Let’s be real here, Joel Embiid is putting up 50 on Wilt’s head given the opportunity
Oh god, take shelter for that one, Jack! If Wilt played today I think he'd be a good player still but not as dominant, since he wouldn't be as much of a freak today compared to when he played.

There's the article about Ruth taking cognitive tests along with results. Interesting piece and the science on this stuff was still spotty, but it clearly sounds like he had superior ability to process objects and had great hand-eye coordination.

Redken, I think guys like Wilt would still be good today but I don't think it's a guarantee that most from that era who stood out would be better than the top guys today. Guys like LeBron, the Greek Freak, etc. they haven't seen many guys like that in their day if at all. The insane combination of shooting ability, athleticism, skill, speed, size, and strength. I think the shooters would still shoot well from back in the day, however they would have much less time and space to get their shots off with much bigger and quicker players. This is comparing stars in the NBA now to stars in the NBA then as is. Obviously like Maher said, if they had access to today's training and tech then they'd be beasts still. It's not as much a knock on previous decades of athletes as it is a consideration of how insanely athletic athletes have become in modern times.
Mike, you say that "guys like LeBron, the Greek Freak, etc. they haven't seen many guys like that in their day if at all. The insane combination of shooting ability, athleticism, skill, speed, size, and strength." But I say that the guys I mentioned fill that very description (OK with the exception of speed for Larry Bird) and today's players have "haven't seen many guys like that" today. Next you'll be telling us the Beatles were just an OK band. :)
Waiting for Jack to say that Sid Crosby is better than Gretzky was.
No I’d never say that. Sidney Crosby is the biggest bitch to ever step on the ice. Go rangers.

But as for basketball, older generations are always gonna think their players are better than the new generation. Never ending cycle. I have a lot of respect for the legends from the past, but I also don’t think Wilt ever had to deal with a physical specimen like embiid.

The League Had Real Centers
The Players Were More Mature Players
There Was Less Crying About Fouls
Bald Heads and Black Sneakers During the Playoffs
The League Allowed Hard Fouls, Instead of Calling Flagrants at Every Chance
The Level of Elite Talent in the NBA was Higher at that Point Than It Is Today
The Fan Experience Was Better
The Flop
The Lost Art of the Mid-Range Game
NBA on NBC > Any Network's NBA Coverage Today
The Rivalries Were More Intense
Fewer Tatoos = Fewer Bad Tattoos
Sports Were About Sports
There Were More Lunatics in the '90s
Coaches Were Legends, Today They're Suits
The Dunk Contest Was Much More Entertaining
The Playoffs Weren't as Drawn Out
Analysis Wasn't as Insufferable
Michael Jordan

The article will speak on each one. Back the i couldn't wait to put on a game, today NBA is last to me, rather watch college bball. Imagine MJ, Bird, Dom Wilkins, Magic, Karl Malone, The Dream Hakeem, Barkley, Ewing, and so many others played today where there's no def allowed? Are you f'ing kidding?
Today super stars join others to form super teams = Lebron joining Wade, Durant joining Curry.
Back then no f'ing way that happens, they truly hated each other.

So yeah, 125-122 are the norm today, I love offense but this is to much offense.

I admit there's way too much offense in today's NBA. Every game is an All-Star Game. I also can't stand how 90% of the NBA's talent are on about 5 teams. There's no parity. Superstars used to be much more spread out and it made things more fun. I still think there should be Type A and Type B rules of free agency. Make lists with LeBron, Curry, KD, etc. obviously on Type A list and only allow 2 Type A players on each team. This prevents the stupid Monstar teams from forming and winning every year and forces you to build via the draft and spread out the stars.

Creeping socialism!

Watching the game seriously since the Fall of '57, my all-time starting five is:

Michael Jordan
Oscar Robertson
LeBron James
Tim Duncan
Bill Russell

The key is that every one of these players would cut your heart out before letting their team lose.

Never would have suspected you were a Lebronsexual... (borrowed that from esteemed colleague) I do agree he's a unique player and probably the most gifted of all time, but I'm not sure that I buy that part about Lebron /team.

Where would you put: Dr. J? Wilt, Magic, Bird, Kareem, Maravich?

Greatest of all time or not, IMHO Dr. J was the most important player in NBA history and in a rarefied class with guys like M.Ali who were bigger than their sport. Jordan would sell out arenas but Dr. J. was the only guy who opposing fans routed for. That's how I remember it as a kid.

LeBron is probably my favorite player I've ever watched play. However, I don't think he'd cut anyones heart out before letting his team lose.

In his defense, he has been pitted against the Warriors the last two years who were just too overpowering.

However, LeBron completely gave up after they lost game 1 last year. I don't 100% blame him considering his scored 51. But, if he didn't wanna lose, he shouldn't have passed it to George Hill. Game tied, seconds remaining, he had STEPH CURRY guarding him who is like half his size. You are LeBron James, win the ball game for your team.

People don't realize Bron gave up after game 1, because he is so great he can put up stellar numbers without even really caring. But if you really study LeBron like I do, he gave up after game 1. Which is why he came up with that excuse that he hurt his hand by punching a white board after game 1. I don't believe that for a second.

Listen, there is like no way the Cavs could have won that series, but I wish Bron went down swinging a little bit. Lost some respect for him last summer.
Complaint: UCONN just landed 6'10 Akok Akok, ranked 31 nationally, for 2019. Where's our prize?
Sounds like you have a case of Akok envy

I hate when you are driving to the mechanic to get car inspected and you get a flat tire on a pothole ( even though it's a freaking run-flat ) and you cancelled your AAA last year and you forgot to put your insurance card in your glove compartment. Thank God Amex has roadside assistance

I'm pretty sure I lead redmen.com in flat tires with run flats the last 6 years or so

Interesting discussion about the great players now vs then. All have great points. I would add that I think part of the point missing is the evolution of players and how one lead from one to the other. Doctor J revolutionized the game. At the time he took basketball to new heights. Without him, not sure we have Magic and Bird. Then we get Jordan which seemed to take part Doc adding in Bird (shooting) and Magic (passing). No one in the 70's could seriously think of a guy like Magic who could play guard, forward, center. Amazing. Now you have LeBron and he has taken that and combined that with an even more amazing skill set.

I had a tire salesman in an Uber the other day. Short Answer, don't drive run flats unless you absolutely positively have to be able to keep driving. He said they're perfect for organ transplant transports and little else.
