College Hoops Today Big East Preview

One final comment on the plus side, last year the team played better on the road and with the infusion of more experience from the transfers, I think this group can build upon that. Obviously road performance is a big differentiating factor between conference top tier and below.

When you start with arguably one of the top 2 PG’s in the Big East and easily the best defensive PG in the Big East, and likely the favorite for Big East POY and likely the best forward, it’s a good start.  I’ve read some Funny predictions namely on the Yukon board rating us somewhere in the 9-10th place in the big East. While they think they’re second to nova.  It’s comical.  We shellacked them last season with the same team and Bouknight isn’t coming back.  Makes me laugh.

Last year was a unique circumstance, though.

We were better on the road because, with no fans, it was tough to build on the momentum of the home crowd, which this pressure style is made to do.  Heck, we even saw that be effective during Anderson's first year.

I hope we're not a bad road team (hopefully around .500), but this style, and the depth we now have, should lead to us being a dominant home team (though I still think there will be a transition period, at least early, this year).

Im expecting a couple really bad losses that we make up with road wins

Top 7 BE teams are loaded. Butler ended up being a good team last season. They bring everyone back. Xavier has 2 of the top 10 players in the league and more roster continuity than us. Providence has the best big man in the league and we would be raving about seton Halls talent if it were coming to us. That doesn’t include nova and uconn towards the top and creighton + Marquette the bottom. Each of those 7 schools could make a reasonable case as to why they should be picked to finish 2nd or 3rd IMO.

We have the best player in the league. Maybe the best PG in the league. We also only have 3 guys who have played competitive basketball together. How we could be so sure about anything I have no clue. I think we will be a solid tourney team. I think we could be a top 15 team if things break right. I also know there’s a world that exists where we go .500 in the BE and end up wrong side of the bubble.

Mase, while anything is possible, with this team and under these circumstances (2 of the top 10 players in the league including the best PG), a result where we would jot make the tourney would be a very disappointing season and IMO a severe underperformance.

I agree completely. Would be extremely disappointing. Don’t think the rest of the college bball world would be shocked however.

My point is there’s 30+ teams who are just as confident about their team. You say “2 of the top 10 players in the league including the best PG” and I agree. But Xavier fans think you’re talking about their team. And outside of those two guys our optimism is mostly based on what we hope this roster looks like when it comes together, not what they have been able to do in the BE.

I agree that the BE is loaded and with good parity.  As long as its teams do reasonably well in their OOC games against other major conference teams, I see no reason why the BE should not be viewed to be at least a 5 team bid league, with perhaps getting 7 teams in.

Feels great to look forward to a good season and not delude oneself.  I hope the current Covid situation doesn’t advance and throw a monkey wrench into the works.  We deserve a respite from these concerns.

When you have a POY candidate surrounded by other good pieces with depth and balance, it is usually leads to good things.

Gillespie is the best PG in the league until proven otherwise. Posh is upper-echelon as far as league PGs go, IMO. He is an elite defender obviously and impacts the game on that end in a way few guards do, and which often cannot be measured in traditional stats. How he makes the jump offensively will be interesting, because if he improves even marginally there it will take us up another level.

Pre Season speculation is always interesting .  Yes , the BE will be a strong Conference . Again .         As for our Team , the infusion of new Players is hard to gauge .  They have not played a CMA type game plan yet . Another variable , will be Team Chemistry , which should not be discounted .    We have our NY Area kids , Champ , Posh , Wusu , etc . All of whom will likely play a lot , 30 minutes for Julian and Posh . A little less for Wusu .  How Wheeler , Mathis , Coburn , Soriano , Smith etc fit in is still a unknown .  They all got big playing time elsewhere .  The Chemistry off the Court is just as important as on the Court .  It seemed Cole and Moore  might have had some difficulty with that last season .     So , it will be a work in progress to see how this new Roster will perform .
