College Hoops Today Big East Preview

Our best lineup will have Julian at PF. Not sure he wants to hear or see that, but it allows us to have Smith and Coburn on floor at same time if they both prove capable of scoring consistently at this level.

Is it possible?
could this finally be a season with realistic expectations ?
I hope so.  But one ear is poised waiting to hear that shoe drop.

Julian did not elect to come back to St John's to play the PF position. If Julian is going to have an NBA career, it is going to be as a wing, not a PF. It seems logical to me that CMA brought in some beef prior to this season for two reasons: (1) because we needed it and didn't have it against certain matchups last season and (2) to have Julian see that we would have enough bodies at the 4 and 5 spots that he would primarily be able to play on the wing next season if he were to return to St John's.

What I don't expect to see this year is Champ guarding the 5 defensively or playing much in the low post on offense. I expect to see him playing both the 3 and 4 on offense which in CMAs style are both kind of wing positions and will allow him the opportunity to improve his ability to put the ball on the floor and create his own shot. Imagine low post play being between Soriano, Nyiwe, Stanley and to some extent Wheeler.
As always with CMA how time is split will depend on how well new guys practice and perform in games. A given that Champs & Posh will play a lot and Wusu will get significant minutes. But lots of new guys to fit in and only one I have a hard time seeing getting a lot of minutes this year is Traore.

Probably wrong- but think i remember SJU being ranked 3rd preseason Shamorie's last year. Ponds/Heron/LJ/Simon/Clark.

Think you guys are sleeping on Wusu... my money is on him to start Game 1.... ill take say... +450 odds?

Yes, I know all this. That doesn't make my comment wrong, though.

Colin Gilliespe is not going to be the player of the year especially coming off knee surgery.  Posh will eclipse him as the best pg in the conference by January.

He’s the leader in the clubhouse. If we don’t finish above them in the standings Julian will have to greatly out perform him IMO.

Tough to say the board is sleeping on Wusu.  Many posters are very high on him.

Obviously having a lot of pieces on paper to be top three BE team is one thing, while integrating new players and getting it done on the court is another. Like our depth, talent and chances, but nothing is a lock in the very tough Big East.

UConn is deep, but without Bouknight, they are not going to be quite the same team.  They’re lucky to get Whaley back though and their strength is in the post.  Their backcourt will get eaten alive by us like last year and we are better this year than last year.  They have very, very few shooters and Hurley is more half-court than he is a transition guy. Who will hit outside shots outside of Cole and Polley? Their guards are weak.  SJU, Seton Hall and Xavier should be ahead of them imo.

People are sleeping on Mathis.  He’s actually a very talented player.  Numbers don’t tell his whole story.  He will thrive in our style and maybe become what we hoped Heron would.

This is a first for us as we have never had depth and real talent at all these positions.  Obviously a lot remains to be seen, but I don’t think we’ve ever been this deep without major deficiencies of size, shooting or the like.

I expect starting lineup to be:

Posh
Wusu
Mathis
Champagnie
Wheeler

We will start small with Wheeler there, but he’s our stretch 4 and a good one I think.  He’s absolutely not a center, but I think the staff will like his experience to start the season in our running style against easily opponents until our bigs get running. He won’t be there longer than a few early games.  It will give us time to integrate the other 3/4 guys like Soriano, Stanley, Nywie etc.

I feel more confident in our depth and talent level than I have in a long, long time.  Never seen us without a major deficiency.  Iron Mike will have these guys on the same page and we won’t be as easily exploitable this year by other teams as we have in the past.

In my opinion the player fans are sleeping on is not Wusu or Mathis.  Rather, it is Steph Smith.

Maybe all of the above honestly.  We also have Coburn.  3-4 very good SG-types who bring a varying skill-set.  I don’t think many other teams have this type of talent overall.

This could be the most talented overall squad since 1980's. They have to play the games though.

One final comment on the plus side, last year the team played better on the road and with the infusion of more experience from the transfers, I think this group can build upon that. Obviously road performance is a big differentiating factor between conference top tier and below.

A friend of this site saw the team for the first time with this group recently and I could only talk quick but his literally exact words and Mods forgive me for curse but I'm quoting, He said " Althletic as Fuck ". I'll leave you with that because this comes from one of the most hoop savvy people in the local area
