Coburn

I remember watching some of the games early in the season thinking Coburn was going to be a 6th man or a third scoring option for this team. Someone with decent length and can knock down the 3 ball with consistency. However, he has gotten zero playing time. Does anyone know why?

He was pretty bad when he played.  But I agree.  Got to give him some minute and see if he can improve.  Mathis provides zero shooting and you cant play posh, mathis and wusu at the same time anymore.  The def does not have to respect any of these guys shooting.  Its killing us.

Why is Stef Smith in the dog house?

Ive seen coarch bark hard at him during games multiple times.  Im going to say its because he isnt great on defense.  Coach would rather play mathis who provides 0 offense then a guy like smith who can shoot but lacks on the def end.

Good question

NY Post had an article today on the under performance of the transfers. Point was made that the fast pace St, John's plays is not a fit for Coburn. Max Hooper 2.0

What defense is Mathis playing? We're still giving up 85+ a game. I'll take Smith and take my chances with his defense.

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHAHA.  Agreed.  Ive had enough of Mathis.  He has 0 confidence in his shot.  Not a good attribute for a guard.

Routinely gets lost on defense. Unfortunately, he is one of the few potential outside threats so we need him

The whole team is routinely lost on defense

Zach B's article in tonight's Post speaks alot to this."St. John’s transfers struggling to keep up with preseason expectations"

And that's my main problem with Anderson.  He doesn't seem to care about the offensive side of the ball.  He also seems love guys who practice hard, which I'm sure Wusu and Mathis do.

That's great, but that should also only get you so far.  Wusu especially reminds me of Andre Stanley, if you remember him, in the fact that the coaching staff probably fell a bit too in love with guy's practice habits, and wanted to send a message to guys on the team, who maybe didn't work as hard.  The problem is, either the message was not received, or it was overemphasized, because Stanley played too much, and it felt like we were going 4 on 5 offensively.  Same with Wusu, IMO.

Wusu's skill set and intangibles far out way any negatives IMHO.  And btw, he's shooting 39% from 3 this year.  So if the shot is there I don't mind him taking it.  But I don't want him to get too happy with it.   The love for Coburn reminds me of loving your backup QB.

Coburn is a terrific kid.  BUT (1) unlike many/most other players, basketball is a secondary activity for him; (2) he cannot compete defensively at this level, and certainly not for a coach who insists that you play defense if you're going to play; and (3) there is little evidence that he can create his own shot which is also largely necessary in Anderson's system.

I understand he hit a few 3s in the preseason and folks fell in love with him, but he is not the cavalry coming over the hill to save the season.  The "backup QB" analogy is spot on.

As for the rest of the transfers, Wheeler is becoming a fine contributor and giving us about what I expected from him, 8-10 ppg and around 5 rpg in conference play (take that, Monte).  Stef Smith has not yet figured out the defensive responsibilities which is unfortunate because we could use his offense.  Mathis is a good defender, but he is Dunn 2.0 on offense - his one move is to put his head down and go to the rim (take that, too, Monte).

Seems to me that despite the total disruption of the schedule the team hung tough with two top-25 caliber teams on the road in the their first 3 conference games - hopefully the transfers will continue to settle in and better games are ahead.  Unfortunately that may not be until we get past the upcoming brutal stretch of Creighton-Hall-Hall-Nova.  We may well find ourselves in a big hole and have to come storming back after that.

Coburn’s strength is spot up jump shooter. Unfortunately not a strength for CMA’s offensive gameplan considering the lack of sets that we run. For 2.5 years we’ve seen our offense rely on scoring off turnovers and 1 on 1 isolations. Not a good recipe for national success unless you’ve got 5 star players.

I am not ashamed to admit that Wheeler has very pleasantly surprised me the last 2 games, and against tough comp. I'm hoping that his strong play continues and that he becomes our 3rd consistent offensive weapon, but let's talk again at the end of the season. Now, what's up with Nyiwe? /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

We will sell no wine before its time.  He clearly isn't ready yet, and on that on you may be correct that he will never be. But I am not ready to close the book on him just yet.
