that he will be on roster next season

Exactly. If you keep Wilcher, Taylor, Luis, Dunlap, Ejafor then you have 5 guys with upside who have a year in the system. Add 3 freshmen, fill the holes with a few transfers, and you have a representative roster for Year 2. Maybe you aren't able to keep all 5, but 3 or 4 would be important for continuity.

Then you roll into Year 3 with 6-7 players with experience and you should be ready to roll.

If you blow it all up every year, that isn't going to mesh with Pitino's system/expectations. Something has to give one way or the other.

He's the only one who doesn't get benched for stupid decisions - seems like Rick has decided to hitch his wagon to the talent level. But I'm sure he agrees the decisionmaking is woeful and must improve.

I agree. I don’t think CRP went into the season expecting that.

So with that said, losing any of those other guys (you almost have to assume an unexpected roster loss in this day and age), would trouble me

All of us should have learned something after the last few decades. The honeymoon stage most of us go through before the real season begins is a recipe for disappointment. I'm sure most fans saw very little of Dingle, Ledlum, Luis and Taylor, and nothing of Wilcher or Dunlap. Even the great coaches, or those who turned out great, had less than stellar first seasons. The Big East pre season polls had St. John's fifth. With a bunch of team stuck in the middle, and 4 games against the bottom of the conference left, that is certainly possible.

Problem is their play has been so uninspiring, that no win is a guarantee. Sure they hung tough against UConn, but when the going got tough, our guys didn't. Same story with the Xavier game. CRP still juggling lineups. The 3 point shooting is typical of SJU basketball. From memory, Dingle has to be near 0% from 3 the past 3 or 4 games. We all know, but sometimes forget over the summer, that the Big East is a monster conference, made harder as we don't have a true home court advantage many games. So sweep the bottom of the league and steal a few games, and we end up right where everyone but us expected.

I saw them as middle of pack, but even putting yesterday aside, I don’t see the improvement I expected at this stage. More games to be played, but I also see the “captain of the ship“ discouraged and a bit too blameful & public for my taste. Beating Marquette away, a tall task, would at least stop the bleeding and make team more confident perhaps. DePaul is so bad, any result won’t move needle for me, it is a given.

Excellent use of paragraphs ! Kranmars will send bouquets .

A lot of your comments are the reality of this season .
Pitino , except for his time here as Knocks Coach and , more recently at Iona is a unknown as it relates to Coaching style and use of Player Criticism .
Who amongst us , really know what the Press Conferences were at Kentucky and Louisville ?
It does seem his former players think very highly of him and I’m sure there were many times , Rick’s shoe was up Russ Smith’s Ass . How could it not be?

So , is it just his style to be blunt when speaking about his Players and Team ?
Next , while the Covid transfer portal had opened up a whole new dynamic in College BB , the NIL has taken it to a entirely different barrel of fish .

Pitino is 71 and grew up , like Knight , Coach K, Boeheim , Williams , Smith, Wright , etc in a era where you recruited players for mostly 4 years . That’s not the case today .

Will he adjust ? I think he will . He’s too proud of his legacy as a HOF Coach to give up after just a transition year .

He will try and keep the Players he brought In this year and add the pieces he needs .

A High Rated PG, a sharpshooter from the portal , a 7’ foot center , athletic enough to play in the BE, 2 long and quick forwards who can play Defense .

We have a lot of spots to offer players for next year . RP will find the players he wants .
