Coburn is a terrific kid. BUT (1) unlike many/most other players, basketball is a secondary activity for him; (2) he cannot compete defensively at this level, and certainly not for a coach who insists that you play defense if you're going to play; and (3) there is little evidence that he can create his own shot which is also largely necessary in Anderson's system.
I understand he hit a few 3s in the preseason and folks fell in love with him, but he is not the cavalry coming over the hill to save the season. The "backup QB" analogy is spot on.
As for the rest of the transfers, Wheeler is becoming a fine contributor and giving us about what I expected from him, 8-10 ppg and around 5 rpg in conference play (take that, Monte). Stef Smith has not yet figured out the defensive responsibilities which is unfortunate because we could use his offense. Mathis is a good defender, but he is Dunn 2.0 on offense - his one move is to put his head down and go to the rim (take that, too, Monte).
Seems to me that despite the total disruption of the schedule the team hung tough with two top-25 caliber teams on the road in the their first 3 conference games - hopefully the transfers will continue to settle in and better games are ahead. Unfortunately that may not be until we get past the upcoming brutal stretch of Creighton-Hall-Hall-Nova. We may well find ourselves in a big hole and have to come storming back after that.
