Coaching Carousel

Or Steve Lavin

After the previous rejections, Cragg — who was hired in September out of Duke’s athletic department — indicated former Blue Devils assistant coach and current Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel texted earlier this week to lobby for Anderson.

“I said tell me more, and he told me about coach Anderson and Jeff is one of my closest friends. … And that was the starting point,” Cragg said. “He said if you could get him, that would be amazing.”

“But you have to take TJ Cleveland too” 🫣

He seems to do 5 or 6 years at each stop. (Ignoring his first job at New Orleans)
Yeah if I remember correctly the first move was odd, Marquette to Va Tech. But he said it was all about football vs non football. He did not think the new iteration of the BE would last very long.

Leaving Va Tech for TAM was more understandable. First off he did a really good job at a difficult place to coach. 4 straight 20 win seasons and 3 straight NCAAs in 5 years is really good. But he is from Texas and TAM resources are just better.

Again did a good job at TAM. My guess is the SEC is ridiculous. May see a more reasonable path to a NCAA Title thru College Park. And despite Willard's rantings Maryland can pay market value for a good coach and will ultimately put the resources needed to be a top 20 program.

BTW Willard almost followed him at Va Tech in 2019. He was their first choice in 2019 and was very close to accepting and leaving SHU.

Cragg had absolutely no clue.
The fact that he had to listen to and rely on Capel is truly sad.

Does that mean maybe we are buyers on Sellers?
Not that I disagree with you, and sorry to get off topic. But remember that coaching search? It was a total clown show all around.
Exactly my point, and I ask whose fault was it that it was a total clown show ?
Maryland loses and their coach is hired thé next day by Villanova.
Maryland who was somewhat surprised they lost their coach after agreeing to all of his public demands, turns around and immediately hires Buzz Williams whom everyone would agree is a very good coach and out of the SEC.
Indiana does not make the tournament and they immediately hire Devries from West Virginia, who also happens to be a very good coach.
Preparation, preparation, preparation.
The fact that he knew nothing about Mike Anderson, who had been a head coach at 2 SEC schools for a total of 10 years or more, and prior to that thé head coach at UAB, is frightening.
